While VA doesn’t have an actual cap, there’s been proposed legislation in past years to limit that to 25%. Both W&M and UVA hover around that 2/3 in-state number. I would guess that going to far above that would bolster the support for a hard cap. Overall W&M is right at 33% but the past 2 freshman classes were 37% & 38% OOS so you might see some lower numbers this year.
Ok, so my kid was accepted into plenty of good schools, but W and M is still her top. The ED defferal really elongated this process more thab we expected. Wish we could find out sooner.
I am trying to decide if it is too late for her to update them with more info. Like another video for acting or getting inducted into the Social Stidies Honor Society (it was already listed in the common app) or just being chosen in her class to be the producer of their senior play at her theater school.
Not sure they are worth reaching out about.
I wouldn’t send anything else at this point. The theater faculty have already seen her arts supplement and you mentioned that her honor society is already on the common app. Decisions will be out in three weeks. Good luck to her!
Have you sent any updates since the deferral? If you have sent just one(as in a letter of continued interest), I would recommend you send another: keep it brief and to the point. If you have already sent 2 updates then I think do not send anything else. This is not just my opinion, it is how deferrals from ED are generally handled at our school: first a letter of continued interest shortly after the deferral, then IF there are some honors or significant updates, then another update(ie being chosen as producer ) in Feb or no later than early March.
@MotherMother1 I hear you! My son is in a similar position—deferred from W&M ED1, accepted to other great schools, but W&M is still his first choice. While S24 is very relaxed about it, for me it feels like a race I was hoping would be a sprint turned out to be an ultra-marathon .
I actually think S24 could find a great match at one of his other schools, but he doesn’t want to attend accepted students days until all answers are in (understandably). That makes it feel like we are treading water until April and then we may have to gather a lot of info and do a lot of visits under time pressure. I do appreciate that our state schools (SUNY) have extended their commitment deadline to May 15th .
About sending an update, S24 considered it as he earned a regional award for an EC. Then I found this on the website:
What if I have additional materials to add to my application but I have already sent in all required materials?
William & Mary will accept additional materials after the application deadline. While most supplemental materials will arrive in time to be reviewed, the Undergraduate Admission Office does not guarantee that it will review any materials mailed after the January 1 freshman applicant postmark deadline, or the October 1/March 1 transfer applicant postmark deadline. Any supplemental materials should include the student’s full name and high school or current institution so that we might easily match materials with the student’s application.
I think the date is January 5th this year, and it may be different for deferred ED applicants. However, the fact that they might not read updates made S24 decide not to send one. In early January, he sent a letter of continuing interest, and a teacher sent a third letter of recommendation. Both are listed on his portal as Miscellaneous Documents.
Very best wishes to all deferred ED 1 and 2 students and their parents. It’s a tricky place to be for the next three weeks. Sending hugs and lots of luck !
Thanks!
My Daughter is wondering the same - she was just notified she was nominated for an honor at school (academic all-american), but not sure how she might inform the schools she is still waiting for. She didnt see a way to do it through the portals - so would you send an email to the AO or maybe it is too late and she doesn’t send anything? Thank you all!
If this is something she is particularly proud about, I think you can send an email if there is no portal update function. You can keep it brief and direct, and who knows if it will impact anything, but why not?
I agree not anything new makes sense, but if it is something special, I think it is OK.
She should be able to add info on the WM admissions portal. Application Status Portal | William & Mary
Thank you for your advice. I will let her decide - which means likely no email. And that is completely fine!
I have seen you on at least one other forum - I think it was a Wake Forest forum. I attended Wake for Graduate School and my daughter is currently awaiting RD decision. I can’t remember it your child had applied there or not.
Thank you again.
He did! He had great visits at both William & Mary and Wake Forest so he ended up applying to both.
Yes - I agree. Very best to your son. Really cant go wrong with either school!
W&M is my top choice right now (applying ED this year) and both my parents went to Wake… guess it’s the appeal of the sorta smallish liberal arts vibes. I would be applying to Wake as well but I grew up in Winston-Salem so it would just feel too weird moving back to my hometown for college.
My son was deciding between Wake and WM. He’s now very happy at WM.
My S24 applied to both, and they do have some notable overlapping virtues. But on the other hand, I think they also have pretty different vibes! The cost difference can also be substantial depending on your circumstances.
So ultimately my S24 both personally liked better and got a better offer from W&M (although in the end he chose another college entirely). But for sure for some kids, having a preference like that is going to make total sense.
