What are you streaming on Netflix these days?

I second “Sherlock”, from BBC Television. Set in modern-day England. It’s great, and Holmes is played as if he is on the autism spectrum. There are also some funny jokes about people thinking Holmes and Watson are a couple (they’re not).

Doctor Who, Firefly, Buffy, Dollhouse, Torchwood, All Creatures Great and Small, Sherlock, Merlin, and right now, Midsomer Murders, which I am thoroughly enjoying. I would love to live in Midsomer, with its charming villages, and beautiful countryside, except that about 5 people are gruesomely murdered every episode.

Recently streaming on Netflix:

The September Issue (documentary about Vogue magazine)

A couple of Ken Burns documentaries: 1) The National Parks, and 2) The War (WWII)

I’m glad you liked Bill Cunningham New York, SouthJerseyChessMom. That’s really been one of my faves from this whole year. I liked it way more than The September Issue, which appeals to a similar audience but got a lot more press attention. Bill Cunningham is weirder, but much more interesting, than Anna Wintour or Grace Coddington.

I second Downton Abbey! I streamed the first season on Netflix this summer and am now HOOKED. I’m so jealous everyone in the UK gets to watch it before I do! Check it out!

D2 and I watched “I Capture the Castle” last week, and just started watching Mad Men.

Found a fun sci fi TV series called Eureka. Thank you netflix! Also just found the documentary, Vanishing Bees about colony collapse - fascinating look at bees and new systemic pesticides - bees as the canary in the cage. Loved Battlestar Galactica to my surprise and delight. I so enjoy marathon sessions of newly found shows on Netflix. I still think Netflix is a gift from the universe!

We all like Sherlock/BBC.

I’d like to get DH interested in Downtown Abbey. Tell me more…

Damages.
The League.

Eureka is on Netflix? How could I have missed this?!

Bones.
How I met your mother.

My parents: Sons of Anarchy.

My husband and son are also enjoying Sherlock Holmes.

We also just watched “Exit through the Giftshop”, the Bensy movie.

Have your husband read this review: [Downton Abbey Season 2 on PBS: Movies + TV: GQ](Downton. Muthaf--kin'. Abbey. | GQ)

The entire family is currently enjoying White Collar. We also enjoyed Lie to Me, Sherlock Holmes, and Hack. Personally I loved North and South, Drop Dead Diva, Merlin, and the Tudors. For movies, I recently watched Under the Same Moon. Touching movie.

Friday Night Lights–the BEST!!!
Nip/Tuck
Downton Abbey
“Dad’s in Heaven with Nixon”–great documentary

^ will check out “Dad’s in Heaven with Nixon”.

Recently watched **Harvard Beats Yale 29-29 /b
I’m not a football fan, and thought this movie a gem.

Watched on Amazon Streaming, because Netflix didn’t have it. John Huston’s last directorial movie ** The Dead** by James Joyce. Watched this one because I’m taking adult lit class and had to read the stunning short story. (Movie is not particularly great, only if you’d like to see the Huston’s adaptation of this famous author)

Also loved “Sixty-six” about a British boy’s preparing for his Bar Mitzvah and realizes England might make it to the World Cup scheduled for the same day. True story.

Not a football fan but Friday Night Lights really wasn’t about football.

Aloha, Lie to Me is my new favorite! And now I use the micro facial expression recognition stuff in real life. So interesting. And Romany I am so glad you found Eureka! H likes to watch the Catherine Cookson stories with me; these are sweet British dramas with strong women and are lovely period pieces romanticized to be uplifting. The IT Crowd is a very funny Britcom we’re into now. We’re going to stream next I Capture the Castle based on recommendations. We find the more we rate the things we’ve watched the better the rating system gets. It’s pretty good! Oh yes and Warehouse 13 is a fun sci fi TV series.

When D was home on break, she introduced us to Arrested Development on Netflix. We all watched all 53 episodes. Very, very funny and wonderful guest stars!

The Politician’s Wife - Three-part drama about a member of British Parliament and his wife. The politician is discovered to be having an affair with an escort (played by a young Minnie Driver), the wife realizes that her world was a sham and reacts. Great performances from Trevor Eve and Juliet Stevenson.

All Creatures Great and Small - Series about a Yorkshire vet based on books written by James Herriot. Kid friendly viewing.

Penelope - A charming little fairy tale about an heiress who tries to break a family curse. Christina Ricci and James McAvoy have nice chemistry. Catherine O’Hara as Ricci’s mother is just plain great.

I really enjoyed Bill Cunningham’s New York. One day last spring I spotted him in Central Park observing the crowd. It was a treat to see him in action.

Portlandia
