Laundry! Machines in my apartment building.
Getting ready for the incredible heat coming our way. Feels like temperatures up to 110. We’ll be fine since we have a window AC unit in our home office and a heat pump unit in our bedroom. But wow, a lot of people don’t have AC. Our little town is opening a cooling center in the fire station. We had planned to go up to our cabin tomorrow, but we decided not to since it’s so hot.
The good thing about Maine, though, is that by next week, temps will be back to normal. It’s never hot very long. A heat wave is defined as 90 or above for three days, and we haven’t had one in four years. When my son stayed in Austin in the summer of 2010, the temperature hit 100 or above for 40 days in a row!
I don’t want to hear about anyone’s heat wave until you’ve lived through a summer in Arizona.
I’m just glad our three days of warm temps here in Maine will end just as DS/DIL arrive Friday night.
I went to a trade show in Phoenix in July back in the day. We’ve actually been discussing a move to Arizona and I told H we needed to spend some time there in the summer to be sure we could tolerate it as there’s no cabin in Maine in our future!
Sabapup did not want to spend a lot of time outside this morning, so we had an abbreviated walk and then headed to PIlates. Thanks to the cake thread I now want to bake an angel food but don’t want to turn on the oven!
Arizona heat is dry heat. Add high humidity, and 95 degrees in Seattle or Boston will feel worse than 115 in Phoenix, unfortunately.
We here in the Midwest refuse to accept that 100+ degrees is acceptable.
I just returned from a walk in the woods with H. We did not enjoy it! My clothes were soaked, I had to take a shower … but I did it & I’m glad it’s done.
But Arizonans are used to it!! It’s a lifestyle!! ![]()
That -37 to +108 degree range was a primary reason for leaving Chicagoland.
I’m trying to decide when to go to the lake. I have to be there at 4 for mah jongg club. But it so friggin hot and humid, I might just stay home until very shortly before I need to be there!
D1’s weather in CT today is 92 degrees and she said it’s super humid!
Yeah, I’m in CT also, and it sucks. I took the dog on an abbreviated walk in a different woods than I usually go to. He had fun – chased some deer, got to swim. Walking into our air conditioned house felt like walking into an ice chest.
Its almost 8 pm and its 85 degrees out where I am!
It’s 90 here right now … at 8:00, in the Midwest! Yuck.
H is currently relocating a HUGE groundhog from our back garden to a field far away. The big dude was quite content to just hang out crushing our flowers, but the food in the live trap got his attention.
91 still by me. BLEH!
I walked with a friend early this morning but we did some laps on the beach. Helps that the lake water is still cold.
Did some housework but mostly hav been just watching soccer.
I ran the AC for a few hours yesterday and today but despite 90 degree temps, cross-ventilations and a slight breeze during my walk have made it bearable.
It’s a balmy 81 degrees at 7: 30 here in a city known for cold weather ( and usually wonderful summers). Supposed to be 89 and humid tomorrow, yuck.
Last night was the final night of the grand dog’s sleepover so I changed and washed the sheets ( yes he sleeps with me when he’s here). It stormed this morning which freaked him out and he kept barking. I skipped yoga to stay with him. After it cleared up we walked a few miles in the neighborhood. The weather was less obnoxious than yesterday.
I did some trimming of bushes and plants in the yard, mostly stayed inside and worked on my puzzle and finished a book.
Dropped dog off at D and SIL’s , dashed to the library ( made it with 5 minutes till closing time) and did a dance class on zoom.
I used to be so against a dog sleeping in a human bed. But it was such a comfort to our second dog sometimes! And grandpup sleeps with her parents so when she stays she and I bunk up! She is a GREAT sleeper - much less disturbing than my H!
Sorry, dry does not mean bearable, just means it’s a convention oven. Throw rain onto the frying pan (monsoon season) and that humidity beats Boston any day. I endured AZ summers for 22 years, never acclimated and don’t know anyone who has. We all just hibernate in the summer the way those in cold climates do in the winter. I lived ten years in Boston; I’ll take the seasons.
The weather person I use says that if we think today was hot, tomorrow will be hotter. It was the humidity…and the air wasn’t moving at.all. I spent from 2-9 down at my lake. It was nice, but hot. It’s almost 10:00 here, and it’s still about 80…and humid.
It’s supposed to be very nice here next week.
I’m with @ChoatieMom about 100 degree temps in AZ. We were there in March this year and they were having unseasonably record breaking hot weather. It was over 100 degrees the whole ten days we were there. Well…except wisely, we spent three days in Flagstaff area where it was 20 degrees cooler…and lovely. Dry heat is still HOT.
We all receive temperature (high or low) differently. And our situations are different. Health plays a role. Availability of AC plays a role. Not being accustomed to 95 or -5 plays a role.
It was 112 on my car dashboard this afternoon - in Ohio, not the Southwest. I am entirely comfortable (or uncomfortable) claiming “HOT”.
