What are you doing today?

It’s almost 11pm here and it is 81F.

Well, I trimmed fat & cut up some pork shoulder into 2” cubes and froze them in 2# portions so I can easily use to prepare stews. Also used the full water jugs that we had stored for power outage to water the papaya plant. Also got the house ready for the electronic vacuum cleaner. Next, messaged painter, asking him and his carpenter to come and help figure out cost of repairing windows & screens. Let neighbors know that they are coming by.

Then, we went to library for my Digital Navigator Lesson. It went OK–she’s nice but basically was searching online for answers as I asked her things she didn’t know. I was able to gift her the styrofoam cooler & ice packs that my medication came in (her boyfriend fishes and she thinks it could be handy if he caught anything).

Went to PT and also made an appointment for D to go to PT while she’s in town – D texted us that she’s arriving for a visit this Saturday! Yay for happy surprises. After PT, we stopped and had linner at a nice Korean place H likes.

When we got home, searched and found the spreadsheet that shows what a payment was for—some insurance premiums on rental property. The CPA wants the invoices, so I sent email to the insurance agent asking for the invoices (my filing system is totally dysfunctional). Hey, found the invoices & sent them to both the CPA & insurance agent.

Also called only window manufacturer in our state. They said that if we ordered replacement windows in mid-July, we MAY be able to install them in Nov/Dec (I suspect later). I told H it’s better for us to just repair the windows (they are all still functional) and get the painting done and be done with all of it! He agrees; no point in having them paint during rainy season when we can paint now, when painter is ready, willing and able (and it’s nice & sunny). I pointed out that the painter may retire sooner than later, as he’s no young kid.

Meanwhile, I’m staying inside A/C and keeping hydrated. No point in getting ill or stressing body unnecessarily!

1:43 am here in suburban DC and it’s 79. Was 84 at 11 pm. We are going camping starting tomorrow and I dread it. It will be in the upper 90s each day. Also not happy about H leaving all the prep to me.

My 3rd term as president of our synagogue ended yesterday and I just want to revel a bit at not volunteering 50 hrs/wk any more (now it will be 20-25). We are making a permanent loan of a Torah scroll to a congregation in Germany and DH and I are taking it there en route to Ukraine. Need an odd-sized box to pack it. A couple people suggested a box for shipping golf clubs; none of the usual shipping companies had anything close. I called one of the golf store chains, went to the store and they gave me a 12x16x48 golf bag box for free. So much better than the 18x18x48 box I had! Offered to pay for it, but they said they’d just recycle it otherwise, so was happy to help. Managed to tetris it into the Prius with the dog crate.

Did laundry, did synagogue work, watered plants, prepped camping gear (I have a two page inventory list), made some calls, unloaded and loaded the dishwasher. Took our dog for chemo, but her WBC count was too low, so it’s postponed til next week.

Am not sleeping much.

I’m sure it’s bittersweet for your stint as synagogue president ending as I recall that you’ve sold your building so it’s been eventful

I’m not sure how you are getting the Torah to Germany, which sounds pretty cool, but they make travel bags for golf clubs also. Not sure if the synagogue would pay but if it fits in a box, there’s hard or soft sided luggage with wheels. Can be checked luggage.

Not sure if that’s at all helpful. Have a great time camping.

As I mentioned, we were planning on driving up to our cabin today, but it’s so hot we decided to cancel our plans. We have a lot of work to do, anyway. I think we’ll try to do a few fun things the next few days.

Two days ago, DH was driving on a one-way street in Portland when a car came out of a side street and hit the driver’s side of our car. The side street was at a funny angle, not 90 degrees, so it wasn’t a T-bone, but the driver came along side our car and damaged almost the entire side. Our car is drivable IF you don’t consider not being able to open the driver’s door a problem.

We need a rent car. The other driver’s insurer, GEICO, won’t pay for one until they determine liability. They reached out to the other driver (who admitted to DH that the accident was 100% his fault) several times, but he hasn’t responded. I called our insurer, State Farm, and they said if we file a claim with them, we can get a car paid for but we’d have to pay the $500 deductible and hope to get it reimbursed after a few months.

It takes SO long to get an autobody repair appointment up here, I don’t see how any company would give us a car for the length of time we’d need it. We have only one vehicle, so this is an issue! What do people do whose cars are truly undrivable after an accident?

After dealing with DH’s accident in a rental car in Poland last year, I really don’t feel like hassling with this. But DH is clueless when it comes to navigating issues like this, so it will be faster for me to do everything rather than answer his questions every FIVE SECONDS (I tried to have him do it yesterday, ha).

The same thing happened to me - a driver for some reason decided to make a left hand turn directly into the driver’s side of my car. Crushed both doors, definitely wasn’t driveable. It doesn’t sound like yours is driveable either! Driver of other vehicle wouldn’t respond to our insurer (State Farm) and we were ready to go ahead with repairs and then he finally admitted liability to Allstate, his insurer. When I worked as a litigation paralegal, our firm represented State Farm and they take no prisoners. You’ll get your money back.

Got out and did more weeding/trimming. It’s really uncomfortable out there and that’s with knowing it’s WORSE elsewhere. Skipped a planned walk at the lake.

I think my laptop might have a virus. I shut it down and SIL is coming over tomorrow morning to look at it. If he can’t help, I will take it to a place nearby which has great reviews ( and a friend here highly recommends). Sigh…

Strength class and Mahjong this afternoon.

Stay cool, everyone!

Watered the pots and garden, took a walk with a friend before it got any hotter, stopped for ice tea at a new bakery, caught up on phone calls, and about to do my stretches and then puzzles. More soccer this afternoon!

Up at the usual time. Normally it’s my sleep in day, but we are heading out of town, so I wanted to get in 1 more workout. I haven’t done 4 days in a row since the heart thing, so I kept it inside and just did the stairmonster for an hour before lifting. No need to kill my self outside in the muck. And now I have 3 days off

Then I dyed my hair and packed and did a light vacuuming/swifting. Then tried to lay down for a nap. I can’t sleep in the car, since I have to either drive or direct/pay attention for H - otherwise I might wake up in Texas or wind up dead in a ditch. I don’t think I fell asleep, but I relaxed for an hour.

We are headed out shortly to Ohio. Not the grandest of destinations, per se, but I’m excited. It will be a hair (5*) cooler there. Still in the inner circle of hell, but I won’t be sitting on Satan’s lap. I am a little worried for the cats. We normally keep our house at 79 which is tolerable with the fans on. But I can’t leave the fans on while we are gone. I put it down to 78, but I’m afraid to go much lower. It runs almost 24-7 at 79. It only runs intermittently in the wee hours of the morning. I don’t want it to die while we are gone either. I am glad I had it serviced earlier.

So frustrating and baffling, isn’t it?

I sent GEIGO another message this morning, stating my annoyance. I actually got a call from them not long afterwards. They’d reached the other driver, who admitted being 100% at fault. So we’ll get a rental car this afternoon and our car will be towed to an autobody shop tomorrow morning. The last time we needed car repairs, it took more than 4 months for the shop to even start on our car, so we will have the rental for awhile. I insisted on an SUV because we have to be able to fit our dogs in the back. It’s expensive to rent a car in Main in July! I’m just happy Enterprise had a vehicle for us. I think it’s time for a road trip! :joy:

Hey, Ohio DOES have some things to offer! :). What part of the state? We are looking at breaking a record of 98 today.

I did a big grocery shopping this morning and realized that I need to stop doing that. We have no more room in the freezer because whenever I see meat on sale, I buy it.

I’ll be dropping books off at our two local libraries shortly. And I’ll water my plants. Not much else going on because it’s too damn hot.

I just completed my major task of the day, replacing the air, water, and produce keeper filters in our refrigerator. I already had bought all the replacements since I am in tune with the six month schedule.

Otherwise same old same old. Enjoy the 70 something sunshine and maybe get in the pool? Still very cautious with the sprained ankle. And continue the miniature house construction.

It is unseasonably cool here this week. Worried about so many people across the county with insufficient ability to cool their homes. And those required to be outside for work.
Son is in Baltimore for the next few days, scheduled to play two outdoor symphony concerts tomorrow and Saturday evenings. He is truly hoping the concerts are canceled. Not safe for the audience, nor the musicians and their instruments. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Eating Breyer’s strawberry ice cream–$4.00 for what used to be a half-gallon. I don’t need fancy ice cream!

I went back to my favorite gym class today after three weeks off. I was happy to see that I haven’t lost much strength. Even more so it felt so good to connect with my gym friends. I’ve been going long enough that I have a good number of mainly women who I enjoy talking and exercising with.
Walked to Whole Foods after to pick up fruit for my granddaughter who is coming tomorrow. Since I was walking I limited myself to just one pint of ice cream. They were doing a big restock of the ice cream section. The 50% off sales is still going on.
This afternoon I need to organize my house before my daughter and her family arrive tomorrow.

There’s a reason I pushed for 10 years to get us here. And was delighted when after getting outbid on several houses, this last chance opportunity came up. Husband relented on the fact it had a pool. Yes, increased costs, but it’s delightful. And San Diego is living up to its weather reputation for a change,

I keep saying if anyone will be in the area, message me!

We drove to the Enterprise location in Portland. The very helpful employee said that GEICO had authorized only an economy car. Grr. GEICO had said they approved an SUV. I won’t bore you with the details, but it took awhile to get it straightened out. I try to be pleasant and friendly when I talk to people, but occasionally I have to pretend I’m a male GC and speak very firmly.

At one point, when the person I needed to speak to wasn’t available, we drove to a nice restaurant on the water (literally on the water - it used to be a ferry) and had snacks and alcohol. After we finished, we were able to pick up the rental. It’s a Grand Cherokee, very nice. The Enterprise employee was surprised that GEICO had increased the approved cost per day as much as they did.

We visited the Ohio State Reformatory - most notably the prison used in the Shawshank Redemption. We spent 4 hours there. The history was fascinating, as were all of the movie props and memorabilia. Then we ate in some diner that was in an old railroad car. Now we are relaxing in the dark hotel room. I feel like I’ve spent all day at an amusement, moreso that when we did a month ago! Must be the heat.
