Brutal way to end the game!
So ugly. Japan won’t be so lucky Sunday.

tragic
the US looked fantastic yesterday against Germany… no chance the PK against the US would be a red card. That would’ve been the worst decision of the tournament by far (which says a lot, unfortunately).
If the U.S. plays like that again on Sunday we will win.
England… wow. What a way to go out. Dangerous things can happen when you kick it back towards your own goal.
also, some unfortunate commentating today… “the contact started outside the area but then continued into the area so the PK was the right call” <— that is completely, 100%, incorrect. Fortunately they have that referee consultant (whoever he is) to discuss the calls with and he set them straight, but these announcers should know the rules, ESPECIALLY if they are former players! yikes.
During the game the announcers said that it would have been a legitimate PK if it were active holding that continued on into the area not just contact.
Looking forward to Sunday rematch.
Should the US team be concerned with the Japan team long passes?
I was half watching the game with the sound turned off and talking to my son on the phone (who called to wish me a safe trip home to England tomorrow). I was like “we scored!!”, and then he put me right. Wow!
Humm …
Some rules apply
If an outfield player who intentionally blocks a shot to goal with his hands will be punished with a red card. The same punishment is given to a defender who fouls an attacker when there is no other defender between him and the goalkeeper. If an attacker is fouled and there is still another defender before the goalie, the punishment will only be a yellow card.
The penalty given to the U.S. was also highly questionable.
What luck!. I’ve got a business trip to Japan in time to watch the game there!
Educated fans, please tell me, what was the woman who kicked the OG trying to do? Was she trying to kick it would of bounds and it went in the wrong direction? Did she think her goalie would get it? I kept watching it over and over and couldn’t figure out where she was trying to go with that kick.
She was trying to kick it out of bounds. She just got the wrong angle. How devastating.
On another note, did you know that Sasic was the only German soccer player, male or female, to ever miss a PK in a World Cup competition? That’s going back to 1930. And this is a player with 6 goals in this WC.
That had to be one of the most brutal endings to a game I have seen, the person who kicked the ball was devastated and so was the keeper. It is funny, watching the end of the game, when they highlighted the Japanese coach I don’t think he was all that happy that it ended that way, looking at his face, I would bet in the locker room he would be telling them something like you got lucky, you play like that against the US you will embarass yourselves, etc (coaches being what they are:). I have seen clips of US football players running the wrong way, all kinds of dumb mistakes (Bill Buckner in the 86 series, the umpire who screwed up Andres Galaraga’s perfect game). but I think that is the saddest one, not because I wanted England or Japan to win, I just feel bad for them, to be the cause of a loss with a blooper like that hurts.
I felt so bad for the British team, and especially the goalie and the poor player who kicked that ball, it happens, it was like the penalty kicks I saw in the tournament that when wide or over the goal, it has to feel horrible.
I would not call it a blooper. It was a regular defensive play that took an unfortunate direction. A blooper would be a backpass in an empty net or a poor decision. This was neither. Deviated balls and unfortunate bounces are part of soccer. It was not a dumb mistake but more like a DB trying to intercept a pass and hitting it in the hands of a wide receiver.

I don’t know if anybody is watching the Fox Sports 1 studio shows about the womens world cup. There was an hour show on with Carli Lloyd and O’hara part of the show. People in the crowd were holding up large faces of athletes.
Near the end of the show, Eric Wynalda tried to get the rest of the studio hosts to dance. They did a soccer play.
At the end of the show, the cameraman filmed a close up of my wife. She did a tiny dance move. My wife is usually very reserved.
She was on tv for 2 or 3 seconds. A great shot of her. She looks damn good for her age. If you watched the show carefully at the end, you know what my blonde wife looks like.
fun! What happens in Vancouver stays in Vancouver.
Cool! Now we need a shot of Dstark on TheVoice!
I assume she was trying to block it from continuing toward the middle, presumably out of bounds.
This is why it is very dangerous when you get the ball behind the defense. When the defenders are running towards their own goal, it is very hard to make a good play on it.
if you didn’t catch the 3rd place game today, you missed a great soccer game.
