@ House, how is the work/study process? Does my D have to wait for Syracuse to contact her or does she needs to apply directly.

I saw some postings for employment for the work/study program, but she hasn’t received any notification from the university. Can she apply without the university contacting her for this process?

Does Syracuse send out to new attending students, some novelties, like a TShirt or pencils, or something like that?

Some of my friends have receive those kind of trickets. :-(

I don’t believe SU does that. It usually seems to be from smaller universities/colleges. That’s what my D saw with her acceptances.

Thanks Lulu, can you tell me more about Syracuse. If you have had experience with the university. What do you like or dislike.

CMIRA003,

I think upon arrival and settling down they’ll give you bumper stickers, free t-shirts before “Home to the Dome,” and a bunch of other stuff to show school pride.

Make sure your D attends Home to the Dome. That’s where I met a few of my close friends. ;)

Thanks House!! I will make sure she does go to the HOME TO THE DOME. School Pride? She already has that since she applied to Syracuse. She fell in love with the school since the interview and the way the school represents treated her.

It will be a very “bi-polar” moment. Happy for her to start a new book with her life, and sad because she will not be close to home. Water flowing!

Hi, I’m going to be a rising junior in high school this next school year. Syracuse has been my number one ever since I was younger. It has the programs I’m looking for, great parties, etc.

But something that bothers me is the roomate selection, I heard its completly randomn. I’m a very athletic person, who lives, eats and breathes sports. I’m worried I would end up with someone whos the complete opposite. And we just wont work out together. And what is exactly meant by the “learning community” thing I hear about for dorming. I’ve noticed that up at SU a lot of times the athletes room together. Do they all pick the same learning community?

The roommate selection process isnt completely random. There is a preference and personality sheet you fill out when housing selection time comes around. If you indicate that you’re very into sports somewhere under the “add comments” box then you should be fine. I would also advise you to go in with a very open mind.

Learning communities are enrichment programs within dorms that helps engage students with their neighbors/floormates.

ahh okay thanks house of london, you have no idea how much I love this thread you made. It’s answered a lot of questions of mine.

Another question and this might seem odd, but I’m curious I have friends who are student-athletes up at SU for the “popular” teams. And I noticed they all party a lot. But they also go to bars and drink even though they are underage. Are the bars up there really that easy to get servered alcohol or do they have great fakes? Or is the fact that they play for a prominet team?

What is the best way to get books? Can used book or rented books be obtained through the SU bookstore? Isn’t there a private bookstore just off campus?

The SU bookstore includes both used books and new books. The used books are obviously cheaper. There is also the private bookstore in Marshall square mall (2 blocks away) where you could also purchase your books. Most books are the same price and some you would fine at a more expensive or cheaper price.

Check out Chegg.com if you’re thinking of renting your textbooks instead. It’s considerably cheaper.

I would also look at bookstore.syr.edu to find out in advance how much your books for the fall will cost you. You would either have to be signed up for your classes already or at least know which classes you would be registering for this fall.

[bookstore.syr.edu] Textbook -> Search Textbook information -> Find Course Textbook

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the clear answer. Very helpful.

@SYRbound nice username…

Can you answer questions about transferring to syracuse?

Will try my best. Go for it.

Hi! Hoping you can answer a question for me. My daughter is an incoming freshman. I’ve been scouring the orientation information, including the welcome book, and I can’t see anything that indicates the students will be put into organized orientation groups, with group leaders, to help them get to all the events. Can you explain a little bit about what orientation is like? Do they have to navigate this on their own? My son was placed in an orientation group when he moved into Villanova two years ago, and they did all the activities together. Any help is much appreciated.

Orientation events such as home to the dome would be arranged more so with the dormitory your daughter will be placed. I was placed in Shaw and my RA would update me frequently about orientation events and activities. Your daughter will also be getting emails pamphlets, and more information on where she should go and how to prepare for orientation.

Hope that helps.

Is it true that you need 3 years of Foreign language to get accepted?

What kinds of discounts and deals around town do Syracuse students get with their ID ?

If you dont meet some of the admission requirements do you still have a chance at being accepted through ED?
