Why Do People Revere UC Berk and UCLA So Much?

PEALS-05

Thank you, I take this as a compliment(LOL).

I brought up Kate Beckinsale eventhought it’s a trivial matter, it’s a matter that is black/white, one can verify whether the fact is correct or not, so no one can bully anyone else. But you consistently bully other people on most subject, pretend to sound knowledgeable when you are not so that is why I brought it up. Here you go again, dead wrong and still pretending as if you know everything, another word for a bully, verbally but still a bully.

Kate Beckinsale’s father is Richard Beckinsale, who is half Burmese, not her mother.
http://eternal-legacy.net/kate_beckinsale.html

You can’t believe everything you google(LOL), I personally had seen a picture of him in “Hello” magazine, that is why I know it’s the dad that’s has some Burmese blood in him.

So on matter like, why do people revere at UCB and UCLA so much, it’s even a greyer subject, you can stretch the truth however you want. I think some people original thought, including myself, that you really want to know the reasons but it’s obvious after a few posts that’s not really want what your intention was, your intention is to set them straight why you think Ivy league is far superior, you want to act like you are an authority on this matter, on a subject even the pros have to scratch their heads and still not able to come to any real good conclusion.

Furthermore, I notice on other subjects as well, you express an opinion but in a matter of fact as if you were an adcom and that is really what annoying, it’s just sad.

Sorry that is my 2 cents, go ahead with your post, I refuse to get suck into
this post.

why do people revere Berkeley and UCLA

because cali is where it’s at.

great weather, great schools.

PEALS-05, now I know, you’re going to USC, no wonder, I do expect these types of comments from students that go to USC.

any UC > USC

I thought 4-year in college is supposed to be fun, why do you have to sacrifice?(LOL) You seem to equate quality of education so much with East Coast school, I see it repeatly in all your posts. Sorry there is no correlation. You can throw tons of money at school and if you’re kids do not want to study then you get zero education East Coast or not. Also, I thought we’re supposed to let our kids decide what they want in picking their college instead of forcing down their throat the way you suggested, your choice instead of theirs. Is this good parenting?

Collegeperson, somehow besides the obvious stupid comment you made, what makes you think this person did not get into any school in the Ivy/East Coast and turned them down for a lower cost school, not everybody is a prestige concious. Really smart people make really smart decision base on a lot of factors not just purely prestige!

“PEALS-05, now I know, you’re going to USC, no wonder, I do expect these types of comments from students that go to USC.”

That’s unfair, don’t you think?

Yeah…probably was.

Let’s not get catty here people.

Remember…College Confidential…not High School Confidential.

“Thank you, I take this as a compliment(LOL).”

Really? You shouldn’t, because I didn’t mean for it to be.

“You can’t believe everything you google(LOL)”

No, I don’t. Because I didn’t Google my fact in the first place. The Internet Movie Database-- which I find FAR more reputable than your site, which advertises a “Nude Section” at the top of it, by the way-- says that Beckinsale’s maternal grandfather is Burmese, not her fraternal (father’s) grandfather. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000295/bio

Scroll down that link and you’ll see, quite clearly, “Her maternal grandfather was Burmese.”

“your intention is to set them straight why you think Ivy league is far superior, you want to act like you are an authority on this matter, on a subject even the pros have to scratch their heads and still not able to come to any real good conclusion.”

You really enjoy assuming and coming up with your own botched conclusions, don’t you? My intention was not to vaunt the Ivies in particular, but it has come about to seem that way because I most often use them as examples of “higher ranked schools” than Berk and UCLA. If you look carefully, I have also cited schools like “U of Chicago”, and not just Ivies. But of course, you wouldn’t look carefully at all.

I’m not an authority on this matter, but I have observed a lot about the opinions of people towards certain schools, and I have personally researched different universities and their strengths and weaknesses. Obviously, if people feel insecure and terribly threatened, they’re going to feel as if I’m trying to deride UCLA or Berk. And obviously, if they cared to read carefully, they would see that I have repeatedly stated that I have never derided the quality of education offered at both universities, but only questioned the level of reputation both sport among many people. Simple as that.

But of course, you haven’t picked up on any of that.

“PEALS-05, now I know, you’re going to USC, no wonder, I do expect these types of comments from students that go to USC.”

Yes, it’s true. You’re quite the expert on the behavior of every single student from USC, I know. All 32,00 current USC students are simply always making statements about UCLA and Berk that you would find derisive, right? And all 200,000 USC alumni are incredibly known-- by you yourself, no “less”-- for making for those types of comment, correct?

Once again, allow me to express surpise that you are an adult. I am seventeen years old and I sort of hate going through your posts because they are usually pretty inane.

“any UC > USC”

UserNizzle = expert at making lame and botched attempts at overrused and completely unoriginal insults

Congrats, UserNizzle, no one cares.

PEALS-05, of course they are inane because I don’t go to USC(sorry megastud), and the more I read these college confidential posts the more I revert back to childhood so I become on equal footing and bs all I like.
Reread my comment to see if you can see the sarcasm from my post, now go on and blow your nose.

I don’t need to blow my nose because I haven’t shed a tear.

“PEALS-05, of course they are inane because I don’t go to USC(sorry megastud)”

No, they’re not inane because you didn’t attend USC. They’re inane because they are simply not well-thought out and not particularily well-informed. If it had been any other school you chose to insult, I would have thought the same thing. It’s not the subject matter-- the school in particular-- but your manner of writing itself.

You were really being sarcastic? I really couldn’t tell.

“the more I revert back to childhood so I become on equal footing and bs all I like.”

It’s always interesting to see adults get annoyed and bothered enough to act younger, more immature and write less coherently than I am/do. Thanks, SusieQ.

PEALS-05, Idon’t plan to attend USC even if I can attend. My employer pays for any degree I want to take for free, some kids in my work place also come from USC and you can see from his nasal voice, he’s kind of whining like you.
You couldn’t tell the sarcasm because your IQ is probably too low, now is that hitting below the belt enough. Yes I’m 2-year old, go sue me.

bwahaha. this is getting so out o’ hand, i love it.

…so rude

SusieQ2007…

I know you are trying to get your point across, but you should really watch your manners. I’m sure PEALS is mature enough not to get overly offended by your comment, but I find what you said to be very rude. Whether you agree with PEAL’s arguments or not, there is no need to question a person’s IQ based on a simple difference of opinions, or a misunderstanding on a trivial message board. Sure, we can all complain about PEAL’s lengthy posts, but my opinions and thoughts are just as long, and perhaps just as raa-raa about my own university.

You claim to be an adult and a mother, perhaps maybe even a parent of a college bound or current student. Shame on you for resorting to such childish remarks. Neither my mother or father participate on this board, but I know if they did, they would never dream of saying such things. I also have seen many polite, encouraging parents on this board but the way you are acting is not appropriate in the least.

And if we’re going to talk about IQ and intelligence, then perhaps you should represent yourself in a better light. Personally, I can hardly understand your posts, due to spelling and grammar alone.

From similar USC post:

I think this is the real reason why PEALS start this thread, so he can flame them. Exactly my point after reading several posts.

i’m impressed by the ability of people throughout this thread to insert (borderline?) ad hominem attacks into their (sometimes) substantive arguments.

USC is the best school in the entire globe.

geez…i hope this will help you sleep at night.

they get so bitter when people have an opinion about thier school. how could you blame them , average student paying 30k per year, when they can get a great education west of the of the city for 6K. i’d be bittered too.

i’m sorry to say but if you’re from California, there’s no need to waste that kind of money. but if you can get in for free–more power to you. out of state students are different.

My fact was wrong, ha what a laugh , I told you, you were wrong and you keep on bully people. Go find a picture of Kate Beckinsale mom and dad and tell me who has Burmese blood.

Despite the good laughs this thread is offering me - and yes, for once I can say “lol” and mean it in its literal sense, I’m going to have to agree with Izziebear and ask you two to chill.

Peals, to answer a few of your thread questions, UCLA and Berkeley are revered because they are amazing institutions by themselves, price aside. Throw in the fact that they’re public and it only adds to their reverence. So much so that sometimes USC is overlooked because of malinformed assumptions that a UC is automatically both better and cheaper, and as I explained earlier, when one overlooks USC, it’s SO easy to form false assumptions, propagate anti-USC notions our rivals use but even know in their heart of hearts is false, and accuse us of possessing whiny voices without putting in any effort whatsoever to understand the complexity of the debate. Some would even make an anti-President Sample thread despite the fact that the local KPBS affiliate ran a documentary chronicling his leadership and the merits of USC.

Frankly, I’m astounded at how USC research you’ve done and all the positives you know about it. I’m also glad you’re willing to share it on CC, because as we both know, this all too often comes as new (and usually too hard to believe) information to many. It reinforces my belief that USC has some of the proudest students of any campus – even incoming freshmen who’ve yet to attend a Coliseum game as a student, play Ultimate Frisbee on McCarthy Quad at 1am, or watch the representative from USC demolish the students from Harvard and Yale on College Jeopardy.

However, I would urge you to stay above the fray; there are some people who will forever remain set in their decision that our school is a bastion of second-class scholars who drive, thanks to their parents’ checkbooks, first-class cars. Don’t stoop to their level; the last thing this board needs is another reason to discredit USC.

The facts are out there and your dissemination of them makes them even easier to find. Even so, some will refuse and that will just make those people appear worse to those of us (even from other schools) who know USC not to be some $30k money black hole.

BTW, anyone else reading this thread drawing parallels in their minds to Lord of the Flies?
