@CrackintoPieces three was a change to the section process starting for the class of 2022. In the past they identified x number of scholars and a list of alternates. If/when soeone declined the scholarship an alternate would be asked. They no longer use an alternate list so they now have smaller class sizes.
Yes, competition is insane, during finalist weekend I met several outstanding candidates, one I recall was accepted to two military service academies. These students often must choose between McDermot at UTD and some of the most prestigious colleges in the country.
My son was accepted in UTD CS program last week. I was surprised how quickly they responded. He applied 11/13 and received acceptance 12/3. (and this of course accounts for Thanksgiving holiday). In fact his transcript did not arrive until 11/29 due to a mix up.
Now we are awaiting AES. His acceptance letter mentioned AES awards will be announced 12/15 (which is a Sunday?). His stats are good: 1520 SAT, 10 AP classes, Ap scholar with distinction, so we are really hoping he gets decent merit aid.
For a totally different type of school, he also received generous Merit at Austin College (in Sherman) which is a small fantastic LAC so if he stays in Texas this could be an interesting decision.
This morning I saw a reward letter from UTD in Galaxy, saying $8000 per semester, but it was gone by this afternoon, and I guess they may put a wrong letter into DD account, later rescinded. Sorry I can’t remember if it is for Terry or AES, but DD is a NMSF.
@RayTX I think everyones was in there and disappeared so maybe they got put in there before they were supposed to announce them. My D20s also was gone by afternoon.
Got an email this morning at about 2am saying the aes scholarships had been put into galaxy.
I received $13k a year/ $6,500 a semester.
Stats- top 4% out of about 750 in my class, 33 act, all A’s except for one high B on my transcript, 11 current and past AP credits, 4.12 weighted GPA, 3.8 unweighted, okay ECs & leadership.
Can everyone else who recieved one let us know how much you got and your stats? I was hoping for full tuition and I’m not sure if I should ask for them to reconsider.
@kirkhaven What’s the room and board plan?
Edit: Ignore that, I missread the way that it was worded and thought you meant that UTD will be giving him $25K more for room and board
I personally think the cost of attendance is overestimated. We are not paying $31. We pay a little over $13,000 a semester directly to the school. But have not had to pay hardly anything for books/software. Take a look at the breakdown for yourselves.
Academic Excellence Scholar $16,000.00
Federal Pell Grant 1,945.00
Direct Sub. Stafford Loan 3,500.00
Federal Work Study 5,000.00
Direct Unsub Stafford Loan 2,000.00
Totals 28,445.00
SAT – 1600
GPA – 4.0/.49
A mouthful of AP classes.
16K here too, but I would love to see the instate tuition listed as part of the award. DS20 is NMSF and will hopefully become NMF.
This new system must have come as an unpleasant surprise to many of the applicants. It makes me wonder how many high stats students will opt to go somewhere else. UTD will most likely see a dip in their SAT range thanks to this change.
For in-state residents, the estimated COA, including tuition, room, board, etc is $26,008.00. So if an oos or an in-state applicant receives a $3K scholarship, the estimated COA would be $23,008.00; if the scholarship is $13K, the estimated COA for both oos and in-state residents is $13,008.00, and so forth.
Actually a good deal for students from states with public universities charging closer to $20K (or more depending on major) in tuition alone.
