My metro cards arrived today. I was worried that they wouldn’t arrive in time. Received this as part of an email and thought I would share. This pertains to the national March but may also be something to think about for the local ones as well.

There are TWO very critical updates which came out late last night from National, and are different than information which has been shared up to this point regarding BACKPACKS and SIGNS.
- Backpacks ARE NOT allowed.
- Signs ARE allowed BUT they CANNOT be on any wooden sign holders/metal poles/handled objects. Cardboard sign posts are encouraged.

I now have two pages of quotes as possible ideas for my sign. Need to get my posterboard (or foam board) and find cardboard tubes before they are sold out. Am debating wearing a sandwich board vs. carrying a doublesided sign. I want to take my camera so I can shoot pics, so it would be nice to have my hands free. May borrow DH’s humongous down coat so I can use the internal pockets for my phone, charger, etc. since backpacks may or may not be ok. (I have been to marches before and knapsacks weren’t a problem, but that was pre-9/11.

Yes, am going to the DC march – but I just saw this on a DC TV station link – “Backpacks and bags exceeding size restrictions (18” by 13” by 7”)” are not allowed." Sounds like a string sack or small backpack would be OK. Am trying to fins the original source for this list, but have not yet been successful. (It’s not on the WMW website, though I have seen it replicated with the backpack size on other state pages.)
@CountingDown where do you get a cardboard tube? Also, you may not need that big puffy down coat as the long range forecast is predicting weather in the mid 50’s for DC that day. Keeping my finger’s crossed. Here is the info we received regarding bags from our state organizers.
Q: Can I bring my backpack/bag to the march?
A: Please note all bags may be subject to search. Backpacks are not permitted. Bags should be no larger than 8”x6”x4”. Specifically for people who would like to bring meals, each marcher is permitted one additional 12”x12”x6” plastic or gallon bag. For marchers who have medical needs or for mothers who need baby bags or breast pumps, one clear bag or backpack no larger than 17″x12″x6″ will be permitted and subject to search (colored transparent bags are not permitted). Do not bring anything that can be construed as a weapon, including signage with any kind of handle (e.g. a sharpened wooden stick). We recommend also checking with your bus company if your bus will be secured during the march and if you can leave larger belongings in the bus, rather than carrying them all day.

@doschicos I thought of that but wonder if they would be strong enough. I see Staples has mailing tubes. They might work.
@Knitkneelionmom Some of the larger, better quality wrapping paper have pretty sturdy tubes. I guess its a matter of finding the right ones because some are flimsy. I thought about the mailing tubes but many are pretty short and also tend to have a wider circumference that doesn’t seem as ideal for holding aloft. I have small hands.
Going to Lowes to see if they have 2" diameter, 48" long tubes. Amazon results were mixed. Packing tubes should be sturdy enough, but will require ducl tape to attach.
The wrapping paper I bought from one of those overpriced school fundraisers 20 years ago may be sacrificed! Those tubes are nicer than the usual.
