UT Dallas Class of 2024- Admissions / Preparation Discussion

Turns out my son said he must have selected that the scores be sent to the schools he thought he would apply to at the time he registered for the tests.

My son is interested in the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program, and anybody has some insight for it? Thanks! He is a NMSF now with very good SAT score and GPA, in state, too.

My daughter did not apply for the program but wished she had. She is in her fourth year on the NM scholarship and does know many of the McDermott scholars. She has socialized with them quite a bit and has gone to many of their functions. What would you like to know?

@RayTX my ds was a NMF applied to McDermott and made it to finalist weekend.

Things to know:

  • stats will get you in the door but to make the cut off they are looking for much more like how a candidate made a lasting impact on their community, we are talking things like starting organizations not Eagle or Gold award scouting projects …
  • do the video and be original. they are looking for interesting creative people
  • know what you are signing up for, yes the program has several incredible perks but it’s HUGE commitment and the program has total control of their students.

@3scoutsmom, Thanks a lot for the info, and I will talk with my son over the weekend, and let him to decide. It is wonderful and must be fully devoted to all the activities, and he needs to be prepared.

Chance me for AES -
SAT (superscore) - 1470 (E 710; M 760)
Weighted GPA - 4.13 (school does not publish unweighted)
AP Subjects - Calculus BC (4); Computer Science A (3)
In state - Top 20% at a competitive HS
100 + voluntary hours of service
NHS

Does UTD use SAT superscore for AES?

@KC5402 Yes! UTD does superscore SAT for AES.

I would like to know this as well. I wonder if they use this to decide how much aes they would offer.

I do not think they look at acceptances when determining AES amounts. I would think most students would not accept their admittance this early in the process. Most of the students are still waiting for acceptances from other schools, the big one being UT which many will not know until February. The one thing you should do for UTD if you are truly interested in going there, is to put down the deposit for housing when it opens. That does not mean you have accepted admittance but it does give you priority if you decide to go there. You should do the same thing for UT if you are interested in going there.

It’s a non binding decision. So I don’t think they’ll hold students for anything if they accepted the offer. I understand about putting the deposit to hold the spot for housing. IMO though the schools should refund the deposit if the student does not get accepted.

@icedmachiato, I could be wrong but I think UTD only allows you to place a deposit after admission but it can be before acceptance. UT does allow deposits before admission and does not refund.

Hello guys, I checked the Galaxy portal today, and found this: Supplemental Document Submission for Letter of Recommendation, Essay and Resume. Are these required for helpful? UTD said application has been received. Thanks!

@RayTX They’re optional supplements to the application:
From UTD admissions website:
Optional Steps
Submit essay Topic A, B, or C on the ApplyTexas application.
Submit supplementary resume, letters of recommendation, and/or essay by postal mail or log in to your Galaxy account and upload them to the Supplemental Admission Docs folder in the Admissions Forms Folder. The application cover letter must accompany all supplementary documents submitted by mail.

If UTD is a top choice, I’d recommend adding some or all of them to their application.

@vvsitalia, Thank you so much, I will ask my son to upload more. UTD is really good with scholarships, far better than UT Austin and Texas A&M, for our situation.

Hi,
I checked the galaxy and found that my son got admitted to UT Dallas. He applied for Finance Major. His stats are 4.82 Weighted GPA, 29 in ACT, plenty of AP courses, Varsity Soccer, Club soccer, VP in BPA, DECA and NHSS, work experience in Whataburger and Americorps, 150+ volunteer hrs.

The portal is suggesting to accept the offer. Is it a binding offer?

Regards,

I don’t think it is binding but I still would not accept until you have made your final decision. If UTD is a contender, I would put down the deposit for housing. That does not mean you have accepted admittance but gets you priority for housing if you choose to go there.

Thank you

DS17 has been accepted today to UTD CS today, and the transcript was just received yesterday. Now looking for honors, as it may be a full ride with NMF. TAMU also admitted but NMF only covers tuition. Waiting for UT Austin, but may not get much scholarships, and admit should not be a problem. It is money issue now.

@RayTX if you are NMF you are auto admit to UTD’s honors. UT Austin is not know for merit money.
