I like to keep an eye on Sub Pop records for the young Seattle bands. I It’s 13 songs, but the new album from The Head and the Heart is on my playlist right now:

I Will Follow You into the Dark – Death Cab for Cutie
Love Song – Sara Bareilles
Mad World – Michael Andrews & Gary Jules
Twist in my Sobriety – Tanita Tikaram
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree – KT Tunstall
Wade in the Water – Eva Cassidy
Angel and Delilah --Eliza Gilkyson
Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels) – Jim Croce
Sail --AWOLNATION
Take Me to Church – Hozier

Here are just a couple of doo-wop songs that I dig. There is some good stuff on your lists, but I’m glad I don’t fit into the every adult format.

What I like is seeing what newer works people like who like the same stuff as I do. Pandora used to work that way, but it doesn’t anymore.

I want the “If you like the Kinks try…” suggest listening to The Black Keys, or the Lumineers not the Beatles. I know the Beatles. I want new music!

That said, lots of good suggestions here that are missing from my files - good to be reminded what I still don’t have on mp3s.

I am going to join those who are suggesting songs that weren’t already classics when we all graduated from high school. That’s not to denigrate those songs, which I love, too, but there are others worth listening to. Pretty randomly:

Paul Simon – Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes (I think no one has suggested anything from Graceland yet, which is crazy)
– Born At The Right Time
Wilco – I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
– The Late Greats
Old 97s – Murder Or A Heart Attack (best cat song ever)
Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up
– Where The Stars Go Blue
Holly Cole – Cry If You Want To
Lucinda Williams – Passionate Kisses
– Too Cool To Be Forgotten
Juana Molina – Micael
Raphael Saadiq – 100-Yard Dash
Bjork – Venus As A Boy
Counting Crows – A Murder Of One
B=52s – Love Shack

Heard It In A Love Song - The Marshall Tucker Band
Brokedown Palace or Ripple - Grateful Dead
Words Get In The Way - Gloria Estefan
Walk Of Life - Dire Straits
No More “I Love You’s” - Annie Lennox
Us and Them or Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago
Woman - John Lennon
With Or Without You - U2
We Are The World - U.S.A. for Africa

I’d had Diamonds on the soles of her shoes on the first version of my post which I managed to lose through stupidity! Forgot it when I was reconstituting it.

I like Counting Crows, and my youngest kept playing me something that reminded me of them, but I can’t remember what it is. I should see if he remembers what it was. Though mostly we were listening to his Arab rock/rap music. I liked a lot of it. Not as rappy as American stuff. (A little softer edged.)

I listened to the singer-songwriter/Americana/cityfolk station in the 1990s, but at some point switched to listening to NPR, so I’m less up on recent music.

JHS–love your list!
How the heck did I leave off Love Shack???

And I hesitate to say this since it’s controversial, but I think Eminem is pretty talented.
I have a friend who says to her teenage son, “If he just cleaned up some of his language, the kids could study him in AP English.”

Good lists! I think I have every one of the songs on westcoastmomof2’s, bclintonk’s and jhs’s lists on my iPhone right now.

I was thinking the same thing, but then again I don’t think anyone has suggested a Dylan song yet either. So I thought I’d make a “CRAZY OMISSIONS” list of artists.

A good resource for OP might be Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Artists, as well as Pitchfork.com.
