What are you doing today?

I loved visiting this bookstore in Porto.

Nah, don’t watch TV. It’s our org’s 20th anniversary and I thought we will give these bags as gifts to our speakers.

it is, but it’s crowded!!

It’s packed but delightful. Glad we got the right ticket so we didn’t have the long line.

Today we celebrated MIL’s 99th birthday. It was a low key day, which is best for her. H & I spent the day with her and SIL & her H came over midafternoon so we could go to dinner. Nephew, his wife & her D joined us. We went to a local restaurant where they tucked us out of the way - it was really nice. MIL had a good day today, so it was a win.

Today we attended the centennial rededication of our synagogue building. We are the second congregation (for 24 years). The congregation that built it in 1926 moved to La Jolla, following their congregants. Although there were proclamations read in the US Senate, House, San Diego mayor’s office and more, the only politician who could actually attend was a county supervisor . But it was a nice ceremony and subsequent cocktail hour on the patio. We passed on the $250/plate annual fund raising dinner that followed.

Well, finally bought the travel medical policy that covers us for a year. It was peace of mind, just in case something comes up & highly advised by my friend (hey, none of us are getting younger).

Also requested wheelchairs for H & me for all segments of our travel—I need to conserve batteries of my med equipment & H tends to have limited stamina.

Also pre-ordered food for our 1st flight—I’m getting lasagna & H is getting chicken. (It was their only offering w/o cheese, so easy choice as lactose isn’t great for him.)

Organizing all our travel docs as well, discarding duplicates.

After a morning where my chief chores was to go out and buy bagels for the family and care for the cats, I spent 2 hours at the attorney’s signing my will, trust revision documents, end of life plan and powers of attorney.

I got to stop for lunch at New Mexican restaurant on my way to the lawyer’s office and get my green chile fix. Brought home a pint of salsa, w/ bag for fresh tortilla chips as requested by D.

Now I get to register my medical documents with the state data base so my end of life wishes and whole body donation are on statewide, official record.

A full day of outside work. Raking up sticks and twigs so H can torch the weeds that have popped up. Then onto weeding. Ick. I did fill up the garbage can, but there is more to do. Tomorrow I’ll try to get below the top layer, rake up the bark/mulch, and then lay down some fabric stuff and cover it with new mulch.

The rhubarb is ready to harvest! I’m going to cut it all, then make rhubarb cordial. If I start now it will be ready for whoever shows up here on July 4th.

Currently sitting on the deck, watching little fish jump in the cove, and drinking a cocktail (gin, St Germain, Cointreau, and lemon juice; an absinthe rinse in the glass). Bliss.

My only excitement today was learning that I have the option of a Shake Shack burger on my Delta flight back from Seattle next Monday. No shake but I do get a brownie. And potato chips in lieu of fries.

My exciting day was 1st H “suggested” I should tab all the papers I am bringing on our trip—a binder clip of papers with our airline reservations, a binder clip of papers with our lodging, a binder clip of papers with O2 and wheelchair arrangements with airlines. a binder clip of our insurance and medical info, so I did that while washing laundry.

Next, as we were leaving to go for a late morning walk, the FedEx delivery guy arrived and had my medical equipment that I was anxiously awaiting (need it for our trip and leaving in 2 days). I took it from the guy & plugged it in to be sure it works, and so far it does!

I also finished boxing up all the medical equipment that we received that we are NOT bringing on this trip—5 machines in 4 boxes, complete with labels from the supplier to ship back to his company. His company has to service at least 3 of them and double-check whether the other two machines need servicing as well. We had to drive out to the FedEx place near the airport because one of the machines has lithium ion batteries. I got a receipt and sent a text to the supplier, telling him the boxes were on the way back to him.

Next, we went to H’s hematology/oncologist APRN. I lucked out & found street metered parking. We had Where you feed the meter—$.25 for 10 minutes (instead of $5 for 1st 2 hours). Had a great visit with the APRN—he was very thorough and cheerful and gave H some thoughts about how to get more information so we could treat his medical issues that the prior oncologist just kept monitoring via blood tests that he didn’t fully share with the new clinic. After that we went out to lunch and I bought takeout for dinner.

Since we’ve been home, I’ve been running the medical equipment continuously, to be sure it doesn’t fail prematurely (the way the prior machine did after in about 20 minutes). I need the equipment to function properly every night while we travel, as I need it to sleep properly and not get ill. So far, it works but it runs hot and is pretty noisy, but what can you say? It will allow me to travel safely!

Spouse and I are discussing what to do for Cinco de Mayo. Both of us are working in-office today. If we decide to eat out, we’ll be going at the peak of what is sure to be a busy night.

I am currently watching my MIL sleep. I guess it’s to be expected after she was awake and active so much the past two days, but it’s a bummer because we leave early tomorrow morning. Hopefully we can wake her up to eat when they bring her lunch to her room - staff said that she refused to leave her room for breakfast & told them to go away. Glad we arrived after her shower, because we have been here when she doesn’t want the shower - she’s not exactly polite to the caregiver. This is how we spend our “vacations” now. At least we can look forward to babysitting GD when we get home.

Took over half an hour through regular security but now hanging at SAN waiting for flight to SEA to visit son for the weekend. Still musing whether to take light rail/monorail for about $3 senior fares or spring for ride share.

We stopped for breakfast on our way home from our visit with MIL - we met up with H’s old friend. They haven’t seen each other in almost 50 years. I had never met him - he’s a great guy.

I am not an envious person. I know plenty of people with more money than I have, nicer houses than mine. There’s always someone who has more, so I don’t care about that stuff. But this man impressed the heck out of me. Air Force Academy grad, fabulously impressive career. I mean, the guy was a negotiator dealing with the Russians on an arms treaty (years ago). And his wife … OMG … while we didn’t meet her, it’s clear from her life story that she is uber-smart. He didn’t brag, just shared information in response to catch-up questions. Let’s just say that I am humbled. I wanted to say, “I’m not worthy,” but he would have been embarrassed.

Mostly typical day. Workout - I am up to 20 minutes running today, with only 1 pit stop break at 13 minutes. It’s feeling more natural. Then finished up with 30 min on the stairmonster and lifted. Then to work… After work, I’ll walk “the loop” with H and have leftover chicken parm for dinner. Then we will finish up with Walmart Wednesday and watch something on TV - looking like it will be Daredevil.

But some good news. Younger S called and said he got a big promotion at work! This time last year, they (federal contractor) were cutting ~30% of the company - over 3-4 layoffs… I am very very happy for him! He’s a good kid.

Strange and hopeful news. At older S’ wedding, I was going to pay for the rooms for us, the minister/spouse, and younger S/FDIL2. Younger S put his on my card where he is still an authorized user. The other 2 rooms were on a different card. Neither card has been charged. Older S asked me if I covered his room, because he wasn’t charged. And then the parents of FDIL2 said they weren’t charged either. This hotel - while very pricey - didn’t seem to be the most organized during the booking process, but now it’s been 1.5 weeks. I’m hoping that someone else paid for all of our rooms? That would be such a nice gesture! And I could really use the $$$ to pay for all my recent med bills (I have a $5K deductible)… But I don’t know at what point I can relax about it. I certainly don’t want to call and ask if it was an oversight!

Edit - my card WAS charged for incidentals… parking and H took something from the minibar. The latter was charged 1-2 days later. But the rooms themselves - nada.

I took some items to goodwill this morning and recycled some electronics.

I’ve been trying to clean some stuff. Went through a few drawers.

I feel like even though I got rid of a bunch, there is still so much stuff!

Walked to mahjong. Won 3 times so it was a good day.

My bil is coming over Friday so that’s the reason to clean. The spare bedroom was a staging zone so it needed to be cleaned.

My husband is playing golf tonight. I made a Dutch baby for dinner. I love breakfast for dinner and my husband does not.

I got out of bed early after, according to my watch, exactly seven hours of sleep so I could exercise early as I had lunch with some neighbor ladies. This is a subset of the mahjong group. Today it was just four of us and so lovely. I am so sad that one of the women and her wife are going back to California. We ate at a place that was new for me, and I didn’t love it. It’s billed as Mediterranean, but they served almost nothing of what I think of as traditional Mediterranean food — tabbouli, baba ghanoush, kebabs, kafta, shwarmas – so I was disappointed and ending up getting a lamb/beef burger! lol

The past few days have felt so full, for me anyway. Yesterday, dh and I talked to ds2 for almost three hours, giving financial advice and solving the world’s problems.

And lots of basketball. Let’s go, Spurs!

Went to yoga this morning but drove as it was in the 40’s and “ felt like” the 30’s. I don’t mind winter but it’s May!

Really didn’t do much after that, finished a library book and started another one. A few cleaning chores.

I’m disappointed because D and I were supposed to do a Mother’s Day cocktail class this evening. A friend and her D were going too.
Except D wasn’t feeling well last night and she turned out to be positive for strep! My friend just texted me some pictures and the event looks great.
