Out of State – California
I should have figured that by your name For OOS, his stats will be on the lower side. OOS admit rate was 28% last year. Overall, the middle 50% for the SAT was 1370-1510, so his hits on the lower end of that. But I don’t have the breakdown for instate vs OOS on the SAT. Does he have significant extracurriculars? What is his class rank? Mine is a freshman OOS who did go test optional last year. He was 4.0/4.52 with a significant extracurricular. WM does accept around 45% of its class through early decision.
his school doesn’t do class rank. He does have good EC, but not extraordinary. 2 varsity sports, several jobs, NHS. I might try to gently encourage him not to apply… I def think it’s a long shot
It wouldn’t hurt to apply as long as he knows how the chances are. Really strong essays will help. It also might depend on how many other CA applications they get. They like to have students from all states.
My D24 was deferred from ED1 to RD with a weighted gpa of 4.27, 7 APs, rest honors, a letter of rec from a previous student and teacher, a talent portfolio (goes to an honors theater program as well as her regular school), over 300 hours of meaningful volunteer work, 2 years varsity swim, other ECs. 2 jobs (tutor, lifeguard). Not NHS but National Social Studies Honor Society. Did not submit test scores. she also did the interview, tour, and 2 online panels. W&M most recent stats have the average GPA as 4.4.
@SoCal92780 - Make sure to finish up strong. Two things going for him are 1) From the West Coast, although they do get a fair number of students from Cali (25 least class) it may still help from a geographic diversity standpoint. 2) He’s a male. As the numbers of male students continuing on to a 4 year college drops, schools struggle to try and keep some balance. At W&M it’s almost 60/40 female to male for the class of 2027. There were almost 4K more women that applied, and acceptance rate for male students was 7 higher more than the female students.
William and Mary saw a rise in the number of Early Decision applications this year, with a 15% increase from last year and a 45% increase over the past two years. This year’s Early Decision I pool saw notable growth among first-generation students and students who are likely to be Pell Grant-eligible, as well as increases from both in-state and out-of-state applicants.
“As a result, the creation of William & Mary’s Class of 2028 is already off to a strong start, and we look forward to building on that momentum in the next few months as we work to identify even more students we believe will thrive at W&M and enhance our community.”
Any info on ED2? How many applications or expected decision date?
Released in early February. Someone here may have a list of past dates. They don’t usually tell the date until the day it is released. Applications for ED1 were up this year and they expect the same for ED2.
Last year ED2 was released on 1/25
For those who ultimately receive a waitlist offer but who are still wanting to attend WM, this information is about the Spring Pathway to guaranteed admission from the waitlist.
Early Decision 2 is out!
Good luck to all!
DD24 Deferred to RD. Any insight on chances in RD? Instate Is it a soft reject?
It’s not a reject, but they are wanting to compare your student against the regular decision pool.
My DD also deferred. I don’t know if these numbers are still accurate but W&M admissions used to actually post here 10-ish years ago and said only around 10% of deferred ED applicants are picked up in RD. So not much of a chance… but there’s a chance. Good luck!
Will be curious to see the ED numbers from this class, last year they filled a little over 40% via ED1&2. I would guess that they don’t want to go much above that 40% number so you may see more high stats students deferred (especially females).
They have to be careful about balancing the OOS/InState ratio - I believe they messed up recently. That will likely affect ED since they take a large number in ED.
Interesting deck from Nov 2023
Slides 30-40 are most interesting. Projecting a significant increase of 6-10k OOS student to Virginia universities which helps maintain enrollment in light of national trends and declining enrollment…BUT… also simultaneously considering eliminating aid to OOS. Seems like cross-purposes
