What the heck is the go to first new post thing?

other than annoying that is.

Where are you seeing this message?

It’s kind of a “bookmark.” It takes you to the first post in the thread that was posted after the last time you visited the site. That way, you go back to where you left off reading a thread, and for threads of multiple pages, it’s a great time-saver. You miss less and don’t spend a lot of time re-reading.

I agree, swimscatmom, totally annoying, which is why I am glad that it only shows up occasionally on my screen. Time-saver, Chedva? I need a brain-saver, which is why I have to re-start the reading of the thread if I’ve left it for over an hour. ;)

Chedva, where is this bookmark?

It’s the little blue square with the white arrow pointing down, to the left of the thread title. I find it very useful.

It was not a little blue square. It was the words “go to the first new post” preceding the title of every thread listed when I went to a forum. For instance for this thread it would have said “go to the first new post what the heck is the go to the first new post thing?” I had it yesterday but it is gone today thank goodness. Maybe my computer was just doing something weird?

Yes, it wasn’t downloading (or displaying; not sure which) the icon (graphic) for that function, is all. If you hold your cursor over the graphic now, you should see the same words appear.

Yes it does. Don’t mint the icon. The words added to the front of the thread title was just annoying. Never happened before - strange.

Hmmm… I don’t have this feature. I see a blue box with an arrow that goes to the last post, but not one that goes to the first new post. You must be special, swimcatsmom! :)

How is that different from “View First Unread”?

^^^ The first unread would be the first post since one last reat the thread. If a thread is hoppin’ busy, there could be a boatload of posts that were posted since the last one read, whereas my link would take me to the very last post, which could be many posts down from the “last unread”; i.e. if I last read post 10, and the thread was now up to post 29, my link would take me to post#29 whereas swimcatmoms would go to post # 11. Does that make sense?

Where is this located? I see something at the bottom of the thread called “Bookmarks.” It has a bunch of little shapes for things called delicious, Digg, etc. I have heard of Google, Myspace and facebook, but not the others.

jym, I have never seen a “go to last post” button on this website… the closest I can get to that is clicking the last page # (or “last page”) and then scrolling down. Where are you finding this?

clicking the blue button next to the thread should take you to the first post in that thread that you haven’t read.

Soccerguy,
In the “last post” column to the right of the thread titles on the main forum page is the name of the last poster who posted and the time of their post. Next to it is a little blue box with an arrow. Clicking on that arrow takes you to the last post. The only things I have next to the thread names on the right are checkmarks if I have posted in (subscribed to) a thread, but it is not clickable, and I see the sticky/pushpin things for the permanently saved threads at the top (not clickable). There is also occasionally a little tag-looking thing (its white on the edge, light blue inside) thing that when you put your mouse over it will say different seemingly random things (seems to be some content words or topics in the thread), but this is also not clickable. I don’t have a “go to first new post” option. Weird…

AAAhhh-- the “go to first new post” is the blue checkmark to the LEFT of the thread title. However, if I’ve posted int a thread it has a red star where that check would be, and the star isn’t clickable. Seems I can only go to the first new post if I haven’t posted in a thread (which seems counterintuitive). If I’ve posted in a thread it has a “subscribed” checkmark to the right of the title, but it isn’t clickable. So how come if I’ve posted I canmat go to the llast thread read, but if I havent red or posted in a thread it lets me go to the first new post ? New since when? If I haven’t read a thread they should all be new…

^^^ typos and error in the last paragraph but too late to correct it. What I meant to say is that if I have posted in a thread it doesnt let me go to the first new post, yet if I havent read or posted in a thread, it give the option to go to the first new post. New since when if I never looked at a thread?? Seems if I’ve read or posted in a thread it should let me go to the last post since I last read it. Confusing…

jym626, you should still be able to go to the first new post even if you’ve posted in the thread. The star appears in the yellow circle; the first new post icon should still be to the immediate left of the thread title, just before the first letter of the first word. Perhaps you need to maximize your browser window to see it?

Hi chedva,
Maybe its an aol thing, but nope, if I’ve posted in a thread there is a red star on top of the greyish circle below it (its the circle that is otherwise yellow when there is a new post) but there is nothing else between the star and the text of the thread title, even when I enlarge the window to full screen. Other thing I noticed is that if the circle is yellow (indicating a new post) the title of the thread is in bold and one of those blue “go to last post” boxes is there by the thread title. If the circle isn’t yellow, the title is not in bold and there is no “go to last post read” box. This is true whether or not I’ve read the thread. Seems the top handful of threads are in bold, with yellow circles, but those below arent. I noticed earlier, for example, that a thread in which someone had posted a 7 am had a yellow circle and box, but the thread below it, where the last post was at 6 am, did not have a yellow circle and was not bolded. Is there some time limit on when it will list a new post in yellow?? All very puzzling. Maybe the techno whizes like Lenitus need to take a peek at this.

The threads in bold are those which are new since your last sign-on. If you have posted in a thread, you should have a red star and a blue square for any threads in bold, and a red star only for any threads not in bold.

One of my CC pet peeves is that there seems to be a time limit in which CC can remain open on the desktop without any interaction from me before it decides the time of my last visit. For example, right now it says that my last visit was 7:07 AM and the only bold threads are those that were posted after 7:07 AM. However, if I leave CC open for 10-15 minutes and don’t click on any links within the forum (let’s say I’m writing a very long post and not clicking on threads), when I switch to a different forum all of the posts will now be UNbolded and the time of my last visit will now show up as the time I logged on this afternoon (around 12:20 PM). Any posts that were posted between 7:07 and 12:30 or so will appear in regular type and CC thinks that I have already read them.

I know this is as clear as mud. I’m not explaining it very well. Hope someone knows what I’m talking about…

Thanks, Pastsmom, but nope, I must have the budget edition or someting – I have EITHER a red star OR a blue square, not both.
