UVA Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

Hey all, I know it’s a little early but why don’t we get started on the fall thread and see where each others are at?

I am an in-state student with 3.98 gpa w/ 65 credits, and I have extracurricular activities centered around tutoring and volunteering at a soup kitchen. I’m applying to Arts and Sciences.

Share your stats and which school you are applying to!

Also- does anyone know about Common App’s customized essays?

4.0 gpa (I’m a first year)
30 ACT
57 credits completed, 71 by the end of the year
Arts and Sciences
Coming from OSU

Your ACT score is solid!! Are you transferring in as a sophomore or junior?

I think I put sophomore lol (I’m only a freshman even though I have that many credits)

Someone chance me?

My Stats:
Current college: California Polytechnic (Cal Poly)
College/ Major Applying to: Economics
Entering as: Sophomore
HS GPA UW: 3.74
HS GPA Weighted: 4.0
College GPA: 3.7
SAT: 2230

Quarter 1 Courses:
Public Speaking
Statistics
Customs and Culture:

Current Courses:
Calc 1
Psychology
Survey of Economics
English: Argumentative Writing

Extracurriculars: Horse Polo, Dorm President, Official Photographer for Cal Poly Surf Team, Taught orphans in Costa Rica lacrosse, Went to Guatemala for a reforestation project, Started a non-profit in HS, Tech internships during high school.

Essay: I realized that my current business major was to specific. Cal Poly is very specialized and does not have a good program for the arts. Applying to transfer so I can study film as well as economics.

Recommendations: Both from professors that I have a good relationships with. I go over to one of my professors house sometimes over the weekend for her to read my essays.

Can someone chance me as well?

High school GPA weighted: 3.49
First Semester College GPA: 4.0
ACT Score: 21
Applying to the School of Arts and Sciences as a Foreign Affairs and Psych major.
Am currently attending NVCC

I have two real strong recommendations as well.

I did a ton of extracurricular activities both in college and in high school. I was president of the latin honor society in high school, I’ve been a peer mentor for three years, I’ve done two different internships with two different lawyers, I’m a member of the AAUW, I take part in the SGA in my college. I’ve also taken four years of Persian previously, and I was able to slip into one of my essays. I have also volunteered for the Commonwealth of Virginia with election stuff and I also am a campaign intern at the moment.

I focused on mental illness and relations between the US and Iran in my essays.

Good luck to everyone!

don’t wanna be chanced, just makes me more anxious  but it’s good to hear from everyone so far! Good luck everyone!

The waiting is killing me! I turned in my application and I just want to know if I have a good chance

Treeel, I think you have a very high chance except for the fact that you come from an out of state school. Good luck!!

Canucksfangirl, I think it is hard to chance your case because you’ve only taken one semester of college work. It’s more likely for you than for those transferring in as juniors that the admissions will look at your high school grade and your standardized test score, which are far from UVA’s average. Anyhow, your extracurricular activities look stellar and I hope you have the best of luck!

Chance me if you get a chance/so desire, but I post this mainly for others’ reference

My Stats:
IS/OOS: IS
Current college: Roanoke College
College/ Major Applying to: College of Arts & Sciences, Economics
Entering as: Sophomore
HS GPA Weighted: 2.8 (very bad circumstances led to this GPA early freshman/sophomore year; senior year I took 6 AP’s and a couple honors courses and got a 4.52)
College GPA: 3.25 after 1 Semester (bear in mind Roanoke participates in severe grade deflation and sits at 9th hardest grading college in the nation)
ACT: 28 ( 29 English, 19 Math (don’t ask, I’d get a 30 if I took this again), 32 Reading, 32 Science)

Semester 1 Courses:
110 Freshman Seminar- B (Professor doesn’t believe in anything above an A-, my B was the highest grade)
211 Global Business/Management- A-
240 Statistics- B+
101 Italian- B

Current Courses w/ midterm grades (ours are very early):
215 Accounting- A-
122 Macroeconomics- B+
102 Italian- A-
112 Freshman Seminar- A-
112 Calculus- B+

AP Credit: I got a bunch of elective credit for 4’s that won’t help me at UVa and got credit for Microeconomics and a couple others not worth mentioning.

All of these courses are considered 4 credit hours rather than the standard 3 which may or may not matter

Extracurricular:
Model UN- Generic Conference and on campus stuff
VP Economics Club- Went on a 3 day trip to CNU for a public choice seminar with 15 other students selected from three colleges (I was the only freshman among 14 Seniors, half of whom are research fellows)
Pi Lambda Phi- Fraternity that is fairly large at UVa
Club Soccer- Opted to play club rather than varsity
CEO/Entrepreneur Club
London School of Economics Summer Program: competitive program w/ ~B+ minimum GPA to apply
Volunteer/Class Service at the Salem Food Pantry: Published a short article in their newsletter that is sent out to the whole Roanoke area
SGA- Academic Senator
Student Tutor for Statistics 240
Sports Statistics Research Group under a professor that is now making a full course on Sports Statistics/Analysis
Alpha Phi Omega- Service Co-Ed fraternity
Alpha Kappa Psi- Business Co-Ed fraternity

I’m involved with others, but I focus on the above mainly.

Essay: Economics program at Roanoke is lacking in course selection and overall size. Applying to transfer so I can study a wider variety of Economics courses and pick up a concentration in Public Policy; a few other aspects were mentioned.
Concern Essay: Financial literacy in the U.S.
Career Essay: All about Economics/Policy stuff
All were pretty solid

Recommendations: Excellent rec from my adviser. Great one from my RA

@lavolpe Are any of those classes at Roanoke INQ?

The 240 Statistics and the freshman seminar are the only INQ’s up there.
I am under the impression that UVa’s requirement of “completing your colleges English course sequence” would apply to the freshman seminar courses.
If Statistics doesn’t transfer then so be it; I have no reservations talking it again.

How are you familiar with Roanoke INQ system, if you don’t mind my asking.

@LaVolpe My daughter is a freshman there right now and is in Stats (the title is something else of course). I know that some of those classes can pose transfer problems. She also got a 3.25 last fall, and like you said their grading is tough. Good luck in your quest to get into UVA!

@scsiguru‌ They are definitely a barrier if you don’t plan around them.
Personally, I’ve selected courses that I know will transfer directly into UVa or don’t mind taking again (statistics would just be a free A if I had to take it again).
If your daughter wants to transfer it is absolutely something to pursue early on otherwise too many credits will be lost in transferring to graduate within four years.

@lavolpe She is really happy there so far. She is still not decided on a major but as you know she is getting close to the point where she will have to declare. Likea lot of schools the further you are along in your education the harder it is to transfer. Good for you that you were able to clearly identify your goals and know what you need to do to pursue those.

any idea if they tell people before the deadline? I know it’s a long shot but some schools do… this wait is killing me

@frogsinribbons5‌ if they finish evaluation the applications they might release decisions early, but they do not report peoples decisions as they happen

James Madison University

Applied to Arts & Sciences (Commerce)

I’m a first year, with a 3.94 GPA after my first semester
I’m in the Honors Program
ACT: 30
SAT: 1350
High School GPA was around a 4.2, I was ranked 30th in my class of 350
I applied for freshman year but was denied
I am currently doing research with my Econ professor from last semester who gave me a great recommendation
Advisor also gave a great recommendation
Essays were probably pretty mediocre

I think it will help that I am In-State.

ALOT of extra curriculars including high school sports, SGA, paid work, and volunteering

I did not include the fact that I’m in a fraternity (should I have?)

What do you guys think??

@brady1663‌ I think you have a really good shot at getting accepted! Everything seems perf, but if your essays are as mediocre as you think, that could be a red flag to them. Your high school stats seem pretty competitive, why do you think you got denied last year? Was it the essays maybe?

Does anyone want to chance me? When I applied last year in high school I got waitlisted (pretty sure it was because my GPA and SAT score were ok, but not high enough), and I’m currently in my first year at NVCC. I’ll have 32 credits at the end of this semester, plus an additional 16 credits from AP exams that will transfer.

Applied to Arts and Sciences to major in Economics and minor in French
College GPA: 4.0 (will make sure to have 4.0 at the end of this semester too)
High school GPA: 4.05
SAT: 1990
1 recommendation from French professor
Essays were good (I hope). I stressed the fact that NVCC doesn’t have some important classes that I need to take next year.
College ECs: work as a math tutor at school, 2 clubs, volunteer as conversational English tutor
HS ECs: French Honor Society Vice President, 2 other leadership positions, volunteering

They don’t care about our high school ECs according to a blog post I read, but I put them on my app anyway lol. I think they should take them into consideration at least a bit, especially for first year college students.

Do you guys think that we’ll have to wait until after May 1 for our decisions because of the snow days??
