What did you do (unintentionally) that embarrassed your child on school tours?

I strongly disagree with this statement but refuse to debate in spite of your being wrong😀

That is good because, as we have all been repeatedly warned by various moderators, debate is not allowed on CC.

Please move on from that confrontational tone as it is hardly welcoming or friendly.

Don’t forget your other favorite activity at age 19–recording PBS Masterpiece Theater while brewing tea!

Nobody’s gonna tell us how to party!!!

I remember many years ago, David Letterman was doing a top ten list for the top ten signs you’re in a bad frat and one of them was “Saturday night is Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman night”

When the tour guide said “I’m going to be walking backwards” and I replied “the moms will be sure to warn you if you are going to fall”.

Really? I couldn’t even focus. Everytime we visited and the guide just took us to the next spot then turned and talked…I thought…common sense at last. At least you know where you’re going. If not in life then at least on the sidewalk.

Daughter and I Uber’ed straight from the airport with no chance to drop off our luggage before the afternoon tour. Of course the admissions office people did not want to be luggage storage service so we dragged our rolly-bags all over campus. Going over some of those cobblestones can be quite noisy so it was cringe-y trying to keep up and hear what the guide was saying while rolling the bags as quietly as possible. She didn’t end up applying there for other reasons…I think.

We accidentally mortified D24 on two tours.
Once, during a group tour, for walking too closely to her. A friend happened to a be on that tour as well, so the two of them walked together, which apparently meant we should have become invisible. On another tour, which was just our family and a tour guide, D24 could not believe I asked about the party scene. She had asked me earlier in the day how college party scenes vary and since I didnt have a good answer, I figured the tour guide would. Obviously, I was wrong.

I can’t wait to see how much we embarrass her at revisit day!

I’m somehow the cool parent, but I really think that it’s because I’m introverted and don’t say much! My poor H is the walking embarrassment. His big crime was wearing his Penn State hat on our Pitt tour. And then having the audacity to speak with other parents (and their kids!) on the tour.

This and the replies are so funny! I’m glad it provides a CC catharsis.

I started this thread because the clicky shoes episode was five years ago and I had forgot about it. Then, a week ago, when I was visiting a college with my son, the adults and children were split, and in the adult group the college person made a joke about all the things adults do on tours that embarrass kids. My hand SHOT up and - it was clearly not a time for questions but my hand was so insistent that she called on me - and I added No Clicky Shoes. I didn’t realize until that moment I had Post Tour Stress Disorder and needed catharsis.

Whoa there pardner. Are you totally sure? I just got flashes of the Amy Poehler cool mom in Mean Girls. This seems dangerous territory . . . . maybe you are the relatively cool parent, that’s a different thing.

I only have one account! I promise! If I had two there would be a better username . . . I didn’t realize at the time I made it oh so many years ago that it would be so important. It’s the name of my favorite dead cat :woman_shrugging:

Well, my second never got tours because of Covid.

But for my first, every time the tour guide mentioned “laundry is free” I would respond “well, it’s included in room and board.” She was less than thrilled.

Oh no. This is going to happen to us next week. We have to taxi or uber straight to the tour from the airport. We will have backpacks instead of rolling bags but I was hoping they would just let us leave them at the admissions office. Guess we will embarrass ourselves instead.

No worries, you should be ok! Please do try asking (they might be more sympathetic to bag-sit) for sure. Backpacks are super smart - this was a few years ago and I def would do a backpack today, however I was dropping my daughter off on a summer program the next day so she had a suitcase load of stuff for her two weeks. Plus, wishing you nice smooth pavement on your tour.

Backpacks on tours are super embarrassing! Do not go there, don’t even think about it! (According to S when we were touring.)
