Virginia Tech Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

VT engineering pretty much all freshman take the same classes no matter what the major. Then, as long as their grades are on target, they get their choice to move into any of the various majors within engineering. Everyone really is a general engineering major first year.

If you search for Checksheets you can see the required classes for each major. You apply to a major after completing a certain number/type of classes.

I agree. That community college suggestion to such a highly qualified applicant is ridiculous.

That is a head scratcher. Do they care about the gender imbalance?

Community College is generally an amazing option for anyone, highly qualified for a 4 year school or not. You can save so much $$.

You can play around on the published data, but it’s actually surprisingly more likely to be admitted OOS for some majors than in-state. OOS students typically have significantly lower yield.

https://udc.vt.edu/irdata/data/students/admission/index#college

COE in state female - last year, 53% offered rate, 43% yield.
OOS female- 67% offered rate, 11% yield.

Agreed. While I haven’t seen the letter so maybe the wording (or timing) wasn’t good, but in Virginia the community college route is a great opportunity. If you follow the guidelines and meet the requirements, it’s a guaranteed transfer to any (UVA, W&M, VT, VCU,…) VA public university. We know students who completed the requirements during the summer (free tuition plus money for books if you apply to the programs) and fall and then transferred for the spring semester to VT. This timing is similar to some of the schools we’ve seen that condition an admissions offer on a first semester study abroad. It’s not for everyone, but is a real option for many.

Tech considers rigor, GPA, their essay, first generation college student status and residency to be “very important” for admissions.

She has a great SAT score and GPA, decent APs, strong ECs, but she is out of state, probably not a first generation college student, and maybe they didn’t like her essays. (Or maybe specific math and science grades weren’t high enough, or she didn’t have advanced math like AP Calc.) Also, maybe they didn’t think she would really attend. With those stats, she will probably have better options. If Tech is truly her top choice, she should speak to someone in admissions and let them know, and see if they can offer insight to why she wasn’t accepted.

As far as the gender difference in Engineering, based on the published numbers from last year, only 26% (4,887) of their applications were from female students. The acceptance rate for those female students was 63%, compared to a 55% acceptance rate for males.

It’s even more drastic if you look at in-state males (42% accepted) to OOS females (68%). So they ARE likely giving female students a little boost in admissions.

However, even if they accepted 100% of the female students who applied, that still wouldn’t achieve a 50/50 split. It would be only 44% female. Plus, they would be turning down more qualified male students just for gender reasons, which would be discriminatory.

Curious about this. So that student graduates HS in June, immediately enrolls in CC and completes two semesters of CC by the end of the fall term. They must have applied to VT sometime in the fall and been accepted before January. Then they enroll at VT in January. Presumably the transfer is a regular transfer and not guaranteed admission because they have not yet received their associate degree. Is that correct?

Very helpful. Thanks.

Congrats to all accepted. My son was waitlisted. Is there an official Vtech Waitlist page for Fall 2024 kids? TIA

A friend of the family went through the guaranteed process this year and is now at VT and started in January. Not everyone can complete the requirements in the 2 semesters, but with some AP credits it is definitely doable. My understanding is that if you follow the roadmap and get the grades it is a guaranteed transfer even with the December graduation and before graduation application. The stress level may go up if you are unsure you will get the GPA for the guaranteed transfer. There are advisors at the CC and VT that are very knowledgeable in the process and checking the boxes. I believe this link outlines it VCCS Guaranteed Admission Agreements | Virginia Tech

On a side note, the transition has gone very well so far. There are welcome days in January and transfers can live off or on campus Transfer Experience | Living-Learning Programs | Virginia Tech

I created a waitlist thread and pinned it to the board until June 1

Anyone knows VT’s policy for AP and Dual Enrollment credit transfer? i.e. 5 only for AP and A for DE? Is there a cap or maximum credits you can transfer? Also, how easy is it to change majors? Thank you.

Not sure about DE and potential max credit cap, but here is a link you can use to see which AP classes and scores can transfer into credit at VT (The VT equivalent class is also listed): – AP Students | College Board.

Thank you so much!

Thank you.

There is a cap on AP and other test credit. Not sure about transfer credit. Should be listed in those links. Pretty sure for transfer credit it’s a C or better and only the credit transfers not the grade. The transfer credit link is for VA CCs. Not sure about other schools.

For change of major do you mean change within the same college (ex mech eng to civil) or from one college to another (ex agriculture to engineering)?

Very helpful links. Thank you! Transfer from business to natural science or major in business minor in science.

Pretty sure for minors you just declare but not sure about major changes for those colleges.

There is an amazing VT parents page on Facebook where you can find these answers and much more (need advice, a ride, something driven up that your kid forgot :slightly_smiling_face: and more). It’s Virginia Tech Parents and has about 28,000 members. Prospective Hokie parents are welcome too!
