Unless VT states they actually reviewed all of the early applications it’s impossible to claim that those admitted are the “top” vs those who came up earlier in the queue.
Well I applied that last day (11/15) and heard today, so app submission date is not the reason.
Bold
I don’t think it’s just “top” applicants, because I know a bunch of those who did NOT hear today. Including high stats Virginia students who applied in early September.
So what is the pattern then?
Unclear as to pattern without more info from admissions office.
Admitted out of state, so they’re also not just doing instate. And I wouldn’t presume it’s because my DC is more “top” than anyone else.
Who knows what it could be? Particular major or some admissions counselors being more efficient than others, last name, etc. They clearly said it doesn’t reflect your status in applicant pool, why would they lie?
You can never take a college at face value. There is ALWAYS a hidden meaning with these types of things.
Say what you need to prop yourself, but not sure they’d need to flat out lie.
Clemson did for example. People called and asked if having the button or not meant a different admissions decison and they said absolutely not. And it turned out it predicted the decision 100% of the time.
I second this, I don’t really think I’m a top applicant (in terms of stats, at least)–I got accepted today with a 3.75 UW GPA, 4.3 W with a 35 ACT and 11 APs. i think it might be major (i applied econ which was probably a mistake in hindsight), a bunch of my super smart/high stats friends who applied cs didn’t hear back yet
im VA resident btw
What they did was eliminate the Early Decision process. Therefore, I am speculating that they offered the students who they generally would accept during the ED process. Leaving those remaining people who did not receive an offer, but who applied Early Action, waiting until late February feeling disappointed and anxious. They also leave open the possibility that at some future point prior to late February, that additional offers will go out. How is it that other great schools are much more clear on the process? I hope someone from VT admissions reads this blog and works to improve the process. It is a great school but this is a disappointing process.
Depending upon your major those are very good stats and could easily be early admit. In terms of CS which falls under Engineering, those stats might not be early admit stats, although really good. That is probably why your friends did not hear back yet.
Very true. For example, a 1390 SAT wouldn’t be a “top” engineering applicant, for certain.
that makes sense–im just wondering how much of a role supplementals played for admissions? they had 4 150 word ones this year so i wonder if that made a huge difference or not
Top stats depend upon major (i.e. CS - Engineering versus Business versus AG). There is no way they simply reviewed the first X (call it 5,000) applications and sent out 25% of the offers. They want to ensure to offer the people who fit their parameters first. If someone is a borderline admit, they will wait to go through more offers before sending out that offer. Just my opinion. I wish you all luck in and hope you gain admission to VT. That said there are many good options. I know someone who got wait listed to VT and then accepted elsewhere. They eventually got accepted to VT but did not accept. They are enjoying college and doing well.
For those who heard today, please post stats on the RESULTS ONLY thread. That way people now and in the future can easily see stats without having to scroll through all these comments.
It is not the top applications. It is the top applications they have reviewed relative to the major they selected. Certain majors are far easier to get into at VT. If you apply as a Math major, for example, your qualifications do not need to be as high as that of Engineering. Each year they know where their cutoff points are for each major based upon last year. If you are above that cutoff point for that major, I am speculating you got admissions today. So, an engineering person might have a 4.6 and not hear back while an ag major may have a 4.2 and have been offered. Those numbers are simply examples. They are still accurate that just because you did not hear today does not mean you won’t be offered. In my opinion, it simply means they may not have reviewed your application OR you are not well above the cut off from last year. Good luck to all!
Typically those short supplemental essays are very important to Virginia Tech admissions.
