Mazel Tov to everyone admitted into SU! And to those still waiting to hear, be patient and good luck.

I am here to answer any questions, doubts, and/or concerns you may of the University. I will give you the most honest answer that is to the best of my knowledge. Having been here for 3 years I consider myself very knowledgeable on all aspects of Syracuse University. I would like to make your transition from HS to SU as easy possible so fire away with the questions! Since I don’t work with or for admissions, I can’t really chance you.

I will start by offering the course catalog to anyone curious about majors, requirements for classes, and overall academics.

Hi, thanks for offering to do this (: Do you know of anyone who’s in the Honors program? I’m planning on joining and I’ve looked at the website in depth but I wanted an actual’s student’s perspective on the program, the classes/coursework etc. Also if you buy season tickets for football and basketball, are you guaranteed a seat in the student section or no?

I know about two people in the program. It’s obviously much more rigorous than the courses taken by regular students but is there something particular you would like to know on the program. Also, whether or not you buy season tickets, you’re put in student sections regardless.

Hi nashvilleknight,

I’m familiar only a little bit with Bandier. It’s a great program. Someone that I know just dropped out of Syracuse to pursue his passion within the music & entertainment industry. lol. Is there anything you’d like to know in particular?

Heres an example of what the Bandier program put together in the past:

I was wondering if you’re allowed to change your major because school starts? Or if you just take GE classes your freshman year so it wont really make a difference. Thanks!

Hahaha really?! I know school isn’t for everyone when you want that career. Well that’s great as long as they networked a bunch and actually are doing something within that field. How many years did he stay at Syracuse before he dropped out?
I honestly just wanted to know how well Syracuse helps the kids network, take in opportunities, etc including internships and all that jazz in that direction because I know there’s other programs like Bandier that are just as selective in the North East area. :)

you should start knocking out your core classes freshman year, which will give you sometime to start thinking about what your major will be. Usually after the first semester, students get a really good idea of what their major will be and thus start taking classes for it the following semester.

nashvilleknight,

He is my year (a junior) and will not spend his senior year in school. I’m assuming to school helped put him in contact with some people. But Ill go ahead and assume also that the preparation and opportunities provided are top notch as well.

How does SU’s civil engineering program rank against other programs in the nation? And how rigorous is the course load? Any other information you have will be Great too! Thanks!

im kinda slipping up a little bit… ive dropped from an “A” to a “B” in Astronomy and from a “B” to a “C” in AP Government… i was wondering if SU will take any action on it or if i have nothing to worry about… just dont fail… thanks

I received my award letter from SU a couple days ago and I wasn’t too pleased with it. SU gave me some good money and I’m grateful but I’m gonna have to depend on scholarships and loans to pay the rest. My mom is telling me to go to another school but SU is my dream school. I have no clue what to do.

Civil Engineering at SU is less rigorous than all of the other engineering programs but you’re still going to have to work hard. I have friends that have told me classes such as “Vibrations” and “Materials” have been the most challenging for them thus far. I’ve also heard great things on the ranking of the program but I’m not sure exactly where it ranks or stacks up compared to other programs.

Hi pizzahead12,

I slacked hard on Math B but the University didn’t revoke my admission. I think you’re fine. SU isn’t too anal with grades slipping. The University understands that students have to juggle grades on top of graduation requirements, finalizing college decisions, prom logistics, summer jobs etc. As long as you’re not falling below a C, you shouldn’t worry too much.

Hi mdbjr,

VPA students are welcome to apply to the program. I really cant tell you how rigorous the transmedia program is at SU. I haven’t taken a course in it nor do I know anyone who is in the program.

If you complete classes such as COM 107 and others and maintain a 3.6 in addition to 30 credits, you can get into Newhouse as early as your 1st semester sophomore year.

I know they do the processing and notification over winter break or the summer. Ive heard of students that have completed 30 credits by the end of their first semester freshman year (AP/IB credit, summer start credits etc.)

They don’t provide those figures but realize you’re competing with students not only within SU but at other colleges as well.

Where can I find out how many undergrad students are enrolled in the Civil Engineering program? My S was accepted and SU is his first choice right now.

Hi,
My son is in the Engineering Department as a Freshman. Mechancial /Aerospace. He was accepted to eight schools last year, and he decided on Syracuse and loves it! I find the Engineering Department to be very helpful with any questions you might have. I have another son at another school, Virginia Tech, and they are much less hands on. Also great Alumni and placement stats post graduation. Good luck with your decision.

I was wondering about the three decisions waves. With each wave are your chances of getting in slimmer? I haven’t gotten a decision yet and a lot of others found out they got in last Friday…
