2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

@ randomazn14

I clicked around the site a bit, but no I didn’t find anything.

Ahh I see Woahgosh. Thanks for the info!

My experience with the Scholastic awards is that they are a really great opportunity for young writers/artists to get their work out there…and that it’s VERY subjective and not a reflection of your ability if you don’t win.
Also, everyone is ALWAYS confused. This year, I had to help a teacher at my school organize the whole thing… XD They’re not exactly the most clear/well organized thing, but hey.

I don’t know much about other regions, though. Mine is weird and has a November deadline, then lets us know in mid-Jan if we won, then has awards in Feb, then of course all the national hoopla in April.

Kristen, from what I understand, there is no regional submission of novels - you just send it straight of to NYC. But as someone mentioned, I’d email them. They’re pretty good about responding pretty promptly. :)

Yay!!! I don’t know if any of you remember, but I’m the one who had the issues with the payments… well, I guess something got worked out because I received an email today! I was totally shocked; I had resigned myself that my submissions would not even be looked at and lo and behold I’m receiving an award.

Has anyone ever been to the CA award ceremony before? What is it like? Is it worth it to go to Sactown?

Also, does anyone know how many students receive gold and silver keys vs. how many submit?

This was my first and last chance to win something, so I’m pretty happy!

Congrats, quomodod!

According to the website:
“Across the country, more than 165,000 works will be reviewed by our panels of arts professionals. More than 50,000 students will earn Honorable Mention, Silver Keys and Gold Keys in regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2011. Works designated as Gold Keys will be forwarded for national-level review in February 2011.”

In the end, “During the 2011 program year, more than 50,000 students will be recognized in their local communities, and 1,300 students will receive National Awards. Students and teachers will be celebrated at regional ceremonies, public events and the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall.”

So a lot.
:O

:D Which, of course, means you have even more reason to be proud of your award! What did you win for?

Haha idk about 30% win some kind of award… but I’m hopeful for a gold key! I don’t know what I won or what I won for because they haven’t told us yet! We find out at the ceremony/banquet, which is Feb. 10. Good luck to everyone who’s waiting.

For people who entered writing to RAL- when you log in and go to “manage works” now, does it say “Category Closed” under “actions”? And also, mine still has the button "complete your registration " even though I already filled everything out and sent the money. Did I submit incorrectly or is this the case with everyone’s accounts?

lgsr10, my daughter sees what you see…she wonders if she submitted correctly too. I think your OK though. Last year RAL gold key list came out in March. This contest is a great forum for young artists and it’s sad that some on here bash its integrity because they didn’t win. Stop obsessing, just because you didn’t win doesn’t mean what you wrote isn’t great but it also doesn’t mean other students work that did win is less than yours and the judges are ‘horrible’ for choosing it. My daughter is a talented artist who has won several gold keys and national awards in this contest in the past but she also has work that she thought was better than the work she won awards for that didn’t even get recognized…does it matter…no. Just believe in your self and keep putting your work out there…just sayin’.

By the way…does anyone know how many people in each regional win gold keys? Or what approximate percentage, anyway?

For people in the Region-at-Large

I went on the website and found this under the submission guidelines for writing:

Young writers earning regional-level recognition will receive Gold Key Awards, the symbol of excellence in The Awards. These regional Award recipients will be notified by mail and will receive Gold Key lapel pins and certificates of recognition by February 2011. Gold Key works advance to national adjudication. Writers who receive national recognition will be notified in late-March 2011.

Notice that it says by February 2011, not March. So gold key winners in the RAL should be notified very soon, right? Or have RAL winners already been notified?

Oh. They called me this past Saturday and emailed me the info if that helps at all. Good luck to everyone still awaiting results for their region!

Okay. I’m kinda freaking out. I’m not sure if I entered at RAL or not but Missouri’s dealine was 1/14 and the regionial awards ceremony is on 3/4. But I’m not exactly sure when I’m supposed to hear anything by. I found out about this only 4 days before the deadline and it was compltely hectic.

Question…Does anyone know if they judged the poetry by the collection or individual?

I submitted one personal memoir/essay, one short short story, 3 poetry collections that had two poems in 2 of them and 3 poems in one of the collections.

An earlier post says they judge by the individual poem.

Also, can you guys post your region every time you discuss results? Every time someone says “I heard from X today!”, I freak out a little, and I think others do, too :)

If you google Scholastic Art & Writing RAL 2011 gold key you will find two sites that list the recipients of art gold and silver keys from Lander University.

I know the website says by February for RAL but last year…really…it was almost March for writing award notification on the regional level. We live in SC, maybe this year will be different but I know my daughter all but forgot about this contest when she was notified in 2010.

I got a Gold Key, just got the e-mail! This is the first writing competition I entered, kinda exciting. :)

Okay, I’m not sure what the Region-at-Large means, but we’re in Massachusetts and my son got 5 Gold Keys for individual paintings, and he seems to think that portfolios will be judged in the next few days (still can’t understand why these things are separated, but whatever). He was notified by email and the list of winners was released to art teachers. People in our region whose work didn’t win did not get any email – they just had to figure out they didn’t win when they didn’t hear otherwise (a little sketcy but that’s how it is here anyway).

hi, I didn’t find out about this until a day before the deadline last year (!!!adkjladsfj) but this year, since I’m a senior, i entered an art portfolio and got a gold key! i’m happy.

but now I’m also confused. The letter I got says that there is an awards ceremony and I have to get all my work matted and get it there in less than two weeks…is this ceremony optional? Can I just not go? Do I have to tell someone I’m not going? (in philadelphia, btw)

and they said that since i got a gold key I get stuff sent to the national thing, but they didn’t tell me if/when I find out from the national thing if I won anything…I saw people say here that if you don’t win they just don’t notify you, so if I don’t get notified do I assume it got sent but didn’t win? if it does win, when would I be notified?

i’m sorry, I really didn’t do extensive research on this before I entered…but I’m so happy I got an award!

wait, so are RAL results out yet for writing?

I think it depends on the region, right? Some come out before others.
