What's with HGTV lately?

They used to have all kinds of design and decorating shows all day long. Now all I can find are shows about house-hunting or finding rentals. Boring to me! I guess their sponsors must want this?

I have noticed the same thing. Not sure what the issue is…maybe because it’s summer?

But they show re-runs until prime time anyway. Why can’t they vary the content?

Totally agree! The quality has gone down so much in the last few years. Bring back Carol Duvall :-).

Back in the day they had all those crafty home shows and I am glad we are past those…but more style and redo a room shows would be nice. I do love Genevieve.

Oh my God, Carol Duvall is exactly who I was thinking of!!!

I don’t even remember Carol Duvall, but I really liked most of the designers. Where have they gone?

You must be channelling my thoughts, Bethivet. I can’t stand those house hunting shows and I really miss the decorating and, yes, I’ll admit it, the crafts.
Yesterday I got on the HGTV website looking for decorating ideas for my bathroom and it was so boring and over the top expensive. Whatever happened to the ideas for things to put on walls or unusual pillows or whatever?

EPTR–those things are still on the Nate Berkus Show. I used to like Design on a Dime. So innovative! How many of us need tips for buying a villa in Tuscany with a budget of $1.5 million? I mean really.

<<how many="" of="" us="" need="" tips="" for="" buying="" a="" villa="" in="" tuscany="" with="" budget="" $1.5="" million?="">></how>

ME! ME! I want to be able to need that info!!! ;)

I believe Nate Berkus was cancelled. I like the high end decorating shows as a guideline for decorating. And I do love gardening shows.

I love House Hunters International…but limited in scope:

Haha! And I want to be Arwen and marry Lord Aragorn. No, actually, I’m happy with my husband and even our house. I just want HGTV to change back.

Nate Berkus was cancelled?!! Oh man, what next? He’s on reruns for the summer and I’ll bet his website is good.

Candice Olson (Divine Design) was my favorite–I wanted her to come re-do my entire house. I also loved that show where they’d bring in three designers to do plans for a room, the homeowners would choose one, and then it would be done–British host I think–can’t remember the name. My H adores the house hunting shows, can’t get enough of them, even now that it’s been disclosed that they’re all faked—no accounting for taste, I guess.

I feel similarly regretful about the Food Network–solid cooking shows have been replaced by Sandra Lee’s vile recipes and endless cupcake contests.

I wonder if HGTV programming is different in Canada. Here’s the lineup for tomorrow, for example:

Disaster DIY, Income Property, Holmes on Homes, Sarah 101 (twice), Cowboy Builders, Best of Holmes on Homes, Disaster DIY, Income Property, HHI (twice), Holmes on Homes, Decked Out (twice), Income Property, Property Virgins, HH (twice), HHI, Property Virgins, Sarah 101 (twice), Best of H on H, Decked Out (twice).

So, the majority here are NOT househunting shows. Is your lineup different? It varies day to day, but we also have shows like Design U, Dirty Business (which is a landscape design show), House of Bryan, HGTV Design Star, there’s also another landscape design show but I can’t think of the name (something Yard…). I find that on weekends there are often marathons of one or two shows but I think that there are lots of reruns because it’s summer. I hope that the fall will bring new shows.

MommaJ, Candice is on the W Network here in Canada now. I haven’t seen her on HGTV in a while.

Does anyone else think Holmes on Holmes is really boring?

I like Flip This House on A&E.

It’s almost all Property Virgins, House-hunting, rental stuff and a bit of reno, like Property Brothers. No design that I can find. I’m giving up on the channel.

Definitely different than a couple of years ago. When my step-father was so ill and I would spend time with my mom, we would watch HGTV all day and it was fun and interesting. We had fun critiquing the various room make-overs. Some we loved - some we couldn’t stand. It was fun!

Right–it was visually pleasing and fun.

I don’t like Holmes either…I love Jeff Lewis (not HGTV but Bravo) and the show Millionaire Designers…or some such name. The show featured 3 very high end designers and the rooms they designed. One room with zigzag painted floors (black and white) for an office still makes me dizzy. But some rooms…fantastic.

It’s interesting to me that, considering the economy, HGTV has invested so much into shows that cater to those who can even afford to buy a home. During tough times, people are thrilled to find a way to add a little interest to their homes with little money invested. I would expect crafts to make a big a comeback but they haven’t. The thing that I liked about HGTV back in the early days was that the ideas were, generally, refreshing and creative and could be done by almost anyone.
The shows where a couple goes to three mediocre apartments and has to decide which one…good God, who cares?!
