UVA Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

Surprisingly small number of posts compared to the last couple years

Just received my check mark today on SIS. Anybody else?

Check mark?

Well, I’m applying for biology. I have close to a 3.8 now at my Virginia CC. Applying to Hopkins as well. Good luck everyone! >:)

Could anyone chance me?
I’m a current first year student at nvcc. I applied to the college of arts and sciences for biology.

Fall 2014 semester: Bio101, His101, English 111, Math 166. Finished with a 4.0gpa, 15 credits

Spring 2015 semester: Bio 102, Chem 111, Math 173(calculus1), English 112. Sent in mid-semester report with all A’s on it. 16 credits

HS GPA: 2.91 (so afraid it’ll hurt me)

-Phi Theta Kappa Member
-NSCS Member
-Head coach of little brothers soccer team
-Received Student Peace Award my senior year in HS.
-2 recommendations from college professors.

The anticipation is killing me

Yeah, if you go onto your SIS, there is either a circle or check mark. Ive had the circle until today. Along with the check mark, it will say “view decision” in which if you click on it, it says decisions will be made viewable May 1 or something like that…am i the only one?

I can see the check mark too

I got my check mark about three weeks ago – subsequently read the blogs for a few years back, and in the one from 2012 it said that when the checkmark goes up, a preliminary decision on you has been made but that it could change if they receive an unusually talented (or untalented as the case may be) transfer pool or if more accepted first-years attend than expected, etc. Which would be why they don’t release decisions until they’ve processed everyone.

Still waiting on that check mark…

Hey guys! I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if I have a chance to transfer into UVA for Fall 2015?

Stats:
VA resident (nova)
College: Emerson College
High School: #1 Public high school in the country at the time (magnet school for math, science and tech)
High School GPA: 4.0 W (my high school doesn’t show unweighted)
SATs: 2360 (R 800 W 790 M 770)
SAT IIs: Math II 770 US History 800 Lit 800
College GPA: 4.0
Mid-term GPA: 4.0
Extracurriculars: President of a Literary Magazine, copyeditor for another, graphic designer for a club for women in film, writer for a satirical newspaper/blog, member of a screenwriting club

Strengths: SATs/SAT IIs, professor recs (I think), college grades, maybe extracurriculars? Idk, reason for transferring, essays

Weaknesses: definitely high school grades (I’m a humanities person who was stuck at an advanced tech school-- terrible fit; but still, not good), intro courses

Got that yung check mark haha and Jay your transcript looks wonderful! I think you will have no problem getting in (:

And for all our sakes Bow… I hope the preliminary decisions for everyone are positive, 500 natives got in last year so I’m fairly confident we will all be enjoying a beer together come May haha. Everyone here seems to have stellar grades for their first few years in college too!

While I’m up… I guess I might as well give more info on my application.

Instate Resident
Biology (Pediatrics after undergrad)
College GPA: 3.75-8
High school GPA: abysmal 2.1
Extracurricular activities: Consists of church activities and a majority of my time is consumed with taking care of my grandpa throughout my college career.
Strengths: Ive completed all the prerequisites for Arts and Sciences with good grades, extreme upward trend in my GPA, my devotion to my family, provocative essay responses, and a thoughtful recommendation from my Biology professor.
Weaknesses: lack of activities outside of school and family because of responsibilities.

Hope I get in, it’s either UVA, Hopkins, or USD.

About that check mark though

I wonder if it is harder to transfer into UVA coming from a state school. They seem to really have a huge preference towards community college students :/.

For the people who already have the check marks: Are you transferring from a community college? Maybe they do cc students first in the review process since they are given more preference.

I am a cc student and got my check mark yesterday, a guy in class got his 2 days ago, could just be coincidence, as you’ve seen. There’s a dude on here who got his WEEKS ago too. Although I do believe they have to meet a certain quota as they usually have a 1/3 from Virginia community colleges, I don’t think they have special orders in which they review them.

If it were up to me, I would order a computer to sort on instate+stats as top cream then essays+extra+ethnicity, leave off about 10% to back fill mandate quotas. Done. Good luck folks … The end is near!

@McIntireguy123 It can be harder because of the fact that CC students can get better GPA’s if they structure their classes to do so. This contrasts with students that go to colleges like William & Mary where they have grade deflation.

As for quotas, UVa doesn’t technically have any quotes except for the 2:1 instate to OOS ratio. Keep in mind that this is why last years IS acceptance rate was 52% while OOS was something like 23%.

@LaVolpe Yeah unfortunately at my school they have grade deflation where all business classes are a 2.80 and all other college classes are at a 2.9-3.0. :frowning:

@plsplspls are you doing the guaranteed admissions? If so that could be why. I feel like they will not need to even look at the profiles for people who meet the GPA and class guidelines.

I would actually assume it’s harder to get in out of a CC than a state school because of the Guaranteed Admission agreements; the whole deal with being able to transfer to UVA out of a CC is that you prove through two years of strong academics that you’re a great student and worthy of admission, and acceptance after just one year I would assume is more rare than being accepted as a sophomore from a state school. I’m also sure the admissions officers are aware that it’s less extraordinary to pull a 3.8 or above at a CC than at a school with grade deflation (I think probably about 5% of students at my school have 3.8s, whereas in CC’s I would guess the rate to be much higher). The high number of admits you see from CCs probably has a lot to do with people coming in through the Guaranteed Admission program, so don’t let that discourage you if you’re applying from a state school
