Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

@“positive patracia” - VT does not consider 1st semester grades from senior year for EA or RD as I know. Therefore, I doubt they will review anyone’s senior grades during waitlist selection process.

I wonder if they’ve already offered the 950 spots. https://www.richmond.com/news/virginia/schapiro-covid-19-infecting-virginia-college-admissions/article_0172fb93-ab9b-5b7e-b622-b5e70573bdf0.html

Interesting read. My guess is that they’ve offered some but not all, since there’s still OOS offers that have until 5/15 to respond. The bigger portion of IS offers could come 5/16 pending how many OOS said yes between 5/1 and 5/15.

Strange thing happens to UVA waitlist process. It could also happen to VT in the next few weeks. Good luck to those who are still waiting.

What’s strange? I read through the whole thread and it reads just like a normal wait list thread.

Agree. I don’t see what is strange either? And not sure what is happening with UVA has much to do with Virginia Tech anyway . I guess there could be a few instate kids that get off the UVA waitlist and switch from VT to UVA. But, even that would not be that many kids.

It just seems odd to me after reading post#121 which is way below UVA’s academic standard but anything can happen this time around.

But, why wouldn’t UVA consider that student? They use holistic admissions. 1300 is certainly a decent score. Plus the student applied ED instate to CAS initially, had 12 AP’s, 4 + GPA, great EC’s and essays, as well as volunteer activities. Doesn’t seem odd to me at all.

Those stats look middle 50% to me based on their common data set. Lots of leadership on that application too.

I do enjoy posts to CC that self-proclaim their essays as being BEAUTIFUL.

Yeah, that was a little over the top.

How many people are estimated to be on the waitlist?

There’s no published data to say for sure. If you google virginia tech common data set you can see historical data on how many were offered a spot, how many accepted offer, and then how many were ultimately enrolled from the wait list.

No engineering offers have been made to in state students. Thought I’d save someone the reading prior to this point.

I know of at least one of my daughter’s classmates who was taken off the engineering waitlist just before May 1. We are in-state.

Two of my in-state friends were offered an engineering spot before may 1st as well

I got off the waitlist today morning around 9AM for Psychology! I have a 3.94 weighted and a 1430 SAT. Thank you to everyone who answered my questions on this thread! Good luck to everyone in the future!

Our DD also got off the wait list this morning for the College of Science. We are in-state. She has a 3.91 weighted and 1310 SAT.

She started out as ED, so it has been a long wait. We are thrilled she got in…but what would have been a slam dunk earlier is now so clouded by how far down the road she has gone with her 2nd choice (where she accepted and found a roommate already).

A question for you folks who have experience with this process. What are the disadvantages of accepting admission to VT so late in the game?

The only concern we are aware of is that she would be last in line for the “dorm lottery.” How significant is that, and what else are areas of concern?

@Oldtimer42 - Congratulations to your daughter. What is her major in College of Science? Where are you located in VA? Thank you.

@Oldtimer42 Congratulations, and good for her for being proactive with that 2nd choice. She may not realize it but this is a good dilemma to have.

The only disadvantage is going to be dorm/room selection. There’s no real hierarchy for course selection for incoming freshmen (most of her schedule will be preset by her advisor for 1st semester). Some folks are very particular about their child’s living situation on campus, but I believe that kids care a lot less than mom and dad do. Some take a sense of pride in spending their 1st year in a less than popular res hall - strong bonds from common suffering, lol. Has she ever been to summer camps (athletic, band, etc.) that weren’t “glamping”? If so, she’ll do fine in whatever dorm is left when she gets to choose. (Keep in mind - if she can connect with someone who hasn’t found a roomie yet but who was accepted earlier, then that person can select the room so her odds can definitely improve).
