What are you doing today?

Today is my holiday day off of work and I had grand plans. My H and S are working the beer tent at a Savannah Banana game today and tomorrow, so I am home alone.

It is too hot and stormy to detail the car like I wanted to today, and I also didn’t take the walk I wanted to today. I did get gas in the car, got few groceries and finally got a hair cut. I haven’t done that for 6 months and it feels good.

I also watched a Hallmark Christmas in July movie and should turn the Cubs off because they aren’t doing so well.

Maybe I can detail the car and take the walk tomorrow.

LOL–I would’ve gone to work the beer tent!

I went down to the lake for about three hours…but came home because it was just too hot to be outdoors.

Got gas in my car, did a target run, had a short piano lesson. Getting ready to go to Friday evening dance party.

They are getting paid well for it and can watch the last bits of it, including the fireworks afterwards for free. It is baseball in a football stadium this weekend.

Went to the gym this morning – it was the most crowded I’ve ever seen it, and I’ve been a member for 20 years! Everyone had the day off, tomorrow the gym has reduced hours for the 4th, and it was about 101 outside today. So, everyone was at the gym.

The dog and I went for a very brief walk in the woods. I was dripping sweat and he was panting a lot, so we cut it short. He did have fun – because it’s So Damn Hot, no one was in the woods – so he found some deer to terrorize and chased them for a while.

I made a new recipe (for pork loin, which I hardly ever make), and we didn’t hate it.

Only one more day of this horrible heat. It’s supposed to be only 83 on Sunday.

Last night I whipped up some Swedish pancake batter so we started the 4th with lingonberry pancakes. Then I got a Facebook popup for 25% off my favorite coffee beans from Seattle so I ordered a five pound bag. Next I prepped my semiannual spreadsheet of assets (husband likes this twice a year) and no longer felt guilty about the coffee order.

Quiet day at home. We may drive a few blocks away for a high vantage point of the Big Bay Boom over San Diego Bay. Husband goes every year but I skipped the last couple of years. It’s a great view but the individual fireworks themselves are mainly impressive because of the bay and four barges, not the actual fireworks themselves.

My Facebook memories are full of previous shows we’ve attended over the years and we’ve seen some great ones. A favorite was Boston - son had toured MIT and we were staying in Cambridge and able to walk to the water. We also walked part of the Freedom Trail earlier in the day. So I will wait and see what the marine layer does this evening before making the call. Apparently the California Coastal Commission is making them leave out one chemical - the one that makes bright blues and reds. I also read they’re not doing hearts or smiley faces. The way things go, it might be the last year they can do fireworks. It would be fun to see if we can spot the three Carnival cruise ships that will be anchored outside the bay - they’re a sponsor of the fireworks so rerouted three cruises to stop by. They’re not coming into port; just anchoring out there.

We are picking up D at airport. She’ll be here for an impromptu nearly 3 week stay! We have to dust her room & launder her sheets to minimize allergy attacks.

Planning to head to farmer’s market soon to pick up some goodies.

Just got back from visiting my old house. Sniff. The owner invited us in. When I last saw it in 2017, it was completely different. And this owner gutted it since then. Only the fireplace is the same. I love it. So much nicer than it falling into disrepair. But it sort of makes me sad to think that might be the last time I ever see it. No real reason to come back.

On a funnier/happier note… this morning I had planned to hike - before I knew a heat wave would grip the country. I tried to find somewhere to go. I found this place that looked cool on the Internet, but when it drove up, it was this sketchy storefront in the middle of a huge, completely long abandoned shopping district. It so looked like somewhere they would have filmed Backrooms. H took a video to send the kids saying if we didn’t come back out, this is where we last were!

We went inside and it actually was quite cool. It’s called Otherworld. There’s one in Philly as well. H loved it, so I was glad. We spent a couple of hours there.

Not sure what we will do with the rest of the day. We might see a movie.

My daughter and her family are visiting. They are out on a walk and I’m getting ready to go down to the marina area of our town. There will be fireworks at the end of the evening. I thought we were picking up food from one place but my son who is joint us with his family wants to grill hot dogs. They will pick them up and allergy approved buns. Most commercial hot dog and hamburger buns contain sesame. I was going to make guacamole but the avocados I bought at Costco are bad. We do have salsa so that will work.
Only partial sunshine with a fog bank so I hope it clears for the fireworks. It’s a big undertaking to bring everything to our boat and the parking is tough on the 4th. The kids want to go so we will go.

Going back a day, I went to D and SIL’s house for dinner and SIL was able to get the virus removed from my laptop and run a scan. Yay! When I left, I headed to meet friends at the bandshell at the lake to hear the Pops concert. The Pops had a wonderful program including the 1812 Overture, where the audience yelled “boom” everytime a cannon would normally sound. That was fun!

Missed yoga this morning as I didn’t get up until 7:30 (which is the middle of the afternoon for me). Walked up to the independent bookstore, but got there 1/2 hour before they opened. I made the sacrifice and pivoted to a nearby ice cream shop and got a cone to pass the time. Then walked around the really great toy shop and got ideas for the grandkids birthdays this month.
Bought 2 books and walked home.
Going back over to D and SIL’s for dinner again tonight. They are grilling burgers and hot dogs.

Sang the National Anthem at our town ceremony this morning before a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Then went to the lake and had lunch and just enjoyed the nicer weather.

Home now to get ready for dinner. Then we will go back to the lake to hear an Abraham Lincoln actor recite the Gettysburg Address. I’ve seen this before and it’s terrific.

Fireworks are supposed to be at 9…but rain is also forecast for that time…so that remains a question mark.

So glad you mentioned Boston fireworks, @Marilyn. S, D & I saw them on a long ago college visit trip through the Northeast when we toured MIT on a 4th of July. Wonderful memory that I haven’t visited in quite some time :heart_exclamation: Hope you enjoy your local fireworks tonight!

Met my Breakfast Ladies for breakfast – it’s six of us, and we’ve been meeting once a month for around 20 years. We were all there today, which is rare. Among us, one new grandbaby and another one to come on July 13. It’s really nice to watch peoples’ lives as we age, and to watch their kids as they age.

H and I took a five mile walk this morning along the boardwalk to see all the people on the beach for the 4th. We were stalked for our street parking place when we left. We are headed to our friends for barbecue tri tip later this afternoon. We can walk to their house and will be home by 8 pm to grab the trolley to go see the fireworks on the bay. This is the best way to go so we don’t have to drive and sit in traffic to get home.

DS/DIL arrived in time for dinner yesterday after a nine-hour drive up from MD with their dog. They slept in this morning, and we just had coffee and hung out at the cabin all day. We had porch cocktails and charcuterie at 4 followed by our annual lobster fest that ended with ice cream at the opposite end of the lake from the fireworks as no one was interested in dealing with the crowd at the party end. We’re all in bed a bit early as we plan to go out to breakfast in the morning and head down to Ogunquit to wander through Perkins Cove and walk the Marginal Way.

We spent the day on the beach at Assateague where these ponies decided to stroll by. While it was super hot here (90s with heat index over 100) but the beach was surprisingly lovely. There was a nice breeze coming off the water, which was very refreshing today. We were not hot at all. I’m not sure what the temp was b/c there is no cell service there, but it was much cooler down there than up in the parking lot!

After showering we headed to a minor league baseball team. We only went b/c S23 works for the stadium and got us tix. They were having a large fireworks show afterward. Unfortunately, being 20 miles further inland from us, it was even hotter there. 97 with heat index of 110! It was just barely bearable with a breeze, but the breeze was intermittent. There was a threat of severe storms which we did not want to get caught in and since the game was a blowout, we gave up after 5 innings and headed home. The storm went a bit north and never materialized here. Came home and watched the NYC festivities on tv. Will be interesting to see how many people actually stay to watch the delayed DC display.

@deb22, We are taking it with us, and it will be checked baggage. We’ll be there for Shabbat services and will then head out to a train late Saturday afternoon.

Came home from camping early; it was 100+ degrees and humid. Utter misery. I’m finding camping less enjoyable these days. It’s just so much WORK and I don’t sleep well. We drove home through the big storm that was heading to DC this evening. At least the rain cooled things off somewhat.

Driving home. Hopefully it’s be faster than the 8 hours it took to get here, but I’m not counting on it. At least WV is a beautiful state. I just hate the trucks in the mountains on the interstates.

We had a huge rain and windstorm last night around 8:30 and we — and around a thousand of our neighbors – lost power. It finally came on around 6:30 tonight. Thankfully the storm lowered the temperature by about 25 degrees, but boy, did I miss our CAC.

So it was a weird day, since we couldn’t do anything we ordinarily do! We went out to breakfast and read the paper way more thoroughly than usual. My gym was closed – no power! – so I worked out at home, then took the dog for a long walk. In an effort to keep the cell phones charged, I took the long way to our local Home Goods to return something. We’re supposed to get another storm tonight.

It poured rain here last night…but really we had no wind. However the towns next to us have declared a state of emergency. One town is 85% without power…and the second has no power in their main downtown area. Tons of trees and power lines down. And….we also are expecting more rain starting tonight and ending Tuesday.

It’s cooler, but still 90% humidity…

I went down to the lake for a short time. Everything was sodden from the rain. Not very many people there.

I decided to go help out at the artisans guild, wrapping the paintings from the show that just ended. Their AC is being replaced Tuesday, so it was a bit steamy, but I was glad to help out.

Then just a quiet day here…leftovers for dinner.

I’m getting ready to make my shopping list. We have out of town guests coming Thursday to Sunday, and I need to get food for meals…it will be easy things. I hope!
