Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

Does anyone know if there’s been any update for in-state engineering kids or in-state in general?

@Va2Mom Right, it’s unethical after May 1. I think a lot of people miss that important distinction. Prior to May 1, someone might put down multiple deposits at multiple places to ‘get in the queue’ for housing, since bigger schools make a big deal out of the importance of doing that early to get decent housing. In most cases they will lose the other deposit when they make a final choice (and of course notify the other school that they are withdrawing their application/acceptance by May 1).

Is it too late to send a letter of continued interest? Or is it not recommended to do it?

I don’t think we’ll remove his name from the other waitlists (maybe 1 of them). At least 2 of them are super-stretch dream schools that if they came with a good offer, he might pick over VT. We’ll see. We’re taking this 1 step at a time, though. I’d like to have everything resolved by May 1st.

Thank you so much! My son has quite the following on here, now, and he’s never actually been on the site. LOL. I appreciate everybody supports and prayers. As I said earlier, he’s bouncing off the walls and hasn’t been this happy since Clemson accepted him in November. The wave of waitlists were really quite disappointing for him.

I’m not sure how much it helps at VT, but it can’t hurt…and I don’t think it’s too late.

If I write a letter of continued interest, who should I send it to?

There is a whole discussion about double depositing in a recent thread, and a few other older ones. Differences of opinion and little mention about whether or not there is a difference in whether it is okay between making multiple enrollment deposits before May 1 or not. Might be best to air on the side of caution, and minimize enrollment deposits. One at a time is always going to be okay. Multiple deposits , even before May 1, still effect other kids , who may be hoping to get off a waitlist at their #1 school.

There are lots of threads on this, most recently this one. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/22696783#Comment_22696783

@positive patricia Perhaps send an email to the main admissions email or to an admissions staff person you’ve already had any contact with. Good luck to you!

@HokieCrazy Best wishes to you and your son. There may be a wild ride ahead for you in terms of waitlist decisions and possible lost deposits if he keeps getting off other waitlists. We lost $800 in deposits years ago when son got off 2 different waitlists. No fun but he ended up where he was probably meant to be. Go Hokies! And good luck going forward!

@sevmom Thank you for the best wishes. I think VT will be his home ultimately, but we’ll see.

As a note, I read this from Collegeboard, which I thought you might be interested in:

https://professionals.collegeboard.org/guidance/applications/ethics

The paragraph I found interesting was this:

As you said, there isn’t anything specific about May 1st, but since this is really an ethical question vs. some sort of legal one, I do think it makes sense for May 1st to be a date to drive for. May 1st is when others will truly start coming off of waitlists in earnest, so we will be making sure we’re not taking anybody’s spots by that time.

I don’t quite understand that statement from NACAC that you posted. If you are waitlisted and get off the waitlist, you are supposed to withdraw from another school that you have deposited to. There really is no double depositing at that point? You are now dealing with two acceptances , and need to make a timely choice to pick one. For instance, if your son gets off another waitlist, he will probably be given a few days to make a decision. If he decides he wants the next school, he needs to let Virginia Tech ( and Clemson if he has not already withdrawn) know so they can offer acceptance to someone else who may be anxiously awaiting a good response, like @positive patracia may be looking for. Good luck to those still waiting for good news and hope you’re getting excited about your other options in case VT does not work out.

Hi!
Just thought I’d pop in and let you all know something.
I was in the same boat as many of you during my senior year of high school last year. I was waitlisted to Virginia Tech (my dream school) with really high stats. I was very upset and understand all of your pain. However, they did not accept anyone off the waitlist. So, I decided to go to VCU for one year and I was so happy I went there for one year. I recently got in as a transfer to VT! Just know that this is always an option if you do not get off the waitlist. VT’s website has plenty of resources so you have a seamless transfer to their university! It’s not the end, trust me. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will be happy to help. I know some of you needed to hear that  since I heard the same thing last year and it made me feel much better.

@sevmom The person pulled off a wait list can have time to decide. Others got far more time to decide. @HokieCrazy has been very transparent about their process. Hokiekid can take a couple weeks to make a final decision (or whatever deadline the university communicates, which is 5/1 for VT unless they give the pulled-off-waitlist person a specific date - but think about it, why would they have to decide before 5/1 when they JUST heard, while others heard in March and have until 5/1?

Yes, the “double-depositing” is considered OK by NACAC in case of waitlisted applicants. Plus, this is a different year than most.

Maybe he needs more info from VT? For instance, needs to make a call into FA office, or wait for FA. There could be various reasons why he cannot decide within 48 hours…and since he heard IN ADVANCE OF 5/1, he has until 5/1.

I guarantee there are others double-deposted at Clemson and other schools. There are also MANY that won’t go to Clemson but haven’t emailed them to say “not coming”…which is a bigger swing for them b/c they don’t have a portal that has a “NO THANKS” button.

Yes if he is 100 percent sure, he should tell Clemson. But he can also, ethically, sleep on it until 5/1.

He does have until May 1st to tell VT. Hasnt he already done so but didn’t have to until May 1. Nobody has said it is not the case that a kid has to respond before May 1. . I wish @HokieCrazy 's son all the best and have never indicated otherwise (and have never used the term unethical in this discussion either).

After May 1st, the time to respond to a waitlist offer will probably be less than it is now(now having until May 1 because that is the standard response date). All the best to those waiting for waitlist offers from all the schools.

It’s important to get the deposit in at VT, because housing is done in order of receipt. So I can see putting down the $400 if he is pretty sure, but still sleeping on it til 5/1.

Yes, expect less time for decisions if taken off WL after 5/1.

My NJ son got off wait list on Friday and accepted into General Engineering. We were not expecting to hear so soon but are extremely happy that we did!

Congratulations!

Great to see so many getting good news!

How was your son notified he was accepted off the waitlist??? My daughter is dying to hear! Thank you! Congrats!

We received an email and the portal was updated very shortly after that.

Are they notifying out of state first? I’m seeing people post saying they got off the waitlist and are out of state. Has anyone in state received a notification?
