Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

Congrats on everyone accepted! How much time have you been given to make a decision on whether or not to attend? Thanks.

@Oldtimer42 - My older son is a Junior Hokie. He was on the later side to sign his housing contract but ended up in a great dorm (West AJ) thanks to joining the Residential College LLC. This also meant he had guaranteed on-campus housing for his sophomore year.

Still waiting hopefully on a waitlist pull for his younger brother

@Oldtimer42 Congrats! Was your DD notified by email & via her VT portal? Did you also receive an email?

Thank you for your kind and helpful responses! It is a grueling process. Really hope everyone on this Forum gets a shot to get off the list!

We live in Fairfax County. Our daughter’s major request was the general College of Science. The kids offered this morning have until May 22nd to accept or decline.

Several other students at her school also got in this morning. They are (of course) chatting it up already and all are concerned their late admission means they might end up living in the overflow hotels in Blacksburg. Are the hotels still in play for next year’s freshmen or have they controlled Admissions this year where that won’t be done?

The Inn at VT’s arrangement was for a single year only. They are actively rotating out the students and student furniture and expect that to be completed by June 1. I’m not sure about the HIE - originally that too was supposed to be a single year arrangement since they were scheduled to do a full reno this summer. I could envision HIE trying to cut a sweetheart deal for another year with VT if they predict low occupancy for 2020-21. Or, it may be advantageous to do that reno as planned.

So happy for you @“positive patracia” !!!

Thank you!!

@Oldtimer42 I agree with @ShenVal18 , the parents seem to obsess over dorm details much more than the kids. Pritchard has been wildly popular in recent years, but it’s honestly a pretty mediocre old-school dorm. My son absolutely loved it there. Another neighbor decided late and ended up in Slusher Tower several years ago. It was an old, crappy dorm (in fact widely considered the crappiest of them all), and to this day she is grateful she ended up there because she made friends for life. The hotel overflow situation this year was unprecedented and the result of a lot of variables, including poor admissions management by VT. They hopefully learned from their mistakes and were cautious with admissions this year, hence pulling kids off the waitlist. There is also a lot of concern among universities about lower yields this year because of covid uncertainties, so I will be shocked if they end up exceeding dorm space this year. Please assure your students that dorm variables are minor compared to picking a school that they will love.

Dorms are only as good as the students in them, and there is no way to predict that, anyway.

@Adwc19 How’d your older son like the West AJ LLC? My son signed up for that, as well. I liked the 2-year commitment and he always liked the schools (Rice, Vanderbilt, WashU, etc.) that boast a Residential College (Hogwarts) atmosphere. Just curious as to your son’s thoughts about that piece of it.

My kid was in Barringer, all male and not considered a prime place to be. He loved it, kids from all over on his floor, fun intramural teams they cooked up, very good friends he still sees, despite the distances since they’ve graduated. Agree, that parents seem to care more about this stuff than the kids.

As much as I like to hope they will keep pulling off the waitlist, seems like they’ll only be pulling a handful more off the waitlist. I am super bummed because this was my #1 choice for years, but it’s time to start looking at a #2. Getting the feeling there will not being any 5/15 pulls. Good luck to all!

@HokieCrazy My son liked the Residential College LLC, but was definitely more engaged in his freshman year. The nice thing about the LLC is that you can choose to be as involved as you want. They have Monday “FaculTEA” meetings with food and different speakers, but nothing was mandatory. I appreciated the 2 years guaranteed in the dorms (I wasn’t ready to think about apartments 2 months after dropping him off!). WAJ has AC and is in a great location near dining halls. The dorm was mixed with LLC and non-LLC members and several of his friends from freshman year moved off-campus in the second year.

@mikeypie71 I’m not so sure. Tech’s OOS & foreign student enrollment is predicted to be way down this fall due to the pandemic. Juan Espinoza announced recently that they’re planning on offering spots to 950 more in state students to make up for it. Here’s the article. That being said, soul searching about a good #2 fit for you is a wise choice. Good luck to you!

With the way VT processes waitlist so far, do you think there will be one last pull on Monday (May 18) and waitlist process will be wrapped up after that? Or maybe this is it after the pull two days ago?

With there still being the 5/15 deadline for those who were offered on 5/1, there may still be some add’l offers after Friday. It’s interesting that those who were offered yesterday were given a shorter timeline (10 days) to accept/decline. I wouldn’t be surprised if 5/22 remains fixed as final deadline for any remaining offers.

Has anyone hoping to get in for engineering heard anything?

Engineering - No one on the board has posted they/their child has gotten a spot. Two people shared they knew someone who had an offer right before May 1st. Only 6 more weeks of waiting left, good luck!

@MomRVA - Actually, several OOS students have posted on this board about being accepted for Engineering from the waitlist in mid-April.

For all wondering, I have contacted admissions and the next “wave” as they call it off the waitlist will be next week! Hoping for the best.
