What did you get for Mothers Day?

Mother’s Day was always about my mother. When she died I really didn’t want to celebrate, but my husband just took me out for breakfast. My kids will be here for breakfast and dinner. Flowers and an orchid…
Oh, and I got a facelift.

I’m not too big on it either, I feel if it merits a special call them I’m not getting called enough the other days of the year! But I’m not going to turn down Queen with Adam Lambert tickets and a plane ride! Little vacation for me. DD and I went to American Idol Final 4 night with Adam, to the tour that year and met them at the buses, she had a giant poster that was seen on Final 4 night being held up heroically by my mother, and got interviewed by the Idol in 60 seconds guy Jim Cantiello with same poster.

Poo. Discovered that the “outlet mall” price for the perfume was waaay above (as in 3-4x higher) pricing elsewhere. That is annoying and our mothers day activity will be to return it, just on principal.

My D sent me a box of cookies, it was very nice of her. Haven’t heard anything from S, not holding my breath. I’m not mad but he is a good son, just terrible with acknowledging things. I text them and remind the kids to call their dad but somehow H thinks they remember his birthday on their own ;).

My H stepped up this year. I got a set of Bluetooth headphones that I’ve been wanting. He took me to a nice restaurant that he doesn’t like to go to but knows I do. Didn’t complain either which is a present in its self. I am planning on playing golf with friends (H can’t play right now) and then we will go out to dinner with a group. It is beautiful out today. It will be a great day to be outside and having fun.

I also ordered a skirted capri from Athleta, will probably play golf in them. Couldn’t pass up the 20% off sale lol!

I don’t have a running dress but I do have a running skirt. It’s no different running in the skirt than it is running in shorts or tights.

My MIL doesn’t even pretend that her S sent her a Mother’s Day present. She called me to thank lol!

We are not MD gifts/flowers type people, but my D and SIL are taking me and my co-MIL out to brunch later this week. S is graduating next week–that’s gift enough for me!

Made a smoothie this morning with several fruits, mint, spinach and little of each of the supplements DS sent. Epic fail. Came out looking dark brown and the taste isnt much better :frowning: DH volunteered to drink half of it. I am trying to drink what I can. It is not one of my better attempts.

I’m not really into this holiday one way or the other. H left before I got up and sent me a text, which is fine with me. D sent me someecards – but the site is down, arggh! I expect that S will call at one point. I don’t care about getting gifts. My sister and I are taking our mother out to dinner, which we do annually – all the “girls.”

I got a jumping board for my pilates reformer, something I had been wanting. I am also going out for brunch in a few minutes. I saw someone at church this morning with a orchid corsage -it made me think of when I was a child you saw lots of corsages on mothers day.

My mother was one who always believed that everyday should be Mother’s Day, so there was no need to single out one day for celebration. My father and I never did anything special on Mother’s Day. 35 years ago, after my father died in April, I ignored Mother’s Day as I’d always done. Well, suddenly, my mother’s attitude toward the day changed, but she had failed to fill me in. She was totally hurt and insulted that I ignored the day, and showed her displeasure by ignoring my birthday in June. Needless to say, I’ve never forgotten a Mother’s Day since then and will be visiting my now 92 yo mother in a nursing home today. I’ll give her a card she’ll make me read to her and then tell me to put away in a drawer.

DH is out of town and sent a lovely card. DS1 is still at college and hopefully will call. DS2 is my thoughtful one (and the only one at home today). He gave me beautiful flowers, a wonderful card and a cupcake. He’s taking me out to brunch also.

A video greeting “card” from a faraway land! :)

DH is very color blind. He proudly purchased some garish, neon dyed cut flowers for me for Mother’s Day. I’m sure they looked very cheery to him. I thanked him profusely and didn’t say a word about the colors.

Since my Mother’s Day is going to be a bust, I’ll tell you what I’m doing for my own mom. Notice that for me, Mother’s Day doesn’t entail great expense, but it does mean taking some time and trouble, and putting some thought into it.

Phase 1 was last Saturday. Mom has a large afghan which I crocheted for her several years ago, but it’s hard for her to drag it back and forth from the bed to her living room chair. So I told her that I’d like to make her a lapghan for the living room. She loved the idea, so we went to the yarn store together and she picked out the yarns. She’s not a needlework person, but she loves the beauty of a yarn store, so that was great fun for her. Then I spent the rest of Saturday selecting a pattern, checking supplies, etc. Started the project on Monday and worked on it all week.

Yesterday was Phase 2. I took her and her 93-year-old BFF out for sushi for Mother’s Day Eve lunch. We had a great time selecting our items, with the assistance of a very helpful server. The BFF had never had sushi before, so it was especially exciting for her (luckily she liked it!) If you’ve ever had to manage 2 oldsters and their walkers on a outing, you know this can be challenging. But we had a great time.

Today will be Phase 3. DH and I are going over to the Assisted Living for the Mother’s Day brunch – huge spread, very festive. We’ll ask the BFF to join us for a little foursome. Mom will get her card today, with a tiny swatch made from the lapghan yarns, as a down payment on her real gift. I’m torn about texting D to ask her call Grandma; on the one hand, she should call and she probably won’t remember, but on the other, I don’t want to be accused of guilting her into reminding her that it’s her own mother’s Mother’s Day too. It would be nice if DH would text her to call Grandma, but he’s been up for an hour and so far doesn’t appear to remember that it’s my Mother’s Day.

Anyway, Phase 4 will be ongoing for the next 2 or 3 weeks as I finish the lapghan. Then I will pack it up in a pretty gift bag, and make a big production about giving it to her.

My daughters are home and not fighting :). Coffee in bed, a nice card and two prints, one referencing wine, the other, coffee. They know me well.
Mother’s Day is all about my mother. I’ll head over to her apartment this afternoon with a card and GC for a nursery; she needs some new plants for her deck.
She did give her daughters the best gift this week: she agreed to, and had blood drawn for, genetic testing for 23+ breast cancer and related gene mutations. 23 years after her dx and me and two of my four sisters with dx in the past 6 years. So happy she’s done this. It is not easy for her.

Cards from both kids before the holiday. D’s included a promise to treat me to Cafe du Monde on our upcoming trip to NOLA and S & DIL sent a Kindle download of a NOLA book. Also, a promise of another package (???). Phone call from D this morning which was welcome, but wasn’t unusual. However, one from S, who is in Hong Kong with his wife for a conference she is attending, was a big surprise since I didn’t expect to hear from him again until he gets back to the U.S. on May 24th.

Wish I had my mom to wish her a happy day, so I’m a little jealous of those of you who have that opportunity.

A phone call from DS! I’m happy.

Later I’m taking BFF out, as she lost her mother this year. They inluded me for dinner all the years since my beloved mom passed away. This is the first year I have no one to give a gift to.

I’m impressed by Z-bee’s mom, getting that blood test. So many of you are such great daughters. LasMa, your lapghan (a new word for me) sounds lovely. Making the most of garish bouquet because the hubby showed effort, classy. PG, its nice you live near both your sister and mother. And so on…

Cinnamon pancakes and delicious coffee from my daughter. And we’ll go to the movies on her dime later. Now let’s see if she does the dishes as promised!

I hated Mother’s Day after my mother died when I was in my early 30s. No mom, no kids, bah humbug! But I love the holiday now, and my daughter always remembers. Hope she remembers next year when she’s away at college, although I guess she’ll likely be home by then. It’s just the 2 of us and I am not looking forward to the very empty nest.

I will receive no gifts, and that’s fine by me. Just don’t think today’s a big deal. I went to the cemetery this morning to talk to my mom. She’s missed so much “good stuff.” :frowning:

Got a card from S#1, S#3 just called and S#2 is in the middle of finals, so I’d rather he concentrate on his prep than thinking about when he should call. DH asked where I would like to go to dinner, but of course every place will be packed and he didn’t make reservations. My gift to myself is not cooking dinner tonight, but now I have the pressure of figuring out a reasonable place to go where we don’t need reservations and there won’t be a 2 hour line. My final gifts to myself are watching an entire baseball game on TV, and I will watch The Good Wife tonight, uninterrupted.

An extra long hug from my 13 year-old daughter! She wanted me to know that was the reason for the extra long hug! :)

Oh, I made a Bailey’s with whipped cream latte for myself. Does that count?
