Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

There are multiple reports of OOS acceptances in this thread.

@RaLaSrSa I gather you don’t like your own in-state institutions?

@rbc2018, not every state has a top 20 public university.

@TheVulcan Well yes, of course; by definition that is the case. Some states have lots of great public options, some less so. That’s why I was asking about your situation.

@Chekov Choosing tOSU is considered “giving up”? So what are the schools that you are looking for ahead of tOSU then? Just curious.

Well, I was being a bit facetious, obviously. A better way to phrase the same thought would be to simply state that we are not ready to commit yet.

OSU is a great school, and the highest-ranked school of the three that son has thus far been admitted to.

However, the other twelve schools he is applying to are all significantly more desirable (on a spectrum from Purdue and GT to MIT and Princeton), so we are, naturally, hoping for some more good news (even though chances are pretty slim at most of those places for a white male, even with his rare qualifications) before the time to make final decisions comes.

At the very least we would have loved for Purdue to accept him and offer a merit discount to make it about the same price as OSU. While OSU and Purdue are academic peers overall, Purdue’s CS program is better regarded than OSUs.

If, however, none of this materializes, OSU is a very solid option, so we are very happy it offered both merit and honors.

@TheVulcan I think you may be lacking in some self-awareness with these posts. Your son was admitted months ago. And Honors and merit. This board is for many of us who are still awaiting responses or whose first choice is tOSU. Your responses come off as condescending, which I am sure is not your intent. I am on another board on which you are posting as well. I think you would be better served in discussing things like this in a new thread or on the boards of the schools you feel are an obvious better choice. Just my 2 cents.

are admissions decisions coming out tonight? Some people are saying there is one but I am not sure. Thanks

I was going to joke that ‘you might even say there are only 20 states that can make that claim’ but in reality there are only 12! California, Michigan, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois , Texas, Ohio and Indiana

@smgins … what about UMass? Indiana though??

That’s exactly right, @smgins!

And while some states’ publics rival the best privates in the nation, in others the best public options do not break into the top 100 USNWR.

You forgot Maryland, especially if you include Penn and Indiana.

Nope - that’s #24, tied with MA and CT:)

Just called the admissions office and they said that admissions decisions will be released most likely every Friday between now and the end of January. So fingers crossed for tonight!

Good schools, ranked 24 and 31, respectively. But the comment was top 20. In reality, you need to find the right school for yourself irrespective of the ranking. If we wanted to go deeper you’d get Rutgers, Washington, UConn, Maryland and UMass in the top 25. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public

Not going to argue the point, just using US News & World Reports rankings. Of course, UMD is a great school (one of my D’s top choices) but just using an objective Top 20 ranking and they are 24.

Fingers crossed that we get decisions released tonight! It’s been a long wait since the last batch of decisions on November 22

did they say what time they will be releasing it tonight? fingers crossed

@smgins, actually, those USNWR rankings rely in part on such subjective metrics as “academic reputation, determined by a peer assessment”.

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/rankings-faq

Beyond that, the composition of the overall metric itself is basically a subjective committee decision. Malcolm Gladwell had a great piece on this topic in The New Yorker a while back:

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/02/14/the-order-of-things

“Who comes out on top, in any ranking system, is really about who is doing the ranking.”

But one can not personally inspect all of the thousands of colleges, and so the rankings become a self-fulfilling prophesy in a way. But of course, no one would seriously assert that the difference between a number 20 and a number 25 is terribly meaningful.

All that said, the fact remains that some states simply have no in-state matches for some students, rankings or no rankings.

I only chose the specific “top 20 publics” threshold to make a quick point:-)

There are a few top public universities in California, but none of them offers the major that my daughter is interested. And thus OSU is her top choice, waiting for tonight’s release!!!
