I would guess smaller schools offer better supervision (as a general rule). Certainly it is harder to fall between the cracks at a smaller school.
I felt my kid’s boarding school was pretty “locked down”. The kids that wanted to get into trouble did, but they would have anywhere. My son wanted nothing to do with it and had no problem avoiding it.
All that stuff happens at every HS. School populations and reputations turn over after a few years, so even if you avoid a school known for “faster” kids, by the time your kid goes to some other school, that other school will have gotten a new crop of kids.
But if you think you have a kid who is attracted to the rule-breaking crowd, then maybe boarding school isn’t the best option at 14. Or, lots of conversations with your kids about what they may encounter and how to handle situations.
No school is immune from teenage behavior.
The press greatly overplays many of the events due to typical teenage behavior because it sells when privileged students at esteemed schools can be exposed as behaving like normal teenagers.
