You just can't make this stuff up! The crazy news of the day thread.

^^^Those kinds of stories always blow me away.

When I was a teenager our neighbors had 8 kids. All their names began with an “O”. She had her ninth child without knowing she was pregnant. To look at her you would not know she was pregnant. She went to the hospital with severe stomach cramps and came home with her ninth child whom they named Oland because they couldn’t think of any more names that began with “O”. Whenever I read these stories I always think of her and I still think how could you not know.

When I was in college, by ex-BF’s room mate and his GF had a baby. No one knew she was pregnant. I am not sure when she learned she was pregnant.

The couple did marry and last heard the couple and the child were happily living in CA. My ex-BF was named the baby’s godfather. The couple was Christian, The Godfather is Jewish.

Seriously, how do these women not realize they’re pregnant?

Do they continue to get their period? Are they already heavy, so gaining 20 to 30 to 40 pounds isn’t noticeable? Do they not get morning sickness?

I always wonder how they miss baby movement. I know some babies are more active than others, but how often does it really happen that a baby doesn’t move AT ALL?

I was watching a show about plastic surgery screw ups, and a young woman related that this happened to her. But eventually she admitted that deep down she knew, she just tried very hard to convince herself otherwise.

I can sort of understand not realizing you’re pregnant simply because I’ve read about so many instances of it. But not knowing you’re pregnant with TRIPLETS? And this woman already had two children, so it’s not like she was unfamiliar with the symptoms!

^^^wishful thinking? Denial?

Some people do get their period during pregnancy, or have non-pregnant periods so irregularly that there’s not much point in keeping track, or just don’t keep close track. Some people gain little or no weight (or even lose weight) during pregnancy. I’ve had a couple gas bubbles or muscle twitches that I’d swear feel just like a 28-week baby kicking. An anterior placenta makes kicks much less noticeable. If you can have late-discovered ovarian cancer (somewhat common even among women who go to the doctor repeatedly to complain about symptoms consistent with ovarian cancer), you can have a late-discovered pregnancy.

Regarding the triplets, 12 pounds of baby is not that much more than 8 or 9 pounds of baby in terms of likelihood of discovery.

Clearly, this is of greatest importance and must be addressed since SF has no other real pressing issues at hand.

All this, and I’m not even thru the first cup of coffee.

OMG. We used to shop at that Safeway, and our friends’ kids had jobs there.

Beauty pageants and ethics:

The USVI are in uproar. Their newly crowned representative to the Miss Universe turns out to be a serial pageant contestant who moves to different areas to compete. She had previously competed in Utah and Florida. The USVI pageant requires a minimum of six months residency. She moved there immediately after competing in January 2019 in Utah.

Turns out, none of the Top Five were women with local connections. All the local women were shut out.

What do you think? Ok on a technicality or another example of mainlanders using the islands for their own gain?

Read all about it in the news:
https://viconsortium.com/breaking-news/outrage-grips-virgin-islanders-as-miss-universe-u-s-virgin-islands-is-won-by-someone-with-no-ties-to-territory/

Hey! I know this is trivial but there was a call out for more action on the board! And more seriously, it taps into the islanders justified feelings of grievance of being priced out of the housing market, many jobs being low paid in service and tourism, and lack of economic opportunity.

If the USVI pageant community has an issue, they should work to change the rules. If a contestant is following the rules, that’s not her problem. Considering that US Senators and Representatives only need to be a resident of their state when elected, who wins Miss USVI is a big old “who cares?” in my book.

Yes, that is why i put it in the silly news section. At first glance and to mainlanders it seems ridiculous that there is handwringing going on.

However, also in the spirit of the thread about the lingering effects of racism and slavery, there is nuance to the handwringing.

Crime in cyberspace? Hmmm… Cybercrime in space!

https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/how-a-bitter-divorce-battle-on-earth-led-to-claims-of-a-crime-in-space/

Yikes.

Cybercrime in space gets headlines, but when it’s an estranged spouse checking your bank account using the log in and password that you provided, the term “cybercrime” seems a stretch. Rude, counter-productive invasion of privacy to be certain. Unfortunate because I liked the public face of Anne McLain very much and used many of the astronaut corps members as role models for my students.

I’m sure she is now less resentful that the apartment complex management forced her to get that poop tag!

And this is soooo cute!

The Pacific Northwest sounds like so much more than here in Tampa- at least when reading the local paper. Thanks for the posts.
