Waitlists -- Will this year be different?

I agree with this. My twins submitted roughly 15-16 applications each (if you count each Univ of California school separately), so I suppose we too are part of the problem. One of my sons had a good friend who submitted 40+ applications (and I believe he got into 30+ of them). My hope is that the UC’s will pull a lot from the WL’s, since my boys are WL at a bunch of them. In the meantime, committing to oos schools that are far more expensive. Yikes.

I should have added that the FAFSA issues have probably exacerbated things. People that might have rejected an admittance because they knew it would be unaffordable because they got the FA package in Feb/March (EA applicants) might have held onto the admittance until much later in the cycle.

Other than UVA pulling 57 three weeks ago, I have not seen evidence of any school pulling early compared to the last 3 cycles(HS classes 21-23). Vanderbilt Duke and ivies often have some pulls the week before May1 . UChic starts quietly pulling every year right after they send the RD WL , and are often more actively moving by May1 if that initial reach out did not fill the class. UCLA had already had at least one wave of pulls by this time last yr and there were multiple more waves. VT didnt happen to pull many last yr but in typical years the WL moves 2-3 weeks before may 1.
Wake seems same as prior yrs.
From what has been posted , I do not see much difference so far.

So it does seem different? There is a tiktok account of a counselor who says he’s seen Dartmouth pulling from their list. Otherwise, no other postings from any ivy.

No . It does not seem significantly different . Not all ivies typically pull before may 1, but some do some yrs and some dont. There seems to be some cornell movement and Dartmouth. Some ivies having some movement is pretty typical. There has been Duke movement, and the many of the other schools I just mentioned. All of that is very consistent with the averages the past 3 cycles(some of these schools “normal” range is 0-150). I have not seen any information that indicates WL movement is significantly more or less than the average of the past 3 yrs, when looking at a broad selection of the T50s

I agree. While there may be differences with individual schools, I don’t see any significant deviation from past years when looking at the big picture.

Actually, it’s a bit surprising to see any movement at all from Dartmouth considering they’ve had so many years with no pulls at all. Thoughts on when Brown will move? Also - and you might not know this - if they call and the kid misses the call, is that it? It seems that they’re calling during school hours! Do you think they’ll follow up with an email?

As others have said, one school pulling earlier than last year means nothing. Only Brown admissions would know on Brown. When WL calls or emails happen, you have time to call or email them back and discuss the option /offer. Missing the call is understandable, just call them back(and leave a voicemail) when you get the message.

Do most schools call, text, email and/or update the status portal?

Saw posts about a few Nescacs calling from their lists. Lots of movement!

Heard from someone who got into a NESCAC that you have 2 days to decide. All the highly selective schools need to move quickly.

Yes, my daughter was offered a spot off a waitlist at a NESCAC school last year, and she had 48 hours to decide (she turned it down, since she had already committed elsewhere and was excited to attend by that point). She also got a voicemail from a different NESCAC school where she was on the waitlist, and though she called back and left a message, they never called her again. I guess they found someone else to take the spot, but it didn’t leave the best impression.

Curious which was the 2nd school?

Probably the late commit deadlines are causing this. My guess is that the movement this year will be scattered over a larger time span (perhaps even deep into the summer).

@WashU emailed my son and copied us in.

Just some context
My D21 got off the Vanderbilt waitlist on 5/3. My S24 got off the Vanderbilt waitlist 5/2 and Northwestern 5/3.
Vanderbilt sent an email and NU sent an email to set up a phone call.

The answer is yes. In fact, some schools (Denison comes to mind) tell WL students what their merit would be if accepted. Imho, that’s brilliant because it allows the WL student to determine whether they’d be interested in attending at that price. This is in contrast to students who accept a WL position only to find out when accepted that the school didn’t offer enough merit to make it competitive with schools which had given acceptances.

It is not early. Many schools are poised to move on May 1. Typically, they are more effective the earlier they can get started. Remember, their goal is to have their class completed asap.

Years ago, DS got 2 offers by phone by May 3 from NESCAC schools. Both gave 2 days to make a decision.

South Carolina started pulling hard within a week of notifications of regular decision. We know of at least 20 kids who have gotten off the waitlist in our area. Virginia Tech is also pulling a lot off the waitlist and has been for the last three weeks. We’ve seen six Auburns and six Clemsons as well.
