@Pilate, just curious how the waitlist transition has been for your son? Any issues with signing up for housing, SOAR, placement testing, etc…? Trying to figure out what hurdles, if any, your son has experienced as he navigates being admitted off of the waitlist. Thank you again for all the information and insight you’ve provided and congrats again to your son!!!
Thanks again! So far no issues. It did take almost two business days after my son’s acceptance before he could access housing (Housing system hadn’t yet received the Admissions status update). It was weird to see all these new application tiles suddenly appear on his Student Center and MyWisc portals.
He had multiple SOAR dates to choose from (he’s going August 1 & 2) and he seemed to have full access to all housing options. I also constructed an elaborate spreadsheet detailing the pros and cons of all the residence halls (of course I did ) which I will share with the group when Waitlist Wave 2 hits.
That’s great to hear!!! I was seeing on FB parents complaining about lack of SOAR dates to choose from, housing waitlists, etc… Also, your son may not have experienced this yet, but online placement testing headaches with overzealous proctors making people essentially empty a room in their house (clearing walls, shelves, etc…), waiting for testing proctors 45-60 minutes after the scheduled start time, etc… Of course you made a spreadsheet!!!
He had at least five SOAR dates to choose from and he’s planning to take the placement tests in person. We haven’t seen anything about housing waitlists. Maybe they reserved some options in each hall for waitlist students?
Just received an email a few minutes ago saying that I got off the waitlist for Mechanical Engineering OOS. I have a difficult decision to make between here and CWRU where I am currently committed to.
Hi all! Just wanted to share that my son just got off the waitlist- Engineering in state.
My son got off the waitlist as well! Computer Engineering OOS.
I think we can now confirm that this rumor was accurate.
Congrats to your son! Do you think he will accept the offer?
Not @pilate but here’s what I remember from last year: my son was given an opportunity to specify up to 8 preferred dorms/room types and choose an optional, dorm-dependent learning/themed community. He was also given the option of 10 or 14 or unlimited meals per week. It wasn’t until late June that he was assigned a dorm (not on his preferred list) that’s in the Lakeshore area (the other being the Southeast area that is more ‘lively’). In early August he found out who his roommate was. He grew to like his dorm, like eating at Dejope, and enjoy walking to class along the shore of Lake Mendota. Unfortunately, he didn’t get selected in the lottery to continue staying in the dorms for year two so he had to move off-campus.
We attended a two-day SOAR session in Union South in early August that was very well run – informative and efficient. The second morning of SOAR was on selecting classes based on major, APs completed and scores received, and results of math and language placement exams. We found this link and this link useful for knowing what AP scores and math placement scores map to which classes at UW–Madison. At the time we were concerned that doing SOAR this late probably meant my son would be waitlisted in most if not all of the classes he needed. He was indeed placed on a few waitlists during SOAR, but UW–Madison appeared to be aware of their waitlist situation and opened up new sessions as needed. He was able to get into all the classes he needed a few days after returning from SOAR except for a gen ed class where he had to pick one that wasn’t his first choice. When selecting classes, he found this link useful for knowing which instructors are generous/stingy in handing out letter grades, a link that is probably quite popular among students there .
@pilate I hesitated to share because you never know what is good info and what is rumor. Ofc doesn’t help us because my daughter is a science major. Hoping there will be some movement soon in L&S. We are seriously stressing over here…
I am right there with you! My son is CS and that’s in L&S and given how competitive it is, I should probably stop hoping against hope!
If anyone hears of any CS acceptances, please speak up!
I am surprised offers started rolling out on a Thursday, hoping it will continue until Friday!!
Congrats to the freshly accepted students! You’ve earned it!!
Congrats on the acceptance! Will he be attending?
Thank you! We’re going to discuss with him tonight. At this point I think he mentally prepared himself to the school he committed to, but he is definitely reconsidering. From a parental perspective Madison is so much closer to us, so I’m hoping he accepts. Might drive up there this weekend to help him decide. I’m glad he got off today, any later I think it would be a much harder decision.
EDIT: He just accepted!
Congrats to everyone!! Very well deserved!!
This does make me a little nervous though…both waves were mainly targeting engineering students. I really do hope they have more spots in the other schools. Praying this isn’t like 2021/2022!!
Im getting really nervous atp . . . I really think an OOS CS like me is a lot this year and so they’re pulling very few cs kids off the waitlist . . .
I would not worry about SOAR dates or housing. Though housing can end up random - it’s all good.
The students talking about the housing wait list missed THEIR earlier deadline. Waitlist and late FA offer students had a later deadline this year with the chaos. They do all the assigning at once, so it doesn’t matter when your housing app gets in assuming it’s in before YOUR deadline. And those waiting list students may still get housing before all is said and done, the housing list does move.
My understanding is they open up spots for both SOAR dates through sign up season and then open seats in popular classes for incoming students throughout SOAR season. Yes, you may end up with a not preferred time, prof, etc. Like registering at any college as a freshman. But they seem to actually do a pretty good job with this. We had a later SOAR date, my kid got all classes he needed across 2 majors including CS. After that, your registration time will be assigned by credit number (which me those AP/DE credits might give you a bump here).
Congrats to the new badgers! I’m glad there is some more joy. Crossing fingers for L&S movement.
Praying for some more waitlist movement soon!! Getting really nervous that they got close to their yield this year…
I just realized. . . demographics play a huge part in who to admit as well. What states are they admitting out of? In my entire school(almost 700 people in my grad class, I personally know like 20 ppl waitlisted at UW madison) none have gotten an offer despite being engineering/l&s. For reference I live in CA. Does anyone know anyone from states of far proximity from UW like CA which have gotten off waitlist?
