Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

Congrats! My son also has a deposit down on Clemson. More decisions to come for him. He wasn’t quite as In…“Mostly In” I think.

@drewh02 , Keep the faith but hopefully you have another school that you are getting excited about. I am happy for those OOS kids getting off the waitlist that truly want to attend, but I really feel for the many instate kids that still are waiting. Good luck to you!

@HokieCrazy , Are you saying you now have deposits down on both Clemson and Virginia Tech? You need to withdraw one ASAP unless the rules have changed. Anybody know if double depositing is okay these days? And if he gets off any private school waitlists and prefers that school, he should withdraw again as soon as he has put a deposit down on another school. Maybe the rules have changed though?

Since he was put on VT’s waitlist, there is nothing wrong with depositing at another school, especially since VT wasn’t likely to pull him off until after the May 1st deadline. It is considered unethical to double deposit when a waitlist isn’t involved, but in this case there was. He will be firmly deciding before May 1st, now, to avoid any unethical dilemmas. Hope that explains the situation. And, btw, he still has 3 other waitlists in the queue.

Hopefully, that is correct. We went through waitlists with one son- an acceptance with one school, then two waitlists . Lost two deposits before finally getting off Virginia Tech’s waitlist. But never had more than one deposit going at the same time. Deposited at school one, withdrew as soon as 1st waitlist came through, then withdrew again when VT waitlist came through. But that was years ago so things may very well have changed about depositing. Good luck with the decision.

Yeah, plan is to let Clemson know, asap. He only got accepted a few hours ago. I’m sure we’ll lose that deposit. We don’t plan on having both deposits in play beyond the amount of time it takes to notify admissions.

Does anyone know the deal about financial aid? My financial aid doesn’t show anything…

I think they have to refund deposit up to May 1…unless he was early decision.

Yes, should get the deposit back at least.

Double deposits are a no no if you’ve been ACCEPTED to both schools. As a matter of fact, an article was just posted about that today here on this website https://insights.collegeconfidential.com/ But yes, different scenario when a student commits and submits a deposit to a school they were accepted to but then is offered a waitlist spot at their #1 choice and backs out of the other school.

Congrats to you too HokieCrazy! Clemson is in state for us and I’m doubting he’d get any financial aid at VT. Just don’t feel like it would be worth the extra money. Both are great schools, so no way they can go wrong with either one.

Haven’t heard of any yet. My son is in state too. fingers crossed they start pulling Virginia kids soon.

We are in state and haven’t heard anything either.

@Spidermom67 congrats to your son. If you don’t mind me asking, what was his math SAT? Thanks

@Va2Mom The issues with double depositing really apply after May 1 when colleges are supposed to have firm numbers of who plans to attend. I realize that admissions people frown upon it at any time, but it really becomes an ethical issue after May 1.

@HokieCrazy congrats to your son. I am sure he is very happy. It does seem like most of the wait lists are engineering and OOS as well.
Double deposits are unethical yes but with the climate we have, I think you will see many students doing this because they are unsure of where they want to go more than any other year. Many schools now are pushing back acceptance days to June 1 I was just notified of 2 schools my son has gotten into. So there is still alot of uncertainty.

@HokieCrazy From one Hokie to another, congrats! Hopefully, he gets to experience everything Blacksburg has to offer this semester! Got one-and-a-half semesters here so far at Tech and I wouldn’t change the thing!

@HokieCrazy Is your son going to drop the other 3 waitlists he’s on now that he has gotten into Virginia Tech? I think it’s going to get interesting with a lot of waitlists this year, probably more kids getting off waitlists than usual.

@rbc2018 Yes right. Let’s hope kids who get accepted off waitlists after May 1 quickly go back to the school to which they committed to let them know. I’ve seen a bunch of parents on FB say that because of stay at home orders, they are putting down deposits at 2 schools to give their kids more time to hopefully see the schools in the summer. That means it could be July/August before they accept to one school and the other school offers their spot to a waitlist student. So wrong!

@ hokiecrazy. I dont usually get on these sites but I caught your son’s plight and couldnt help but follow (and throw in a little prayer ?). My D is a current freshman at VT and I used this board last year to figure things out. I cant tell you how happy I am to hear of his acceptance! Congratulations and best of luck to your son on this new journey! Go Hokies!!
