What Is Your Food Crime?

We buy pickle juice shots for my husband, to stop his occasional nighttime leg cramps. It works quite well.

I tend to eat foods with few sauces or toppings added, so I don’t have any stories of unique combinations. However, this eating foods in isolation may qualify as food crimes. Some examples include:

  • When I order a hamburger/cheeseburger. I ask for no mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, or other sauces. I also ask for no onions. If the only cheese option is American, I’ll ask for no cheese as well.

  • My most common Subway order is elite, chicken, bacon, and ranch. However, I order without the ranch and without any other dressing/sauce.

  • When my parents were visiting recently, my father so a large package of oatmeal on the counter and was enthusiastic about being able to have oatmeal in the morning. However, when he tried to the prepare, he seemed completely baffled by me not having sugar or salt in the house, and not having anything to put on his oatmeal.

  • It’s extremely rare that I ever order pancakes or waffles, but if I do order them, I’ll have them without syrup, butter, or other toppings.

This lack of toppings is not primarily for health reasons. I think all of the above worsens the taste. I like the natural taste of foods, not the taste of the other added stuff. I especially dislike mayonnaise. Ketchup is also quite bad, with the vinegar flavor. I dislike almost any topping that has a lot of salt. One exception is avocado. I do think that avocado topping enhances taste, particularly on a chicken sandwich.

But I can’t stand sweet coffee. Flavored does not mean sweet.

I never eat the pizza bones (edge crust) and mostly scrape the toppings. I eat very little of the flat crust. I’d be happy with just a bowl of sauce and toppings covered in melted cheese.

I agree!

My condiment of choice for eating French fries is tartar sauce. When I eat Raisin Bran cereal, I wait until the cereal gets completely mushy in the milk before eating it.

At our local pizza chain (i mean it’s a chain but originated locally!) you can get a pizza bowl - exactly what you said, lots of sauce and all the toppings you select - then baked. I love to get that.

Do you shy away from entrees that have sauce in them, like pasta dishes, chicken piccata, and risotto?

And how do you feel about gravy – do you put gravy on your mashed potatoes?

Apologies if this is too inquisitive/intrusive.

I’ll often pour the milk in the Raisin Bran, then put the bowl in the refrigerator to get soggy and stay cold.

We could share a piece! The crust is my favorite part.

Who likes mayonnaise and jam mixed slathered on bread slice?

No jam or mayo, but I like a thick layer of sour cream on a toasted bagel or rye bread.

My husband taught me to drink instant Folgers. That is a big food crime in Seattle!

DH considers these my food crimes (made me post them):

  • I cut up my entire plate of “stringy” pasta (spaghetti, fettucine, linguine, etc.) into small bites before eating. No spoon twirling here. (He always says, “Why don’t you just open a can of Spaghetti-Os?”)

  • I also cut up all my meat before starting to eat it. (He says, “What are you? Three?”)

  • I put A1 on my steak, any steak, regardless of how choice. After I cut it up, of course. (DH just looks away.)

These are probably more table crimes than food crimes, but DH is standing over me and says we’ll argue about the distinction (again) after I hit “Reply.”

22 years and counting. :joy::rofl:. He still can’t cook worth a damn. He also will not eat any vegetable - at all - except iceberg lettuce and uncooked celery and he will not eat any fish or shellfish other than canned tuna. So yeah, we’ll just say his palate was not a selling point.

Potato chips and sour cream.

We hardly ever do fast food, but if we do, I get McDonalds Filet o Fish just so I can rip off the extra superfluous bun edges and dip my French fries in the tartar sauce.

I don’t eat mashed potatoes . Mashing a mixture of butter, milk, and cream in to potatoes results in something I don’t care for. I do like baked potatoes. It never occurred to me to try gravy on either type of potatoes.

I do like many types of Italian meals with tomato-type sauces, rather than creamy type sauces. However, it’s possible I would prefer them with a different type of sauce. I expect I’ll like the sauce more as you get closer to fresh tomatoes + meats, and further from vinegar, cream, butter, dressing, and the like.

My family will say my food crime is eating pizza with a fork and knife.

In the absence of hot honey I like a little bit of jam on breakfast bacon egg and cheese sandwich.
