@craystonemom , I don’t know how many they take for University Studies, but when VT Admissions did an Instagram Live session this fall, they said that University Studies was probably going to fill quickly…they were encouraging applicants to pick another option. But, who knows? As crazy as things have been with VT admissions this year, anything could happen. I wish your son all the best!
In 2018, Virginia Tech let several people off the waitlist when Regular Decision came out. This year Regular Decision comes out on the 5th of March. Do we think anyone will be let off? (Hoping so for my sake)
@Makingsense There is a difference between minority and underrepresented minority, so perhaps there was miscommunication between VT representatives and your school counselors.
Ugh. That’s not good. When D took her tour 2 years ago, they told her University Studies was the way to go. She had no idea what she wanted to major in and got in RD. Fast forward 2 years, S applies ED, gets deferred, then waitlisted with almost identical GPA, SATs, etc. as his sister. Go figure.
I think everyone here universally believes that there will be people come off of the waitlist this year. After overacceptance last year they had to put an insurance policy in place that it wouldn’t happen again this year - by means of a heavy use of waitlist early on.
They really had no choice. They know they will lose some good candidates that way (that will move on to another school before they get accepted of the waitlist) … but until they get better handle on yields with the Coalition App I think we are going to see this trend not only this year but next few.
I’ve given up trying to figure out any of this!? Our daughter is waitlisted for the business school; we are making other plans. I do wish your son the best of luck!
VT and other schools post stats on admissions broken down and granular. They are eye opening. Seach on them and you will find.
Rooting for ya Hopeful Hokie (and my own as well)
@Curiousity2 - Could you please post the link for VT admission stats this year? Thank you.
The full data on applications, offers, enrolled, etc. by college for the current applicants won’t be posted until after summer. Sometime between RD results and orientation the admissions dept. usually posts a snapshot of the overall class. Go here and then drill down:
I called and was told “you are an ideal candidate for VT and there isn’t anything you could have done or should have done or anything we are missing. We just ran out of seats by the time we got to your name” I have a 4.4 weighted GPA, 1420 SAT and 35 ACT. Numerous clubs, NHS secretary, 2 sports, volunteer, Leadership Cohort, Dual Enrollment etc. VT was my first choice and I thought a safe one. Numerous classmates with much lower GPA’s (3.6) and 1100 SAT scores were accepted. I am very confused.
COE? I think this is the canned message they are delivering to the wait-listed students. Hold tight and hope for a call in May.
What major? and I think they are just saying this for everyone waitlisted as well given the fact that they havent even looked at their regular d people while making your decision, plus they say they take 20% ed, 60% ea and 20% rd so I think everyone who contact they are going to say that I think…
Unfortunately what you have been told is what HAS to be said…it’s the same for job interviewees these days. If anybody in the Admissions Office or any Hiring Manager would ever say anything that came close to “critiquing” an applicant, they would set themselves up for litigation, etc. Unfortunately, that’s just a sign of our overly litigious society, and (in this case) does not provide the applicant or candidate with any justification as to “why didn’t I get admitted?” or “why didn’t I get the job?”. Unfortunately, being provided with some justification might actually help an individual reconcile the reasons behind why they failed to achieve something, whether it be a job or admission to a university. This is never going to change and unfortunately will always lend itself to a perceived “lack of transparency” in the process. Our kids have been accepted to (and denied by), a variety of universities and Service Academies; we have long since stopped asking why and just gone forward with the opportunities that have been presented - ALL IN!
Most likely for us, too. Just hope he isn’t “SORTA IN”.
Well if what they are saying is true, then you should be able to find a pattern within the same major to give an order. Date application submitted or alphabetically by name? They are saying, for each major, they had some minimum set of criteria and they had some “list” and just started accepting everyone that met that minimum until they reached a limit. Then everyone meeting the minimum after was waitlisted. I would guess there would be some preference give to in state. Not sure I buy this, but ok.
Or they took everyone that met the minimum and randomly picked until they met the # limit?
Or it’s just how they choose to answer the question to people that are asking. I don’t think it makes sense to try and determine how things were really done based on what they are telling us in their canned answer.
Psych major. I agree likely given a canned response. Hoping for good news in May.
It might not be as canned as you think. The part about being a successful candidate is generally true for all waitlisted applicants as they usually won’t even put you on the waitlist unless they think you can be successful at the school. Now if it was as random as just running out of spots not sure it that is 100% true, but I think there may be some truth to that with the randomness of accepted vs waitlisted we have seen.
