Congrats to everyone who has won! And hoping all of you that haven’t heard yet hear good news soon.
I honestly don’t really understand how they judge…there doesn’t seem to be any method to the madness, as far as I can tell. The winners have seemed all over the place–some stuff I’ve been really impressed by, some I’m just left scratching my head.
I guess that’s how contests work, though?
Congrats again!

I know the art results have come out for the Mid-Carolina region, but I haven’t heard anything about writing…if they have come out, no one I know won. D:

I’m guessing that people who don’t win anything don’t get a consolation letter, or any letter in general? ._.
I just hope they actually received the forms. I get a bit paranoid about these things :P

You would think that the Judges could at least email our results.

Okay, I’m confused (like most parents!). My son entered his paintings in the Massachusetts regional competition (Boston Globe). He got email last week that the 5 paintings he entered as individual works all won Gold Keys … which is great, of course, 5 Gold Keys is awesome, but why have they judged the individual works and not the portfolio as a whole – why are these two things separate? And when do the portfolios get judged? If anyone knows the answers to these mysteries and wants to tell me that would be great. Thanks!

Did your child enter in each painting as an individual work? To win a portfolio award, you have to be a senior, enter into the portfolio category, write about your vision, etc. The process is a little different, and I’m fairly certain that they don’t usually split up a portfolio and enter pieces into their respective individual categories. I hope this helps!

@Mathdork, my son entered 5 paintings as individual works (they all got the Gold Keys) but also entered a portfolio of 8 paintings which seems not to have been judged yet. He is a senior and wrote the artist statement, etc but it seems as if the portfolio has not yet been judged. I just wondered why the individual paintings would be judged before the portfolio. That’s why I’m confused. Oh well – I’m sure it will all be judged eventually, for better or worse. Thanks!

It’s possible that the portfolio didn’t win an award–I think they only notify you if you win. It would seem odd, of course, for the individual paintings all to win gold keys and nothing for the portfolio, but who knows?

Someone (an art teacher from another high school) told me whole potfolios haven’t yet been judged, just individual works. I thought it was odd too, but apparently that was true in Massachusetts, at least as of last week. It’s a mysterious process, but I agree that if he’d won five Gold Keys on the same work that was in the portfoilio it would be very sketchy if the portfolio didn’t get any recognition, but who knows, it’s a different pool of work …

Heard for CA Writing today!

Still waiting for art though… Anyone get any word for that yet?

Hi. I’m Kristen, a senior, and I just recently found out that Scholastics is for writing as well. In my school it seemed to be broadcast as an art competition, and I had never heard of it involving writing until this year.

While I know the writing part isn’t new, I was wondering if the part about publication for the novel writing category is. I haven’t been able to find the works of previous winners of the novel writing category, so this is a question I have for you all.

My second question is, since there is a special deadline and address for the novel writing category, is the novel only submitted directly to that NY address and not to anything regional?

Here’s what the California Writing regional facebook page posted about an hour ago:
“California Writing Awards Gold & Silver Keys have been selected & notified by email! We will NOT post which award(s) students have won until after the ceremony on February 10 in Sacramento. Award winners who cannot attend the ceremony will be mailed their awards, as will all Merit Award winners. A complete list of California’s winners will be posted online by the end of February.”

Are Gold and Silver Keys the only awards for CA? If so, then I didn’t win anything I already checked my email.

Also, I have a question: If we had a regional competition (CA), were we allowed to enter in the national one (region-at-large?) instead? I don’t know which one is more competitive. Ahhhh the regrets…haha.

Edit: They apparently also have Honorable Mentions…I don’t know what’s going on with those.

@virologynerd

we can commiserate I didn’t get the email - I’m mildly surprised, since I received a national gold medal for my work last year. So it goes.

do you, by any chance, have the link to their facebook page?

It seems the judges are really subjective, hope they recognize what actual good work is.

Ahhh I’m sorry That’s amazing that you got such a great award last year though. This was my first (and last) year entering.

Here’s the link to their fb page: [California Writes! - Non-Profit Organization - Founded: 2010 | Facebook](Redirecting...)

thanks for the link :)

meh, disappointment is temporary. i guess this concludes the (somewhat) long wait!

Can anyone answer my question above?

@mathdork: No problem. You have a good attitude about it. I personally am not that disappointed because I was not expecting anything. I actually forgot about it until that thing came up on my fb wall! Haha. Good thing I joined the group :)

Kristen, did you try searching for your specific regional guidelines on the Scholastic website? They might have a mailing address under one of the FAQs or something.

@ VirologyNerd: You had to win regional first in order to qualify for nationals.

BTW, do they judge the pieces by 9th & 10th graders separately than from 11th & 12th graders or are all highschoolers all meshed into one category and 9th graders compete with 12th graders?

Also, I’m kind of confused. My friend from Southern California received the email to the regional celebration in Sacramento. BUT it says on the website that the regional celebration for Southern Cali is in UC Davis / Bowers Museum / etc.

Congrats to everyone who won regional and cheers to everyone who didn’t.
