Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

Canned doesn’t mean not true. That it is 100% true that all of the candidates are qualified just allows them to say it in their canned response. My point is that when people call and they get that response, it has nothing to do with the caller. It’s not like they looked up the application and said, “Oh, well, you are a perfect candidate…” blah blah blah. It’s a canned response.

@HokieCrazy Folks need to also take into account that the person who answers the phone in the admissions office is not generally an admissions official or reviewer of applications. If you’re transferred to an actual admissions rep they are likely to be even more measured in their response to questions.

Yeah - that’s another good point. Either way, they are likely reading from a script…or are well-trained at what to say.

My son is in state but attended 3 different high schools. Tech had planned to fill the majority of their class with Ed and ea As everyone knows computer engineering has always been competitive and the stats differ from schools ie ag is very low. We r thrilled my son was accepted into engineering with a 1500 sat and a 4.7 W and 4.0 uw gpa along with starting his own apps and company.

cool

@Kyunghwa did you mean to post that in a different thread? (since your son is obviously not waitlisted)

Sorry to hear you were waitlisted. I’m impressed with your credentials and also scratching my head.

I’m an international student attending HS in Virginia, just got waitlisted for Math Major.
SAT 1520, 5 on AP Calc AB, 800 on SAT Subject Math II, 4.12 weighted GPA.
VTech is not my top choice but I didn’t expect to be waitlisted.

Those stats are pretty much inline with a lot of the people on the waitlist for COE, unfortunately.

So what deficiency do we believe the COE admissions is seeing in this set of statistics?

I must be missing something haha.

people potentially using tech as a safety

There have been a lot of theories thrown out on this and the EA threads if you want to go back and read through them. Some say it’s yield protection, some say that the stats aren’t weighted as heavily as the content of the essays, ec’s, leadership, etc, and others are saying its related to diversity. We’ll see how it all shakes out after the waitlist starts to get pulled from or gets closed. Until then, recommend focusing in other directions, because you’ll never get a real answer from admissions.

Not definciencies but I also think they look at GPA more than standardized SAT Tests. Fact is that person has terrfic SAT but a 4.12 weighted GPA doesn’t sound all that great - - when your competing with people that have 4.5 weighted gpa or more (and yes you have to compare to rest of school).

If you received a waitlisted decision are you still considering Virginia Tech?

Yes

My son is staying on the waitlist. He was accepted to all the other colleges he applied to, but VT has always been his #1. I anticipate losing the deposit at his #2 when/if VT pulls him off the WL.

My son never really had a true #1, but I believe he’s in the same situation as your son, now. I think he’d take VT over his #2, and I’m ok with losing a deposit for that.

Any idea when they would start pulling kids off waitlist?

I’d guess May 2nd at the earliest.

@HokieCrazy I’ve been following Ohio State as well (my son is deciding between OSU and VT) and they do rolling admissions during regular decision. What’s interesting is that in the last 3 or 4 weeks they have accepted a LOT more kids than they normally have in the past at this point in the cycle. Like at least 25% more. Speculation is that they are expecting yield numbers to be totally out of whack with the pandemic, especially if this continues into the fall. I’m wondering if VT is recognizing the same possibility and will pull a considerable number of kids from the waitlist.
