Re: the concern about DC. Are we talking about the RNC event from last night or the March on Washington today? I can only judge by what I see in pictures, but the event last night looked like the vast majority of attendees were maskless. I’m just starting to see photos from today’s march, and perhaps they are strategically-angled, but in the few that I’ve seen, it seems that almost everyone is wearing a mask.
Glad the events have been clarified. We were talking initially about the event last night but it moved to the event today without mentioning the event being referenced. Thanks for the clarification of what event you were referring to @Singersmom07 .
New Jersey has issued a travel advisory, not a mandate. From the official state website: “the self-quarantine is voluntary, but compliance is expected.” Filling out an online traveler survey is also voluntary, and “if you choose to fill out the survey, it will be shared with New Jersey Public Health authorities”.
I traveled recently by plane. I found the airports, especially the less huge one, were just fine. Everyone masked and lots of sanitizer and spacing of people. Weak link at the large airports is airport train. Also escalator. Masks but not significant distancing. Rental car process was good- plexiglass shields and to exit the airport you just show your license by putting it up against your closed car window. I’m not one who wipes down everything but I do focus on my own hands and what I touch.
We returned to our home in CT from spending 3 weeks in a hot zone (SC). In SC we stayed in our own beach house so pretty much followed the same COVID protocol as while we were in CT, maybe even safer. Went between our house, the beach (where the nearest party is probably >100 feet away), the grocery store (masked/sanitized). No restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, etc. Drove down and back and followed careful guidelines during the drive as well.
We feel like our chance of acquiring COVID there is next to nil, but are happy to follow CT quarantine rules upon our return. Filled out the traveler’s online form and have gone NOWHERE since we got back. Why? Because we were asked to. Because CT has flattened the curve. Because it’s safe. Because my mom has underlying conditions. Because I don’t want to be “that lady” who doesn’t follow guidelines.
Maybe it’s overkill but I don’t mind. One more week!
If Covid doesn’t go away and we were to buy a condo on an island like the USVI, are we still able to go use it over the winter even if they “close” to tourism? USVI is US.
Any difference if we were to pick BVI or Grenada? (Foreign islands)
“The State of Vermont has determined that any county with less than 400 active cases of COVID-19 per one million residents is now eligible for quarantine-free leisure travel.” Wow, they take it down to the county level! You can look at the map in this link to see if your county in New England qualifies. Mine does, but an adjacent one does not.
@creekland - we actually have friends of friends who are sailing around the Caribbean this year. As I understand it, most of the islands are requiring them to quarantine on their boat for 14 days before being allowed to disembark. It is enough of a pain that they have decided to remain on the first island they visited.
I was looking into winter trips. What is prohibited in the USVI appears to be rentals to non-residents. If you are an owner, you would be OK. I though the British VI were keeping out US citizens- like Canada. Aruba has been open.
This Canada incident seemed to happen in June. Unfortunate behavior but penalties seem excessive? There are plenty of people in the United States ignoring guidelines all over the place, in terms of masks and social distancing. That is “ugly” to me, although I’m not a fan of that word. I just wish people, from the top down, would model appropriate behavior and do what they’re supposed to be doing here. Very frustrating to see people ignoring common sense guidelines.
That was interesting, thanks. We’re in a yellow county with red all around. I’m not surprised at all. Cases around here are going up and not nearly as many seem to care as before.
Sometimes you have to follow your own sense of what is right. I traveled to another state where there aren’t mask requirements, but I still wore mine. We can have outdoor gatherings of 25, but I think that’s too many so plan for fewer.
On the other hand, I don’t think that just because a state (or Island) has a mask rule that it is going to keep me safe. People are acting like masks are some super saver, a bullet proof vest for your mouth and nose. Hardly. They are not tested so you have no way of knowing if the fabric is thick enough to prevent the particles from passing through, if the person is wearing it correctly, if they’ve washed it recently.
You have to decide for yourself. Any trip is riskier than staying home.
@Creekland regarding the VI. They are currently on a Stay at Home order. Essential work only, bars closed, restaurants are takeout only, no new guests checking in. The hospitals have patients on ventilators. They ask that pleasure travelers stay away-want only medical, business, and emergency response people flying in. My kid thinks it will be a couple of months before they move to Safer at Home.
Now, if you own your own place I think it would be ok to arrive as you are going to your own property. In a couple of months I hope they will have been able to move back to Safer as Home with more businesses opening up. I know you are are the careful and considerate type so be sure to reassure the anxious locals who are not happy about people coming down and acting cavalier about the virus.
From what I have read, boat people are having a tough time of it. USVI ports are open but most Caribbean ones are not, including Puerto Rico. Mooring balls may be in short supply. VI keeps clearing boats moored improperly out of Magen’s Bay.
BVI is shut down and they are super strict and enforce this - don’t even want people sailing through their waters. They have had an increase of cases recently which the government is mad about. How are they getting in? Obviously some contact is made with outside.
My daughter says that the tourism being down ( Stay at Home) meant many air b and b type places were heavily discounted. If the trend continues, someone may be willing to rent to you for a couple of months at a good price. That way you don’t have to deal with the expensive electricity bills and water bills.
Friends of ours own a sort of time share place in Bermuda and recently traveled there. They were required to have a negative COVID test before they left. They took a direct flight there and said it was a good feeling knowing that everyone on the plane was most likely COVID free. https://bm.usconsulate.gov/covid-19-information/
