2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

I’m going to second YoungArts. You can earn anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000, and it’s the only way to get nominated for Presidential Scholar in the Arts (another great program).

Has anyone in MA heard anything yet? According to the Boston Globe sponsor section of the website winners are supposed to hear (or have heard) by Jan 20-22st.

@darkmagnolia: Are you sure? My friend won Silver Key last year for regional and she was notified in April. The regional celebration (for Southern California) was April too.

I’m totally going to go for youngARTS. I’m pretty interested in it. It seems just a bit more sophisticated than Scholastic Awards so it might be hard to get into. I have a question though. I’m entering the novel competition in Scholastic Awards can I use the same novel to enter youngARTS?

@Woahgosh: Maybe they changed it up this year? When I sign into my account on Scholastic and then look at regional guidelines, they give dates for the celebrations, and the first one is February 12 at UC Davis. I’m just guessing that they have to notify people pretty soon so that they can plan to go that weekend.

Oops, the link doesn’t take you to what I’m talking about because you have to sign in to see it.

RAL.
we’ve still got a long wait
first year entering, but I’m realllllly hoping to get to nationals.
Anyone entering in visual arts?

@ darkmagnolia: You’re right!!! Results are coming out soon!!! I’m so excited. :)

I wouldn’t say more sophisticated, exactly. From what I garned last week, they were looking for developed voices and a strong grasp of your form and technique. Scholastics, at least IMO, is looking for riskier, more experimental work.

Not a problem. (Margaret Nietfeld won youngARTS this year and a Scholastics Portfolio Gold last year with the same work.)

They sent out the results in my region…I didn’t win!! :'(

I’m sorry wesley!

Oh my god, I’m so relieved that the RAL results haven’t come out yet…
My friends from other states were talking about the awards/keys they won, and I was about to have a nervous breakdown.

Congrats to everyone who received them; good job for those who entered their work (it ain’t easy puttin’ your stuff out there knowing it’ll be judged, so kudos); and bonne chance a tout who are in the same disposition as me! : D

@glassesarechic Thanks so much for the info!

I competed in RAL Art Competition. And I’m not very optimistic that I’ll get a gold key. I though my work was pretty good but compared to some of the other art work I saw I feel intimidated.

I’m really upset/frustrated.

On the website in one place it said the fee was $5.00/submission.
But it turns out in another place that the fee is actually $10.00/submission if you submit after a certain date.

In short, I submitted 3 submissions and $15.00, when I really owed them $30.00. I’m hoping they maybe just chose one of the submissions to judge–since the $15.00 would cover the cost of one submission–but I have the feeling they might’ve thrown it out entirely. I would’ve paid the extra stupid $15.00 had I known!!! I tried to get in touch with them but it was impossible…

Oh well…

^I did the exact same thing. I just decided to delete the accounts I had online. I emailed them though and they said that I could have just sent the submission check later. So maybe you should try emailing them to see if you can still do that. I entered through RAL, btw.

I tried emailing them but they never answered. I think it’s too late now.
I’m not RAL… Our submission deadline was a good deal earlier than yours.

I just got my results  I’m thrilled

Has anyone from NC heard?

how do you know when your region comes out?

Well for my region they sent an email with an excel file list of the winners to the parents teachers and winners.
