Wow, almost the same, as my son is a Freshman just starting Spring semester, and absolutely loves it, and we’ve all agreed he ended up at the right place, even though we’re from the Seattle area, and getting to and from is a challenge.
When he was lucky enough to receive his acceptance last December (sorry folks), his comment was “too bad I won’t be going there”, as it was literally like 6th or 7th on his list at that time, but it had the exact major he was looking for. Several rejections, a few deferrals/waitlists, mixed in with a few acceptances. I think visiting campus sealed the deal last February, as it was in the mid 60’s and campus was alive, as the other two schools we saw that trip were in the 20’s and 30’s, granted his hair froze walking to class yesterday, and he had an 8am today around single digits…
The thing is, all our kids are amazing and high achieving, but unfortunately, so are all the other kids applying to the same schools. When you get around a 97th percentile SAT you think you’re set, but then you see acceptances with tons of mid to high 1500’s… Your kid has a 3.9 UW with 9 AP’s, all 4’s and 5’s, at a challenging HS with plenty of Ivy and “public Ivy” placements, so you think getting into XYZ school shouldn’t be a problem based on all the “rate my chances” websites, but again so did everyone else…
The emotions are hard. Lot’s of tears, lot’s of doubt and second guessing (what if I had applied to that major instead, what if I didn’t take that class and took this class in HS, what if I had written about that, etc…).
He said he heard that you’ll know the first two breaks (Thanksgiving and Winter) if you’re where you want to be. If you’re more excited about going back to school, than you are staying home, you made the right choice!!!
