Mid February…I’m thinking Friday, Feb 14th. Which is brutal for us bc we have an admitted student trip planned for Penn State that weekend which is his #2 school. I’d love to be able to cancel that if he were to get into VT before then!
I don’t think there’s any other school so ‘like’ Va tech. So your kid wins either way. Except maybe food - which Va Tech rates highly for. But seeing Old Main everyday would be awesome.
These two are truly substitutional in my mind.
Most colleges will be releasing their decisions by the end of this week (Jan 31). I am still optimistic that VT will not wait for Feb 14 but release on Feb 7.
We’re taking the same admitted students trip to PSU that weekend! We’d likely weigh our current acceptances to VT regardless… but VT is VERY high on our list.
To @tsbna44’s point, our S25 is a foodie and VT knocks it out of the park.
We visited both at the end of February last year. Loved the feel of both schools, and I actually liked the atmosphere of PSU better. However, one was 30 degrees, and the other was an abnormal 60 degrees.
FYI, make sure you note the additional tuition bump for Junior and Senior years depending on your student’s intended major… Rates Effective 2025 Fall Semester UP | Tuition Information. That ended up nixing PSU for him, as it would’ve been an additional $15,540 ($7,770 per) for out of state Engineering/Business.
Regardless, I would’ve been fine with either school. Both are tough/remote places to get to. Also, he mentioned over winter break, that there would’ve been a good chance that he had the exact same friend group had he chosen PSU, as all his VT friends had them high on their lists also.
Safe travels and good luck with your decisions!!!
Thanks so much for this added insight. This will be our first visit to PSU and I’m trying to get D25 excited about it as we are most likely staring down all rejections from this point out (with the exception hopefully being VT which is 50/50 I’d say).
I had no idea on the tuition bump for Engineering for the last two years. I also didn’t realize it was that much more expensive than VT. Ugh.
From the schools my son considered last year, I think PSU was the only one that has that big of a tuition bump Junior and Senior year, at most maybe $1K.
Freshman & Sophomore years can be fairly comparable.

VT has a $1000 engineering fee per semester vs. a tuition difference (I realize it’s semantics, but the point is that $1K per term isn’t awful - I think UVA has like a 10K fee or something).
Some schools charge for certain higher paying majors such as engineering and business.
Some charge for Honors.
Some charge for the final two years - U Mich, Central Michigan are two.
I think many parents/families miss that the tuition is sometimes not the full tuition.
Some schools have what is, essentially, a supplies/materials charge I think. S25 is looking at Construction Management (aka building science at VT). I think all three schools where he’s applied have an extra add on for this major and at all of them it appears to be tied to the higher costs associated with running the program.
TBH, at this point, that additional cost is completely irrelevant to us! Just release decisions already!

YES!!!
We love both schools, PSU and VT. The new engineering facilities, the enthusiasm, new faculty. I don’t think you could go wrong, either way.
Does anyone think VT will release this Friday to coincide with UVA???
One showed their cards, so let’s see if tech wants to truly beat UVA.
VT must be every admission officer’s dream… nice campus, great food, affordable housing in a beautiful mountain town and those admission decisions, we’ll release them when they’re g0d d4mn good and ready!
I hope so!!!
Do they usually release decisions on the same day as UVA?
No, they do not typically release results on the same day. I definitely wouldn’t count on it.
I looked at previous years when they had ED and EA and those EA decisions were all on a Friday in mid-Feb (one as late as 2/17). if it were the same this year, it would be Friday Feb 14.
