Working at home until about 1 pm then I need to get my car washed and run to Target. Have to take D2 to the airport later to head to CT to visit D1.
My SIL that we thought had shingles yesterday does not have them. The rash continued to progress on his face (I guess this is not what shingles does) and he ended up on a telehealth call late yesterday and the doctor said it was an allergic reaction. SIL had been pulling vines off the trees on their property (vines were killing trees) and the doctor thinks these vines are what caused the reaction. He got some different medication late yesterday and D1 said the swelling on his face has gone down so much today. SIL is still being careful around GD just in case.
DH has coffee several mornings a week with five of his buddies. We are having them and their wives over tomorrow for a taco-bar-and-margaritas party (at least DH asked this time), so today was food shopping. I’ll do all the prep and cleaning today, but this will be an easy one as DH farmed out the appetizers, chips/salsa/pico/guac, and dessert to his friends. All I have to do is season some browned beef, set out the fixings, and serve myself an early margarita to prepare for the onslaught of people (I’ve never met two of the wives).
Back to the Y - 3 miles on the treadmill at a decent clip then weight machines.
Then off to Costco to pick up the new MacNeo. I had it set up in about 10 minutes. It uses a standard USB-C cord and plug! One less charger to keep around. I don’t know if we’ll be able to get anything off of the old HP windows laptop; hoping at least the old photos are on a separate hard drive.
Now onto taxes. Yay. Not. I doubt they’ll take more than a couple of hours, but it’s the thought that just does me in.
It’s been a good day but the best part is that now when it’s a good weather day, outside time can be enjoyed until nearly 8pm!
Morning ritual of inside exercise and then a nice pup walk. Saw 6 deer in the yard when I was exercising before it was fully light.
Made some yummy generally healthy muffins for breakfast - the NYT Lunchbox Harvest Muffins - wheat flour, little sugar, apples, raisins, carrots, walnuts, and pumpkin.
Went to get some labs done for an annual endocrinologist appt next week - but I guess they didn’t order any! Will call Monday to make sure I don’t need them.
Stopped at Lowe’s to check out bathroom vanities. Ehhhh.
Stopped at a thrift store - a guilty browsing pleasure. Omg some steals! Some for my H to sell in his EBay store - makes him so happy when I contribute this way and fulfills my thrill of deal hunting, lol. Men’s Lands End parka, nearly new, $2! 4 set of Pfaltzgraff vintage mugs in perfect condition, $2. A Ralph Lauren small zippered wallet, like new, $3. Much more.
Some things for me to try on later - will sell if I don’t like them. Like new Lands End thick cordoroy pants - a pretty rusty brown, a pair of vintage Woolrich pointe black pants, a European brand skort in a pretty paisley print….all three were 75% off - no more than $1 each.
Stop at the market for some fruits/veggies and meat to grill tonight. Came home and did a spring cleaning of the front porch furniture and pots - looking spic and span! Sat in the sun and read some. Shared a mini Haagen Dazs bar with the dog - don’t worry he didn’t get any chocolate.
Will grill some burgers and brat burgers. Sit outside and read some more. Pick up some more sticks in the yard. Can’t do yard clean up yet - weather isn’t consistent enough - I don’t want to disturb the !!!
Started the day by weighing in, first time in a couple of weeks, and learned I lost three pounds since I weighed in after our trip, when I was down one. I’ve been filling up quickly when eating so know I’ve been eating less volume.
Then washed my hair, took niece’s lemons/baby rings package to the post office, and headed down to Cabrillo National Monument for a nice walk and stunning views, as always. There were two military vessels heading out; don’t know if they are just doing training or sailing off to the Middle East like numerous other navy ships that home port here.
Looked for fun flower pots at several stores (unsuccessfully), worked at synagogue all afternoon on various items (didn’t finish all of them due to an incessantly chatty congregant who is coordinating with me on the many boxes of books we are hauling out on Sunday), watered a bunch of plants, sanded the side of a counter where I will be reapplying the formica, folded two loads of laundry while watching March Madness, picked up H’s shirts from the cleaners, did Zoom Shabbat services.
Should I write on this thread what I’m going to do today? Or should I wait until evening and write what I actually did?? They might be different things.
Today, I’m going to skip a funeral and volunteer at a food organization for Veterans. It’s called Cook for Vets and it is like a Meals on Wheels for Vets.
The man who died was also a vet. I do need to write a nice note to the widow.
And, I need to bake some bread as gifts for neighbors who watch my house when I travel.
I am going to finish installing laminate flooring in basement with DH. First need to remove special Pergo saw blade, do some measuring and scribing, take planks over to neighbor’s house install our blade and use his table saw. The last planks to install are the hardest since you need to rip them lengthwise, and use a pull bar to seat the properly. Then need to measure for trim, move furniture around to reorganize storage space (thank you, DS, who is coming over to help with this). Will spend a little time with one DGD-4yrs, and may make a trip to Home Depot to order trim and another handrail for basement stairs.
I am so glad that we are tackling this project NOW, and not waiting until we are even older, stiffer, sorer!
Because the title says “doing” today I’ve been opting for the plan and not the in-the-rearview-reality.
I feel wiped today after spending yesterday at March Madness. More activity than usual and less water plus some junk food equals a headache and dehydration. I’ll work out at 11 but spend the rest of the day vegging in front of TV watching games. Because tomorrow back for more March Madness! But that’ll only be one game.
We are going to dinner with friends and then community theater to see West Side Story. They always do a fabulous job and we really like these friends so I’m really looking forward to it.
I usually do a mix of what I’ve done and going to do. If I don’t wind up doing something oh well…
So far - I ran a decent run, 30 min stairmonster and mobility/ab work. Then I promptly sat on my butt and ate, read a book and took a short nap. I had done a load of laundry, but as I was getting it out of the dryer I noticed the washer was set to rinse/spin. Crud. Must have gotten bumped when the painter was moving it around. So I had to re-do it.
Then I cleaned a bathroom while H did yard work. Then pizza for lunch. Shower in a min and then we are heading out of town to a used bookstore that also has collectibles. H wants to spend his jury duty $$$. Dinner somewhere. Not sure about that yet.
Tonight is our party. DH blew out the front and back patios so they look good through the windows (ha!) as today’s 104-degree temp precludes opening the doorwall. We go back to normal in a couple of days, but this is the only day all five couples had free. Oh well, the margaritas will be ice cold.
I spent the morning fixing day-of food and laying everything out. Nothing left to do until the hour before the guests arrive, so I’ll take a leisurely shower, give myself a manicure, and read or nap until I have to pretend to be an extrovert. DH does not have to pretend and is like an excited puppy waiting for the party. You’d think people were bringing him treats.
Added to my list … While vegging and hydrating and watching basketball I’m also listening to Luke Combs’ new album.
I miss the days when we listened on actual LPs. And albums were a standard length. This one is 22 songs. The last Morgan Wallen had 37 songs. I get why they do it, but ds2 and I talked about what we liked and didn’t like, and I couldn’t even remember all the songs I’d heard. I was telling him how in the day you put on Tapestry and cleaned your room and there was no hopping around and skipping and rewinding – at least not easily. Even when they were little we’d listen to the Clapton Unplugged CD without skipping songs and clean on Saturday mornings.
And that is my cranky old person complaint of the day.
Well I will amend mine by saying I got 4 books. One comic book in japenese and a children’s book in mandarin (according to the very nice asian kid next to me). Both for my nephew who we will see next month at S/FDIL1’s wedding. And then 2 in French for me and my sister, who will also be at the wedding. All 4 books cost a grand total of $4.
Today is a beautiful day here! We are going to grill a fantastic flank steak and enjoy it with some red wine, vintage and varietal yet to be determined. H was up most of the night and slept most of the morning, so I took care of the dogs and put together a casserole for later in the week. Then we worked on a client profile for a financial planner we are working with to help us with future transitions. It was a good exercise for us.
This weekend was fine for us but others in our state have had houses and cars flooded. Some have lost everything but their lives. Last week’s rains caused extensive statewide power outages. (We had power outages in our home a few times for 1 to 3 hours at a time.). Some places still had power out when this storm hit this weekend. The ground was already saturated and dam was close to reaching its capacity. Many folks were evacuated and some airlifted by helicopter. They had to cut off power to 3 flooded communities Things are a mess there but fortunately to date no reports of deaths of humans
We have stayed put to not add to chaos on roadways. Fortunately public schools are on break so not as much traffic on roads anyway.
I went to a brunch that a wonderful woman I know from the dog park put together for us dog parker-ers. It was great, and I’ve decided the next one will be at my house, in about two months.
Then took an absurdly long nap. I have no idea why.
