What are you doing today?

Finished up a trip to NC visiting our D. Went to a raptor center this morning and did a hike at a park.

Headed to a short Ash Wednesday service (and possibly lunch afterward). Tis nice to do things that were not possible before retirement.

Sidebar: In my childhood, only my Catholic friends had ashes - but there were a lot of them in NY… almost my whole class were bused off to CCD on Wed afternoons. I had the impression back then that they were in the religious majority. My current church (Presbyterian) has started to do them too, and I should have posted this in Memories because it makes me think back to those elementary school times.

@momofboiler1 – I’ve been to that raptor center! S1 and his family live near Charlotte, and we’ve gone there several times.

Wondering when we will ever have clean(ish) water again - I have not fully trusted our water since the coal ash spill about 10 years ago. Yesterday evening, almost everyone was out of water. Several of my co-workers were out when they got home. We were OK at dinner, but then started losing pressure as we cleaned up. H said upstairs was out at bedtime. We didn’t dare use the one good flush per toilet until this morning. Fortunately, it seems better for our house today, but many people are still out even now! And it’s not like you can go down the street to restaurants/gas because most are closed or have their bathrooms closed!

And we only get an update every 12-18 hours which basically says we are working on it. Boil Water Notice is in effect until at least Friday - they said that earlier this morning, but then edited it to say “until further notice.” Everywhere is completely out of bottled water.

I do not believe that the 1” rain storm over 24 hours caused this mess alone. It wasn’t even hard enough to wash the sand off the steep side streets. And if it rained harder upstream, why are we the only community affected? Not the towns 30 min upstream/downstream. And it’s supposed to rain again tonight/tomorrow and Sunday. Is that going to screw it up more? Ugh! I’m glad we are going out of town this weekend! I can deal with boiling water - but I really need toilets that flush consistently…

In better news, I found $1 on my run this morning. It’s been awhile since i found cash.

Back from Florida last evening so my first order of business this morning was laundry. I also had to update my checkbook (it’s actually an excel spreadsheet)for the payments/deposits when I was gone. And I had to review and provide information for a yearly lease. Tracked down/uploaded a few more documents for my tax preparer. Oh and I took a phone call from my sister, a call about an upcoming community meeting from my neighbor and called the car dealer about a minor (I hope!) issue.
Went to the grocery store. Had a dental appointment. Dealt with a Comcast issue.
I’m tired. I think I will sit down and read with Olympics on in the background before I fix dinner.

In addition to preparing and filing my taxes ( ), I went to the gym and did sides/obliques, and did my 30-minute cardio on the treadmill. Pork chop for dinner.

DH went to take a nap at around 2:30 – he’s still asleep (it’s now 4:53.) He’s been sleeping terribly at night, so I guess I’ll leave him alone.

Well, today, started the morning talking with Chase and trying to clarify that they fixed H’s name on his credit card. They had firstname k firstname as his name instead of firstname k lastname. We sent in paperwork to fix it but they rejected it as incomplete, so we RE-SENT paperwork and wrote a cover letter explaining that there is NO name change because the name on the card was wrong and always wrong from CHASE! We also included documents showing the correct name and the correct SSN. It has taken several weeks — significantly longer than it should have.

We were able to consolidate H’s CORRECTED accounts to move all his points to ONE card and then transfer those points from his account to my account, and then close his card and avoid the $95 annual fee, which would otherwise be due tomorrow.

I also spoke with the body shop to make an appointment to damage from my car (it was hit in parking lot) repaired and Enterprise (where I will rent my car—they have a van pick you up at body shop and bring you to their place). Also spoke with insurer to confirm the details about the car rental, etc. The poor agent was hospitalized at least twice and is trying to dig out from all the work that accumulated in her absence. The agent told me NOT to get CDW because the CDW will NOT be reimbursed by Allstate. The insurer will directly reimburse the body shop what I selected off their list of preferred shops.

It took several phone calls, but we got it done. I also ran a support group meeting at a local medical center and have tried to help H deal with his dizziness and LOW blood pressure. He’s mostly stayed in bed to rest. I had PT and soon we will leave with a friend for dinner and a lecture on viruses at local Thai restaurant.

Oh yeah, also made an appointment with POTS cardiologist and confirmed an appointment with CA lung doc.

This morning was our tour of Wellington. Started with the cable car up to the Botanical Gardens, then walked down and finished with the Rose Garden. On to the Beehive and Parliament, where we all jumped out only for a photo op, no touring. Then along the harbor front and up Mt Victoria, where we had 15 minutes for photos and trying not to get blown off! (We learned it’s called Windy Wellington for a reason.) Finished at the Te Papa Museum. Our guide is from Wellington so although she does point our sightseeing highlights, she gives a LOT of personal family anecdotes. Rest of the day is free time. The tours are somewhat whirlwind.

I have FedEx packages delivered to the local FedEx/Office store. If one is nearby, you can redirect once the package is en route. Have done this for jewelry that was coming from overseas and then via FedEx domestically. No extra charge, unlike UPS!

Busy day here. Meeting at 10. Visit with a friend from 12-2:30. Ballroom dance lesson at 3. Meeting in town about school facility reductions at 6. Busy day!

Beats yesterday when I had oral surgery instead of a deep cleaning of one tooth. And I feel good this morning. Yay. When the novocaine wore off, it was the spots where it was injected that hurt, and yes, I did take the prescription strength ibuprofen long before it wore off. But the second dose…I took ibuprofen and Tylenol, and that made all the difference!

Re-entry chores. Bleh!

Today I am being grateful that Sabadog is still here. I had my watercolor class yesterday morning and she seemed fine when I got home. By the afternoon, however, she was not feeling great. H called the vet and we scheduled her last appointment for this morning. However, she must have sensed a disturbance in the force and sprang to life, ate her dinner, had her meds, did her usual bedtime activities and this morning she was no worse for wear so we cancelled the appointment. She is 12.5 years old with chronic hepatitis, so I’m well aware her time is limited but I’m just glad it didn’t come to an end today.
H and I had a great call with a financial planner this morning and scheduled a follow up appointment with him in a few weeks. As I complained on another thread, I wasn’t happy with my current advisor but didn’t want to manage my own accounts as there are a few complicating factors that would make it tricky. I know just enough to make some terrible mistakes, I’m sure!
H and I went to Costco and the grocery. We ran into some folks from the neighborhood and heard about their new grandbaby. Watched some Olympic hockey which I won’t spoil for people who don’t want to know the outcome!

Another beautiful day, so DH and I walked up to the club restaurant and had lunch overlooking the golf course. Took the long way back home. Made chicken lettuce wraps for dinner.

This morning we flew from Wellington to Christchurch; luckily had great views of the west coast of the South Island. The city is charming; we took the tram hop on hop off and hopped off at the great Botanical Garden. The dahlias and roses were particularly impressive. Also saw punting on the Avon.

Finished blocking the lapghan I completed earlier this week:

And finally finished the slouchy “boyfriend” sweater I’ve been working on sporadically out of yarn I used for DH’s napping blanket:

That completes all my works-in-progress. Now I need to find something small and easy (another baby blanket?) to work on with the gals during our weekly Wednesday coffee sessions.

Or you could make me a sweater like that! I love that! Only kidding, of course. I really need to knit or crochet again myself.

Today…I drove home in the snow. We got about two inches, but it’s cold and sloppy. Dance party tonight is postponed to tomorrow (can’t go).

Glad to be inside. The weather folks say there could be snow Sunday into Monday!

Sitting in a car on the way toward Atlanta. We have about 3 hours to go. For the most part it is going ok except hitting charlotte during rush hour traffic.

Tomorrow is FDIL1’s shower. Younger S/FDIL2 are also hopefully coming. Their late night flight just got delayed 1:30. I hope they make it! Especially since we also brought younger S’ bday things.

We (our community) should hopefully have clean water when we get back. It passed the first test and should get the results back tomorrow.

Coffee, puzzles, banana, Canada v. Finland hockey. A trip to the Y, then down to the mall to pick up some Nespresso pods from the boutique there.

I broke a wine glass at the weekend, so I stepped into Crate & Barrel to see what a single one would cost. Well, it costs more than what it costs at HomeGoods for 4, which is where I bought them to begin with. Reader, I did not buy one.

The fine salesman at Nespresso convinced me to buy a few more sleeves, so I ended up with 3 free sleeves instead of the 2 I was anticipating.
