Husband went there on his own. If it was sunny I definitely would have roughed it out. But it’s very overcast right now with chance of drizzle. Between the flight, long walks at both airports, and hilly walk, even the compression socks couldn’t prevent some swelling. I don’t want to kill my ankles on day one!
We canceled our lunch reservations at the Sky Tower because the fog was likely to block views.
We did have a very nice walk through some charming alleys and bustling Queen Street. It’s a very interesting city and it was great to see the heart of it. And we had a delicious lunch at one of my alternate options, Onslow.
A little brag here… I read a quick news snippet about the Munich Security Council and Merz’ opening speech, so I thought I’d try to listen to his actual speech in German. And I understood a good 85% of the german (and 100% of the english, lol). It was interesting and I learned some things.
Pretty proud of myself - I started learning it on my own 4.5 years ago on Duolingo as a hobby, but obviously have branched out beyond that.
Work is very slow today. It’s Friday. The boss is away. My project submittal which isn’t due until the last week in February is pretty much done. I could have it done in 2 hours.
First day off for the long weekend on my part-time schedule.
Zumba at home and pup walk before annual eye exam. Happily paid $39 to have them use the machine that allows you to NOT be dilated. (Fully worth it to not waste my morning!). Three stops afterwards, all before 10am - grocery for a few items, bakery for some treats and pharmacy to pick up a script.
Came home for breakfast. Walked the dog again cause why not, it’s decent outside! Just a short walk. Then headed to a local bathroom warehouse place to browse a bit (Bathroom thread people, for me). Stopped at an estate sale afterwards that was very busy but I left empty handed.
Came home, made myself a chopped salad. Will do some more bathroom research along with couch research this afternoon. MAYBE one more walk. H had an unplanned root canal the other day - I had taken out a small piece of sirloin steak that day to make fajitas - but he def did not need to chew on that afterwards! So tonight I’m making them regardless or they will have to tossed.
Was going to wash my car (it’s disgusting) but there is going to be a lot of melting going on this weekend so I will wait till Monday when maybe some of the melt/dry occurs so I don’t mess it up right away!!!
No V-Day plans. Besides the fun donuts I bought this morning for breakfast tomorrow.
Did the weekly routine Thursday cleaning. Finished a baby jacket I’ve been casually working on during my weekly stitching gals get-together. It will go into the guest room dresser which is now completely full of baby clothes/blankets/toys for giveaways that seem to happen less frequently these days.
Went grocery shopping for items for tonight’s meal and tomorrow’s Valentine’s dinner. Will enjoy Friday night music and cocktails on the patio with DH, a movie, and then read until I fall asleep.
I went to a town about 45 minutes away to have lunch with a woman who was my client about 25 years ago. We’ve kept loosely in touch via Facebook. Her husband was diagnosed six years ago with Lewy Body Dementia, and she’s had a terrible, terrible time of it. I offered several times to have lunch with her but she never accepted. Well, he died around two months ago; I offered lunch again when she was ready; we did so today. She’s extremely depressed, very lonely, and very alone. She has no sibs and no kids. Her parents are deceased. She really is all alone.
I hope my lunch was a respite for her. She has a long road to hoe before she’s back in the land of the living.
Then I took the dog for a long walk. About to go pick up a pizza – I am not in the mood to make anything for dinner.
I’ve been crocheting since I was a teenager. The booties take a couple of hours, same for the hat. The jacket, if I were to focus would only take me a couple of days. None of these are very difficult, they just keep me busy.
I went to Mahjongg and since it is the second Friday we went to lunch. The lunch was disappointing, and expensive but whatever. on the way there got a call from my doctor’s office that they had to change my appointment for monday and would the following week be okay. NO, I’m on vacation that week and that’s why we ‘set up’ February to be next week (I have to go every month but there is a two week window I have to go within and next week is it). They’ll call me back so I finally got to Mahjongg late and apologized and told them why.
Well, they called during my game and I had to take it, and they played on without me (I was still at the table, the whole call took about 2 minutes) and one person threw the tile I needed for mahjongg but the next person played without waiting for me or asking if I needed the tile. So I asked if it was my turn and I went to take the tile and the person next to me said no, you can’t take that, too late (she was the one who didn’t wait for me). I said fine, I’m done and I left. We only had 3 players today (two tables of 3) and so then they were done too.
I don’t think I’ll go back. I play to have fun, not to be rude to people.
I’ve been making baby things and giving them away for decades. No desire for grandchildren, and our son and DIL don’t seem inclined. If they do, there is an entire dresser full of things they can choose from.
I had a very helpful PT session that eliminated the stabbing pain in my right shoulder. Then I bought some food that I had for breakfast & lunch. Went to the bank, wrote a check and asked that our maturing 6-month CD be rolled over for another 6 months, to get the 3% interest rate (instead of no interest for our nonprofit). Left message with 2 H’s doc about what the PT recommended—having an injection on H’s shoulder to help with his neck/shoulder & trigger finger, before seeing hand specialist.
I was able to make reservations for an upcoming sneak peek of the local community theater offerings and arrange to see it with a friend. She also invited me to hear a lecture about viruses in the news by our former university chancellor, so I registered both of us & H to hear that.
I asked our next door neighbors if they wanted to join us for dinner at nearby Greek restaurant, so we all went out and had a very nice time together. Also tried on the waterproof pants for our Scandanavia trip (that just arrived)–they fit both me and H.
My grandmother taught me to crochet but it’s something I haven’t kept up with. A fun hobby to have!
Yesterday was quiet for me. H was gone all day taking care of some family business and that being concluded has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I went to Pilates and it was great. There were four of us and the class was challenging. I enjoyed doing some exercises I haven’t done in a long time!
Today will be quiet. Debating if we will go out for breakfast or not; debating if we will go out for Chinese food later today; lots of debating. I’ve already taken the girls for their “long” walk.
Trigger finger is my newest medical specialty (I’m attending medical school one ache, disease, or infection at a time). I have this and in the fall it was in my index finger. Got a shot in my palm as you’d think the problem is in the finger but it isn’t, it’s in the ‘pully’ that’s located about an inch below where the finger meets the palm. Immediate relief from the pain. Until about 2 months later and then it moved to middle finger. Figured I’d need the surgery they said was likely. Nope, different finger, different pully, another shot. Again, it feels great only 3 days later but it is unlikely to last and then I’ll need the surgeries (yep, two fingers, two cuts but can be done on the same day) in May.
So I’ve only been a hand specialist for a few days now, but I don’t think an injection in the shoulder will help the trigger finger. I think he should go to the hand specialist. My PCP told me to wear a finger splint before going to the hand specialist and while it did help the pain, the hand specialist said not to wear it as they need the fingers moving.
Beautiful day here, so I decided to take a walk while DH was spending the morning having coffee with his buddies. No need to go anywhere today, so I think I’ll just read and crochet a bit before joining DH in the kitchen later to prepare our Valentine’s dinner of grilled seabass and steamed artichokes. We’ll probably pick a comedy or romantic movie to watch after. Simple day, simple celebration.
Romantic day here… got up at 5am. Ran 6 miles near the gym. Did 30 min on the stairmonster and then a little legs and abs and mobility work. Ate a junk filled breakfast, played piano while H worked out, then vacuumed most of the house. Then ate from a buffet at a hole in the wall Chinese place - buffet just reopened last week since Covid! And is owned by the family of 2 of H’s favorite former students. Then a nap, finished up by taxes, but will wait to file until next weekend in case something else pops up. Soon we should go to the big city - maybe to Costco if we get there before closing which is looking doubtful - it’s an hour away and I think H is napping. Then dinner at a little cheap sport bar that hopefully won’t be crowded tonight and then probably stream a movie.
Maybe not so romantic. H got me a box of chocolate from target. I told him earlier I didn’t get him anything. Helping him every day (like with that stupid fed ex box) is my gift!
I went with a friend to a coffee cupping at our local library. I’d never heard of this before, but love coffee so I decided to go. A coffee cupping is like a wine tasting. The presenter discussed the history of coffee, the growing of coffee, and evaluating different coffees based on flavor, body, smell, etc. We did a blind tasting of three different coffees and we then evaluated them. For each coffee, you’d place a different colored dot on the characteristics you thought were present in the coffee. It was a very good visual because it was easy to see the pattern. In this instance, the majority of the 20 people there had very similar judgments about the three different coffees (there were very few outliers).
From the questions folks asked during the presentation and afterwards, it was also clear there were some very serious coffee people in attendance. I really enjoyed the event, which was sponsored by my local library. This free lecture series was funded by a trust established in 1891 to provide public lectures and programs for town residents. Most of the programs are really interesting. There have been authors, artists, musicians, business leaders, Native American dancers, etc.
