World Cup 2026

Such fun watching the USA game with friends at our town’s watch party! Great to see kids (and adults) so excited. On to Seattle!

I wonder what kind of game USA will get from Belgium. For 80 minutes last night they looked like crap–listless, trying to dribble through 3 guys close to the goal (take a shot for goodness sake!!). Don’t know how many of the 9 lives that cat has left. I think Senegal would have given ‘Murica a better game. Guess we’ll see.

What did you all think of that USA red card last night? I think the penalty of a red card (player is out for the next game) is pretty harsh for what looked like a very questionable foul.

I think that was a bad call. Yellow, fine if you must, but I don’t think he showed intent at all.

I also think the call was bad.

Extremely harsh.

I follow the dictionary (don’t laugh, it’s an interesting follow!) on Facebook. This is what they posted this morning:

The commentators were saying the slo-mo made it look worse than in real time, but I think it also made it totally obvious it was not intentional at all.

I thought it was a really good sign that far from collapsing, being a man down seemed to energize them. The mental game is so critical, and this team has been playing with heart. That will be what makes a difference for them. I hope they continue this mentality into the next game.

That red card was a bad call. Even in a slow motion, everyone can clearly see that the US player did not intend to do harm to the opponent. It was accidental. The injury was bad but without intent, a yellow card would be appropriate.

If I were a US team, I would appeal the decision.

It was total BS. My H was screaming at the TV. I also hope the US tries to appeal and we get Balogun back for the next game but I think it’s un-appealable by rule.

I think in general the VAR isn’t working as intended.

I don’t know much, well anything, about how it’s supposed to work, but the commentators were saying “this is not what VAR is supposed to be used for”

the game that unites the world for a reason

So they can still do that - appeal the decision?

If they gave him any extension on it, that would be OUTRAGEOUS and border on some really questionable motives.

The collective dislike of Gianni Infantino? :joy:

Look like the current rules do not allow an appeal.

One game suspension is bad enough. If he got an extended suspension, a lot of fans (not just the US fans but any fan who like a fair game) won’t be happy with FIFA.

Fox just announced last night’s game was the most-watched English-language match in history — 24.4 million. That’s a lot of people! For comparison, the Super Bowl is watched by more than 120M viewers in the United States every year.

Wow, that’s amazing. I did say to my DH that I thought the further the US got in the tournament, the more Americans may take an interest in the game. It’s hardly unknown here of course (unlike say cricket), but it’s nowhere near the level of popularity it is in many other countries. A long way to go to reach superbowl viewership though….

Edit: USMNT page just posted that viewership was 31.9m?

But how many of them are watching for things other than the sport? The SB commercials and half time show?

World Cup doesn’t have that! We are watching (at least I am) purely for the excitement of the sport.

Maybe including non-English broadcasts, such as Telemundo? :woman_shrugging:
