Waitlists -- Will this year be different?

You can rank up to 300 programs. The Match registration fee covers up to 20 and then $30 per rank. The program directors don’t see the ranking of applicants. They just rank, and applicants also rank. There is a matching algorithm. It is very binding, and if you don’t go, they report you to your medical school, board, and many other places. Basically, they ruin your chance to be matched in the future. There will be no financial aid because residents are considered university employees, and they get paid based on the programs, PGY, and location. We lived on that salary for six years, and it wasn’t easy but doable. I hope I answered your questions.

I read here that Tulane has gone to its WL

I am asking because I do not know: do applicants coming off waitlist ever get merit offers? With COAs at 90+, and us needing to get down to around 55+, and being a no need family, I told my ds not to send any LOCIs. Was that wrong?

Has anyone heard anything from Pitt?

I’ve heard about a few people that were taken off the waitlist this week. My daughter is still waiting, but applied in late February so that definitely doesn’t help.

Anyone moved off the NC State waitlist?

It depends on the college and how they are trying to fill their unanticipated gaps. Some offer non-need based aid to get you to think about giving up what you may have committed to.

Some shift from need blind admissions to need aware with the waiting list. So that changes the game as well.

This year may become a weird shell game as those that need aid have to wait on aid packages.

I remember some college wait lists asking where else you were considering or other questions that were a little over the line.

If the college allowed a LOCI or asked for one, if one was not sent, he may not get any consideration. Then there are others that will be emailing asking them to consider transferring in a year…it is all a weird process.

I agree with @Pathnottaken - schools are going to have different approaches on the matter but also note that you’re looking to close a $35K+ gap and that kind of merit is extremely rare even through the EA/RD cycle.

Does your S have any affordable options now? Some state schools will likely be in your budget.

This is the answer I was looking for. S committed somewhere already. Wanted to make sure I did not stear him wrong on not pursuing waitlists, based on the assumption that a full pay family coming off a waitlist would certainly be full pay.

I’m curious how aid is factoring into decisions this year vs. prior years. I understand the delay in knowing what your package is but I’m curious once received, are the packages less than expected? It seems as though there are a lot of people who, once they get their package, are surprised at how little aid they are receiving. Is this normal or is this new/happening more often? If new and/or happening more often, I could see how this could really impact yield and, subsequently, waitlists.

Providence College went to their waitlist yesterday. Has communicated that additional offers, of which there will be few, will be after May 1.

GWU has gone to their waitlist. I assume from what I have been reading many have not gotten aid packages, which contributes to this. Also the other stuff is not helping.

Per the Lehigh board, Lehigh sent out some waitlist offers via texts this week.

I’m wondering bout Boston University. Waitlist email said it was a “short and unranked” list? Do you think there’s any chance? Last year I see 3 people came off so I’m not feeling hopeful.

3 probably came off AND enrolled. My guess is several more came off.

The BU CDS says 34 students on the waitlist received an offer in Fall 2023.

Well 34 isn’t very hopeful. Do we think this year will be more?

Wondering when we will see some movement from BU?

Other than Cornell, will the ivies wait until Mid may?
