UVA Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

William & Mary
Applied to Arts & Sciences (Economics or Physics)
First year of college, In-State Student
Last semester I had a 3.3 (with a tough physics class and W&M grade deflation)
HS GPA was about a 3.85, my school doesn’t rank but this was probably in the top quarter
SAT: 770 CR, 710 Math, 610 Writing/ 2090 Composite
SAT IIs: 740 Lit, 690 USH
ECs: Captain of Varsity Tennis Team, Founder and Chancellor of German Club, German Exchange, work experience at two law firms and Economics Club membership for 4 years

The main thing that worries me about my app is my first semester GPA. 3.3 is a little low, right? Will it help that I’m coming from W&M, that I’m in-state or that it’s still too early in my college career to really accurately gauge what my GPA will be?

Applying to UVA from a lower-ranked state school. Chance me?

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College

Applying as Sophomore Transfer to CAS w/ majors in biochemistry and neuroscience

College GPA: 4.00
Semester 1 courses (21 credits): General Biology I, Calc II, Organic Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry I w/ lab, History of Jazz, History of Russia, a student development class that doesn’t matter

Semester 2 courses (20 credits): General Biology II, Calc III, Organic Chemistry II (lecture only, advisor did not recommend lab at a community college), Principles of Psychology, Ethics, an online literature class

Mid term grades for second semester should be all A’s. I’m not really sure how I’ll get one from my online English prof though…I may ask admissions if I can just omit it since these are optional to send in anyways.

Between these two semesters and AP credits, I should be able to get my associated degree this Spring.

College ECs:
-one of 13 or so selected for a school sponsored leadership program
-Phi Theta Kappa (honor society)
-volunteer tutor for the school
-freelance tutor for organic chemistry
-taekwondo instructor; I also spar competitively in tournaments (State Champion this year)
-neuroscience research assistant at MCV, 15 people emailed that PI asking for a position, which was open to actual VCU undergrads and MCV medical students. I was the only one who got it.

  • scored 4th highest in college on AMATYC exam (a math competition for two-year colleges)

SAT: 800 reading, 750 math, 770 writing (2320 composite)

AP scores:

  • US History: 4 (won’t count at UVA)
  • Chemistry: 4
  • English Lang: 5
  • AP Calc AB: 5
  • US Government: 5

HS GPA: 3.8 (w) - switched secondary schools, graduated early
Funny story about high school…I used to go to a top 20 magnet school and did well there my freshman year, nearly straight A+'s. However sophomore year I had some health issues. Needless to say, I missed a lot of school, and my grades tanked significantly. Halfway through junior year, my doctor decided to switch my medication, and my family decided it would be best for me to transfer to my regular public high school in order to decrease my stress levels and help me better adjust to medication. The meds worked, and I finished off junior year with nearly all A’s and only one B. Since I had taken so many courses at my old magnet school, I just had to take one class over the summer in order to graduate early, so here I am today.

High School ECs:
-AP scholar w/ distinction
-Director of External Communications for the Model Congress conference my school hosts
-some volunteer hours
-Newspaper Layout Editor
-Club Asia
-meritorious distinction in math modeling contest

Recommendations: Two solid recs from college profs whose classes I stood out in, one from my HS counselor explaining what happened and how I recovered

Essays: eh, not my best. They were kind of rushed.

I know this is a super long post. Chance me?

I’m glad I found this. I’m a first year in-state student trying to transfer into the e-school.

SAT: 1910
HS GPA: 4.1
College GPA: 4.0

I’ll have 66 credits after this semester (which is part of the reason that I am applying for transfer now rather than sophomore year).

I’ve been accepted to VT for transfer, but I would choose UVa in a heartbeat. Everyone I talk to urges me to reconsider, but the specificity of the curriculum I am seeking, the classes outside of the e-school, and the pathways for involvement with the CVille community are all very important pull factors for me, personally. UVa is my dream school.

Anyhoo, fingers crossed for everyone until May!

ann29869, considering that you are also in-state, I would be shocked if you were not offered admission. Don’t worry about the essays; you sound like an awesome applicant, and your accomplishments speak volumes. Good luck!

Did u guys receive sis?

@azianboy123‌ Yes I got it a while back. Contact admissions if you haven’t received it.

Hey everyone, since it seems like everyone is trying to see their chances of getting accepted, I may be able to help - I was accepted as a third year transfer this past Fall (2014), so I can give my stats for you to compare against.

College:
Came from a small in-state college
GPA: 3.8 (after 4 semesters)
Decent amount of extracurriculars including volunteering and intramural sports, however no leadership positions
One recommendation
I’m assuming my essays were pretty good, because in all honesty I don’t think my stats alone would have gotten me in

HS:
GPA: 3.6
SAT: 1800
ACT: 24
Almost no extracurriculars

I should also mention that I was accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences - McIntire is a completely different ball game.
Also last year, the decisions were released on April 30th, one day before the scheduled release - so don’t expect to receive your decision any time soon, expect beginning of May.

One last tip: the longer you’ve been in college, the better your GPA looks (provided it’s good.) A 3.8 after 4 semesters looks much better than a 4.0 after one, since first semester/year is generally easier than second year.

@ag1994 , how would a 4.0 with triple science (bio 1 with lab, physics 1 with lab, chem 2) and an honors humanities course look? Is that comparable to second-year level rigor?

My son is interested in transferring, he is out of state, at a good college with a 3.5 gpa. Is it true that it’s hard to transfer as an OOS? I heard they mostly take in state transfers.

Anybody here applying to McIntire?

Is the waiting killing anyone else? All these high school seniors are posting their acceptance letters and giving me heart palpitations!

It all depends on how competitive is his major. GPA 3.5 should get him in a lot of majors but not McIntire and Architecture program.

The wait always kills …

UVA has just done with RD. You guys are next! Give another 3 weeks waiting time before news break. Good luck folks!

@quanfo‌ how do you know the decisions will come out in just 3 weeks instead of closer to May 1?

I don’t. Just a wild guess, in 3 weeks at the earliest …

I’m applying to architecture. Ouch! Why didn’t I chose a less competitive major?

Hey everyone,

I have a spot for a male for the 2015-2016 academic year in Bice (On-Grounds housing). I transferred to UVA last year and Bice has been a really great spot to start at UVA. When I applied for on grounds housing I was put into one of the older and far away dorms but I found a post similar to this last year so I was able to take over that persons lease through the university and live in Bice this year. Bice is located right next to the Lawn and only a five minute walk to the corner. If you have any questions please message me.

Also I transferred into McIntire School of Commerce so if anyone has any specific questions about that feel free to message me.
