I love garland’s list. Love the Modern Lovers, obscure and arcane as they are. Radio on!

Sorry to say, but people have been recommending WAY too much in the way of boilerplate stuff.

There’s SO much to explore in the genres of alternative rock and modern classical.

Please explore the music of Arvo Part, Radiohead, The National, Max Richter, Johann Johannsson, Arcade Fire, Stars of the Lid, PJ Harvey, The Decemberists, etc. while you’re downloading Bruce and Bono and Berry and all the other tried-and-true (and somewhat tired) icons.

Gondaline,
Enlighten us, post a list. Many of us have mentioned elsewhere that we enjoy being introduced to new music by friends, our kids, etc. Although judging others on a list of ten songs they offer for consideration hardly makes sense. Most people have very wide ranging tastes. A list of ten is sometimes a list of ten and not much more. Rarely representative of the entirety of any collection spanning 1,000.

Any 10 of these 20 (though I’m dating myself here):

For What Its Worth Buffalo Springfield

Hi all – I haven’t been around this board since my daughter left for her freshman year this Sept, but I was missing her (and remembering the stress of this time last year) so I thought I’d check in. Happy to see such a fun topic! My top 25 most played songs look a lot like Osprey’s, but I thought I’d suggest some of my newer favorites (newer being a relative term, last 10 years or so). None of these are “essential” per se; just some of my newer favorites:

Bon Iver, Skinny Love

The Avett Brothers, I and Love and You (whole album is great, but this song in particular)

“Sorry to say, but people have been recommending WAY too much in the way of boilerplate stuff.”

My tastes are certainly shaped by growing up listening to top 40 radio stations and the popular groups of my day (I went to college in the mid 80s) but I don’t see a need to be ashamed of or apologize for it. I’m a huge Beatles person too; if that’s trite, so be it!
