UW Madison Waitlist Class of 2024

Daughter decided not to attend Madison so hopefully one of the students on the wait list get her spot. Dad is sad but happy at the same time. Daughter has been a badgers since birth and will continue to be. Good luck to all future badgers!

My daughter (OOS MN) also EA, was deferred & now waitlisted. Was accepted right away by U of MN & U of IA in their Biology Pgrms. Her scores & gpa are well above averages for admitted students. She just wants to know either way so she can move on & start to make plans.

Anyone waitlisted for CS

Yup - my son is.

@programmer13 - my son was EA deferred and now waitlisted CS. We are OOS/NY.

Thank you for making this thread. My son also applied EA, deferred and now waitlist. Seems like a lot of people were waitlisted. Does anyone know of anyone who was rejected? Just wondering what the chances with the waitlist are, as this remains his first choice.
Have you put down deposits on other schools? Have you reached out to the school at all?

My son put a deposit down elsewhere this weekend, so he was in a good spot at that university in finding a roommate, getting the housing he wanted, etc. Since most waitlists don’t start pulling people off until after May 1st, it’s important to find another school and start the process there. Typically, its hard to get off a waitlist, but I don’t know any statistics at Wisconsin.

My son was also deferred EA and waitlisted RD, btw.

I have a question - Why does the common data set for Wisconsin say that they don’t do a waitlist? And yet, here we are waitlisted. Is it new this year? Am I mixing something up? Thanks.

Has anyone heard anything?

no not yet wbu

Nothing either

I doubt they will have much movement from the waitlist (if any) before May 1st.

I emailed them about letting us know before May 1st and they replied with this,

“Thank you for contacting the University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of Admissions and Recruitment. We do not let students on the waitlist know of their decision until after May 1. This is because we will not know if there is room in our Fall class to admit students off of the waitlist until after May 1. We strongly encourage students on the waitlist to make alternative plans for Fall 2020.”

Thanks for sharing this information— good to know. My son applied EA OOS and was then WLed— but he also got in to two schools that he really likes and is moving forward with one of those. My sense is that if the WL gets used at all it is more commonly used for in-state applicants? But that might be inaccurate.

The trends on some other state schools is the opposite of that. Students seem to be choosing to remain close to home, so OOS kids are needed to get the school’s revenue up. A lot more OOS kids are getting pulled from waitlists because of this.

Interesting… Thank you!

I was confused by this as well- I looked at the prior 8 years and Madison does not list any factors for Waitlists but they have had them. My friend’s son got off waitlist for class of 2023 April 30 last year and is currently enrolled.

in state student?

We are still waiting on waitlist. My son got in off of the waitlist of Michigan yesterday. Still a little flummoxed as to why he was waitlisted in the first place! OOS

Just found out our son, OOS-NY got admitted off the waitlist to L&S. He was EA, deferred, and then waitlisted. We’re absolutely thrilled. He’ll be attending UW-Madison for sure.
