2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Wow. I plan to major in journalism. But have no experience writing it yet. I just love the style and being able to write about topics that could change someone’s thinking. My best writing style is persuasive but it hard to find scholarships for it.

Thanks Hunt. I wasn’t sure if it was worth mentioning. Yeah I beat over 200 people but at 20 people beat me.

Only 4 people received Gold Keys in my region, which I’m sure is a very low number. Does anyone know how many received Gold Medals and Silver Medals last year for Poetry (at nationals)?

^ About 150

Hello,

My name is Kristen, and I will be participating in this year’s competition. In the last stretch of writing before I submit my novel tonight, I realized I have some questions regarding format of the novel and the outline. They are as follows–

1) For the novel itself, I’ve gathered that it is supposed to be double-spaced and written in 12 point Times New Roman. But I was wondering, do we have a title page? A page that says the title and By: Kristen? Where should the title and author name be indicated if not?

2) As far as chapters go, are we allowed to have named our chapters? Is there any particular format for this?

3) For the outline, how should this be formatted? I know the limit is two pages, but how general should they be? Is there a particular format for this? Should it just outline major events, or should it have a brief overview of each chapter? Finally, should it cover the chapters that are being submitted?

4) As for shipping, should the work be stapled, put in a binder, hole punched, or just loose in the box? Should there be an order? (Outline on top of the title page on top of the novel?)

These are my questions, thank you so much.

– Kristen

Kristen, we had many of the same questions, but didn’t find any answers on the website. Here’s what my daughter did, right or wrong:

 1. She didn’t include a title page–she assumed that she shouldn’t include her name, as with the other Scholastic submissions, except on the registration sheet. She just put the title at the top of the first page.
 2. She just numbered her chapters, but I see no reason you couldn’t name them.
 3. She did a brief overview of each chapter, including the ones being submitted.
 4. We put the chapters in a big clip, the outline in a small paper clip, and then put them all in an envelope (which we Fed-Exed, since as we read the rules, it is supposed to be received no later than Friday).

Thank you. I was thinking I might work on it for one more day, can it be received any time on Friday as long as it’s on Friday? I’m just going to do overnight shipping then.

Just make sure you use a method that guarantees Friday delivery during the business day.

I’m also participating in the Novel entry. I’m not very confident that my writing will be delivered by Friday (I’m still in the editing stage). I emailed SAWA and I’m hoping they will get back to me today. Don’t forget, kristen, to send a submission fee and information, too.

Kristenoddity: For the novel writing contest, 1) It doesn’t have to be 12 point Times New Roman. I emailed them about the font and they said anything from 10-12 point and any font that’s readable (like Courier New, Tahoma, etc.) is good. My friend last year submitted a novel manuscript that was 12 point Courier and it won silver medal. As for the title page, I’m definitely adding one. You don’t have to, but it’s more professional in my opinion.

2) I don’t think they care if you name your chapters or not.

3) My friend who won silver key last year submitted an outline that was a query letter. There’s multiple ways you can write your outline though, so you don’t have to write it as a query.

4) There’s no order but they want it paperclipped or stapled.

Cheers!

So, I’m not sure if people already said this but all of the CA writing award results just came out. Earlier in this thread, I stated that I hadn’t gotten anything for my humor piece. Well, today I checked the merit award list on a whim and I received a merit award! Yay :)

This is ****ing me off… I submitted something to the writing section, got it in on time and everything, and I never received like an email or something saying “yeah, we go it” or any thing from Scholastic indicating that they got my submission. And I’m pretty sure I could have won something for it (at least an honorable mention) but I didn’t get anything in the mail… any ideas of what happened? Thanks for your help.

@yaintime21:

I wasn’t notified at all that I won anything. The regional affiliate just emailed my teacher that I won a gold key - I never got an email, or anything in the mail. You can check online now to see if you won a gold key, but for any other award, you should your teacher, or your regional affiliate.
If your teacher didn’t get anything, it’s possible that you didn’t win anything:/
If you really think you stood a shot at an award, several things could have gone wrong.
You could have:
i. Forgotten to include your signed submission forms
ii. Forgotten to include your fees
iii. Had the fees stolen in the mail
iv. The mail truck carrying your submission spontaneously combusted

does anyone know if they will post the national results on the website right at midnight?
because i have school the next day and it also happens to be the day i have to take our state graduation test, so i have nooooo idea how i’m going to concentrate that day not knowing D:

thanks so much! I’ll ask my teacher for some help. I looked online and I didn’t win anything. I thought my piece was pretty good, but I guess I’ll check with him to see what happened.

Hey everyone! I also submitted in the novel category this year but being my first year I was kinda confused about the format. For the outline I just wrote a continuous description of the storyline in paragraphs, so I did not separate/specify by chapter… do you think there is a set format that the judges wanted? I really want to know what others have done in the past so I can prepare for next year haha

I imagine they’ll just email your teachers. I won two national awards last year, and I’m pretty sure that’s how I found out.

But apparently it’s a little different for portfolio winners, since those awards are released to the media after the winners are notified, so there won’t be an official list of them anywhere for a while.

so im new here and i just found this thread but i won a gold medal (the national level one) last year for person essay- i could put that on college apps right?

Yeah, czubes, I would! :)

Also: results on Friday, y’all! Exciting stuff!

bahh i’m so nervous >.< are they going to email us? or will it be posted on the website? OR are we supposed to like log in someplace??! does aannnnyyone know??
